“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

It is impossible for anything digital to sound analogue, because it isn't analogue!

    Let me think:

1 pair of Mark Levinson ML-2 Class A monoblocks

1 pair of Quad 510 monobocks

1 pair of Quad 405s, which have been 'monoblocked' and upgraded to Keith Snook level 5, and with improved power supply components

    2 Quad 405-2 stereo amps

1 Quad 405-1 stereo amp, upgraded to -2

    1 Quad 520f stereo amp

1 Cambridge P50 integrated stereo amp

    1 Crown/Amcron D60 stereo power amp

(and an Amptastic Mini-T class D amp)

Lots of Quad gear, I owned a fair bit myself including the 405 then 405-2 finally ending up with a 606. Were the 510 mono blocks more for professional studio use?

Yes - they are an interesting design in having a balanced line transformer input and a transformer output, so by selecting the appropriate tapping, one can match the maximum ouput voltage to the speaker impedance. Furthermore, since the input and outputs are isolated, by using various series/parallel combination on the outputs, up to 8 units can be 'stacked' to source a maximimum of 1000W.

As other Members here will concur, I am a bit of a Quad 'fan': having 6 of their tuners as well as a couple of their preamps.
