Very little vinyl released between 1992 and 2010 so copies of anything are few and far between, Value has rocketed unless they reissue. And because they are from a digital recording quality can be guaranteed the same.

they won't all necessarily be digital recordings but more than likely there will be a digital copy of the studio master even if they were recorded in analogue.

Some bands were still insisting on analogue recording way into the digital era - like 'Guns n Roses' for example.

Even so the originals from that era still seem to fetch a lot more than re-issues.

No not the wooly type.

I decided yesterday to evaluate a few speaker jumper cables I had lying around to see if I could hear a difference or not. Certainly any of the cable jumpers sounded better than the gold plated metal jumpers I had that came standard with the speakers.

So here are the cables I used.

From the left is a 5 inch length of Western Electric NOS 16GA which is tinned copper, then some heavy multi strand copper cable and the last terminated cable was some fairly ordinary twisted copper cable.

I am not going to make a meal of this quick review as we are only talking about 5 inches of jumper cable here so really what difference can they make? Well to my surprise they made a huge difference which was bonkers.

It is not really worth talking about the heavy multi strand cable or terminated cables as they just sounded dull and flat and squashed the dynamics but the Western electric 16GA was stunning by comparison.


The Western Electric 16GA had everything. Incredible detail, presence , soundstage, imaging, tonal quality, transparency and thrilling dynamic expansion. Bonkers considering its age. It looks like a piece of mains household wiring cable from a scrap heap but what a difference it makes to the sound. Considering all the electronics and all the equipment up stream of this cable it just seems crazy that this last 5 inches of cable can make any difference.

If you have speakers that use jumpers I strongly recommend trying the Western electric cable as jumpers as it is a fabulous bit of wire!

I am now going to try some interconnects which are also manufactured from tinned copper and compare them against a range of RCA ICs I have here and will post up my thoughts. Should be interesting.

It does seem so. Hard to believe that a small amount of cable can make such a difference.

I know a few people use Dueland tinned copper for both speaker cable and interconnects so I wonder how it compares to the WE. There's probably already a review online somewhere.

It is tin coated copper Grant and I think the copper they used back then was very high quality.

The Duelund 16guage tinned copper wire in cotton and oil rates very highly against the Western Electric.

Lovely sounding stuff,
Fiddly to make up, but great in that its recommended NOT to terminate it and run it bare wire.

Have a couple of lengths on mid and tweeter duties here, never think about speaker cable nowadays.
Cheap, easily available and very highly spoken of.

Found this article reviewing tinned copper cables. Some of his observations are very similar to my own. Must investigate further!
