A Christmas Carol (1984)
George C Scott was a great Dickens schollar and wanted this to be "the definitive version of a beloved literary classic of his".. He suceeded too. it is a classic, along with the B&W 1951 version starring Alistair Sim, which may not have been quite so accurate but had the super Mr Sim in it.

The Four Feathers, 1939... Zoltan Korda's masterpice 'boys own' version of the 1902 novel
by A.E.W. Mason of same name.
All star cast too in this Criterion bluray remaster..
This version is widely considered the best of all the numerous film adaptations of the novel. Critic Michael Sragow praises the "film's gritty magic", calling it "next to Lawrence of Arabia (1962), the most harrowingly beautiful of all desert spectaculars." "They [the film crew] and the cast all do their jobs so well that the action becomes poetic."

Seven Days to Noon (1950).
classic British suspense movie this, alas only available from USA.
An English scientist runs away from a research center with an atomic bomb. In a letter sent to the British Prime Minister he threatens to blow up the center of London if the Government don't announce the end of any research in this field within a week.
James Bernard was most famous for composing the scores to numerous Hammer horrors, including Dracula (1958). Ironically, however, it was for this film that he won his only Oscar - as co-writer of the screenplay, not the music.
There are a number of literary references in Seven Days to Noon: Among the jottings on Professor Willingdon's notes -- "The wicked beareth rule" is from the Bible, Proverbs 29:2 (...when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn) and "Thus with a mighty fall shall Babylon the great city be cast down" Revelation 18:21; "Dark, dark, dark, amid the blaze of noon" comes from John Milton's Samson Agonistes, a play about the biblical character, Samson, who is granted the power to destroy the temple and kill all the Philistines (and himself). The professor later quotes Revelation 6:4, "The horse came forth, the red horse, and to him that sat thereon was given to take the peace from the earth. And there was given unto him a great sword." The speaker in Hyde Park says "There shall be wars and rumors of wars." Nearly identical words are found in Matthew 24:6, Mark 13:7 and the Book of Mormon, 2 Nephi 25:12. A man carries a sandwich board quoting "The wages of sin is death," again from the Bible, Romans 6:23.

Another classic with Alfred Hitchcock's ....The 39 Steps (1935). criterion bluray remaster...
The sixty-two imported sheep, upon arriving at the soundstage, immediately went to work on the bracken and bushes that had been brought with them. The infuriated crew had to replace the plants with ones hastily bought from a local nursery.
During a private screening, Alfred Hitchcock asked John Buchan, whose original plot had been used only very loosely, what he thought of the movie so far. Buchan replied: "Fascinating! I wonder how it will end."
Contemporary reviews were very positive. Andre Sennwald of The New York Times wrote: "If the work has any single rival as the most original, literate and entertaining melodrama of 1935, then it must be The Man Who Knew Too Much, which is also out of Mr. Hitchcock's workshop. A master of shock and suspense, of cold horror and slyly incongruous wit, he uses the camera the way a painter uses his brush, stylizing his story and giving it values which the scenarists could hardly have suspected."

Yes, it is of it's time, but a refreshing 'kick up the arse' of the Britsh film industry - similar to the advent of punk on the safe and self-satisfied British music scene.
Until then the British industry churned out entertaining, but safe films such as the Ealing comedies - the only exception being the work of Powell & Pressburger

I'm openingabottleofwine.
I saw it at my film club on the big screen many years ago, but I have had a DVD copy for a while now, and it was that which I watched last night.
It will have sub-titles which some don't like, but I prefer that to dubbing which to my ears always sounds odd and distracting.
