you can; they are called supermarket shiteyou dont 'have' to but its advisable to help dissipate the co2 that comes out after roasting. fresh roasted can be used but its better to give them a few days. i usually do a week. you can see the build up in bag as it inflates a bit, even with a valve on bag. after a week or so they will steady up. still be super fresh too.
a kilo is about £30 or so delivered;; that does about 40+ coffees

Nope it was from the era when they were free. My stash of carrier bags dates back to the late 1990s.
Plus I get a free supply delivered by those 'charity' people who give you a bag to put old clothes in which they then never come back to collect. I don't get enough of those to cover my total use but it does slow down the depletion of my vintage stockpile.

since someone discovered about twenty years ago now that people will pay a fiver for a paper cup of not very good coffee I don't think there's been much pressure on them to deliver even more profits.

used the self service thing in the supermarket today.
Just no option, was in a hurry, only two tills open and both with long queues. Profiling of the queuing punters suggested that I'd be in for about a 20 minute wait regardless of which line I joined.
Self service and I was done in sixty seconds. I feel dirty but needs must.
