Bogey again in ... We're No Angels, 1955... bogart's 4th last film...




Jack Moffit of The Hollywood Reporter had a favorable review of the film, calling it "a glamorous comedy" full of performances which "are uniformly excellent" and a screenplay which "is worthy of study." Likewise, Lionel Collier of Picturegoer praised it as "a real breakaway comedy--ghoulish humor with a neat sardonic kick."

Hondo, 1953..




Michael Pate who plays the Indian chief was also in real life an expert in Old West Military procedure. He told later that the Indian attack in the movie was not realistic at all, because Indians were experts in guerrilla warfare and would never have been trapped in an arroyo by the U.S. Army.

The film was based on a story by Louis L'Amour which was first published in Collier's Magazine and adapted for the screen by James Edward Grant. It was later printed as a novel of which John Wayne said ' The best western novel I have ever read'. He added ' When I read Louis L'Amour's exciting novel, I knew I had to play Hondo Lane in a motion picture. In the man Hondo, I found the very spirit of the old West.'

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, 1979...series..




George Smiley has been retired for about a year when he finds a friend from the Circus, his old outfit in British Intelligence, sitting in his living room. He is taken to the home of an advisor to the Prime Minister on intelligence matters, where he finds evidence that one of the men in the senior ranks of his old agency is a Russian spy. Smiley is asked to find him, without official access to any of the files in the Circus or letting on that anyone is under suspicion. With only a few old friends, his own powers of deduction, and secrecy as weapons, Smiley must unearth the spy who turned him out of the Circus.

John le Carré was so impressed by Alec Guinness's performance as George Smiley that, in later novels, he wrote Smiley's characterization to be in keeping with Guinness' performance.

John le Carré has admitted that the vocabulary used in the novels/series (babysitters, lamplighters, the Circus, the nursery, moles, scalp hunters) was made up. He was later amused to discover that real agents had begun to appropriate some of his vocabulary once his espionage stories were published.

Although I enjoyed the later film made of TTSS, IMO the TV series was better and was more 'believable'.

Predestination, 2014... bluray...





The movie is based on Robert A. Heinlein's short story "All You Zombies".

The picture of the Crosby Shoes building in the beginning of the movie is actually a picture of the exploded reactor number 4 from Chernobyl Power Plant which exploded on 26 April 1986.

On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film had a score of 84% based on 111 reviews, with an average rating of 6.9 out of 10. The site's critical consensus stated: "Fun genre fare with uncommon intelligence, Predestination serves as a better-than-average sci-fi adventure—and offers a starmaking turn from Sarah Snook."

Smiley's People, 1982..





Sir Alec Guinness insisted on watching his scenes in the unedited rough cuts and would get depressed, thinking his performance was poor. Screenwriter John le Carré told Director Simon Langton not to worry about it because Guinness had done the same thing while filming Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (1979), and his performance then turned out fine.
