All fixed now. Yes, it was an extendable 'twist to lock' type. Been up there for ages, but fell down under the added weight of some hand washing put up to dry. The curtain rail was not designed for the extra weight.

Mind you, she did offer to repair it by banging in a couple of nails! Even if she had used masonry nails the tiles would have cracked and a right old mess made.
I thought about it and made a repair which will now take some extra weight, yet no longer depends on compressing the spring-loaded ends of the rail. And all the modifications are neatly hidden, so you can't see what I have done.

I'm intrigued - our pole has been known to succumb to gravity on occasion.

Next time I might just replace it with one of these:

props might be overkill steve ... i had also te shower shelf version. went vertically.. both lasted well enough tbh. im using cubbys that are suction fixed.. quite good they are and no screws into the fancy walling

I'm intrigued

All I did was to drill a hole in each end cap to take a 4mm screw head. Then drilled, rawlplugged and fitted the screws in the corresponding positions on the wall. Offered up one end of the rail to the first screw, extended the rail to cover the second screw, twisted the rail so it butted firmly against the wall and rehung the curtain.

So the rail will now take a little more weight, allowing some light clothes to be hung up to dry if need be. And the repair means the rail will not fall if it looses its torsional twist. The repair cannot be seen as the screws are covered by the end cups.

Works fine except in the winter of 2009/2010 it was so cold in the bathroom that the metal contracted sufficiently to cause the whole array to drop into the bath.

Made a hell of a racket.

Also my toothpaste was frozen solid in the tube.

It was -10C IIRC (That was indoors, it was even colder outside ofc)

That winter and the one after were the coldest I've known.

That's clever! Simple and ingenious at the same time And well explained too, even a donkey like me can understand that, and I'm rubbish with instructions.

Yes I've come across those, they look to work well, and you can position them to your ideal height for when showering.

We have no need for such things - when we have new bath fitted a few years ago it was positioned a few inches from the wall so I could run a shelf alongside it, then capped over with uPvc 'cappit' board sealed in. It's actually a lot better than it sounds, and easy to wipe clean.

Thanks! It didn't take too long to think of a solution, but it did take a good while to effect, as there was a lot of coming and going to find the right tools for the job.

I have a lot of tools; but since my partner moved in, she has 'tidied up' the place and now I can't find certain tools, and if I ask where they might be she doesn't know either!

Thanks! It didn't take too long to think of a solution, but it did take a good while to effect, as there was a lot of coming and going to find the right tools for the job.

I have a lot of tools; but since my partner moved in, she has 'tidied up' the place and now I can't find certain tools, and if I ask where they might be she doesn't know either!

If Happy's anything like Anita, the 'right place' for any particular tool is whatever box, drawer or cupboard it will fit into, so I've no chance

Fortunately I keep all of my work tools (and there are a lot) in my van, and there is a place for everything, everything in it's place. Folk think I keep the van pretty organised, but really it's just that if something doesn't go back to its usual place I've a devil of a job locating it!
