Everyone goes on about 'In the Court of the Crimson King', which is a classic, but so are then next 2 albums, this being 2nd and then 'Lizard'

You know Adrian, I'm ashamed to say King Crimson is one of those bands which completely passed me by in my youth. Where would be a good place for me to start? Looks like something I ought to get in vinyl, if only for the sleeve art

The 1st 3 albums starting with this, https://www.whatrecords.co.uk/items/...t-lp/95654.htm this is cheap as chips, note there are 3 recent re-releases of it, controlled by Robert Fripp, including a recent 50th anniversary, the re-releases are all good IMO, not worth considering buying 1st/2nd presses unless its your thing, or you happen to come across one cheap air in good condition.

Yeah, I know early presses are desirable from a collector's point of view, but I'm not precious about it, exceptions might be Stranglers' "Black & White" where first presses come with bonus 7" Walk on By (currently bidding on one), or "The Raven" (3D cover).

At the end of the day it is there to be played, and if the condition is dodgy I consider it money wasted, so... reissues is fine for me.

when I started secondary school in 1980 it was what the long-haired youths in the sixth form were listening to.

I've also never got round to it but I did have a listen to 'In The Court...' round a mate's house a few years back and thought it was pretty good and not as inaccessible as I'd feared.

They're in a different class from your usual prog band, I think they come from the same milieu as Eno.

I got a second press of their 1st lp on Island in near mint condition for £20 on ebay, lucky I guess. And a nr mint copy of their 2nd LP on the EG label - an 80s repress, but a lovely version of the LP, complete with nice thick sleeve, I much prefer these 80s represses to the more recent '180g' vinyl, which seem so cheaply made in comparison. The EG label did not press thick vinyl, but is that even a sign of quality? Their presses seem excellent quality to me.

Hmm, that raises a question, how thick does the vinyl need to be? I seem to remember reading something about 'dynaflex' in the 70's, which might have been due to an oil crisis - am I misremembering? I do recall some Bowie albums that were very thin.
