My local record shop does it rather strangely: David Bowie filed under 'D', Neil Young to be found under 'N' etc. Not that it matters much - as soon as I enter the shop my mind goes blank and I end up going through everything

Within each group, performers are filed alphabetically by family name and any "The" in the name is ignored.
Cataloguing of Classical music is further divided into size: concerto, sonata, symphony etc. alphabetically, and then under the name of the performers. If the work has been recorded more than once by a particular orchestra say, then it is further filed under conductor/leader and/or date of recording.
May all sound a bit 'anal' but it works for me.
