Many long nights were spent filming the siege scenes. Loudspeakers were installed around the battlefield and fort so directions could easily be given to the hundreds of cast and crew. One night after many long hours, Mann shouted over the speakers, "What's that orange light? Turn out that orange light!" After a pause, another voice came over the speakers saying, "That's the SUN, Michael."

Daniel Day-Lewis is well known for going to extremes in preparation for his roles. For this film he lived in the wilderness where his character might have lived, hunting and fishing and living off the land for several months prior to shooting.

By most accounts, each scene took at least 20 takes. Concerned about the growing cost, 20th Century Fox sent a representative to the set who did nothing but stand behind Michael Mann and say, "That's enough Michael, move on." Which Mann ignored...

The main theme of the movie is taken from the tune "The Gael" by Scottish singer-songwriter Dougie MacLean on his 1990 album The Search.

The Hunt for Red October, 1990..

After the release of Tom Clancy's novel "The Hunt for Red October," some members of Congress contacted the CIA, demanding to know why the Russians had invented a caterpillar drive before the U.S. Navy did. Although a result of good research, the caterpillar drive is pure fiction.

While under attack from the other Russian submarine, Ramius asks Ryan which books he has written. Ryan describes one book about Admiral Halsey, to which Ramius replies "I know this book. Your conclusions were all wrong, Ryan. Halsey acted stupidly." No further explanation is given, but they are referring to the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October 1944. The U.S. was about to invade the Phillipines and knew the Japanese Navy would counterattack, but didn't know where. Halsey's fleet was supposed to guard the northern approaches to the invasion beaches. The Japanese Navy sent a small fleet of their ships in one direction as a decoy. Halsey took the bait and sent his entire fleet after it, but without informing the rest of the U.S. Navy of what he was up to, leaving the north completely unguarded. (This action is what Ramius refers to when he says "Halsey acted stupidly.") The rest of the Japanese Navy was able to slip through unscathed and undetected. If not for the valiant action of destroyers and escort carriers, the Japanese fleet could have devastated the U.S. invasion fleet.

a bit of fun is needed...

All star cast(if mostly old uns). Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Helen Mirren, Morgan Freeman, Mary-Louise Parker, Brian Cox etc etc...

Dame Helen Mirren had to learn how to shoot a gun without blinking so as to look more like an experienced killer. (Blinking was one of the main reasons why the stars in The Matrix trilogy wore sunglasses to mask their involuntary reactions.)
Karl Urban nicked Bruce Willis with the cup he throws at him in their fight scene, because he threw it faster than Willis expected. You can see the slight look of surprise on Willis' face in the scene.
In Bulgaria, this movie was distributed under the title "B.S.P." ("Besni Strashni Pensii", which means Furious Frightful Pensioners). But B.S.P. is also a mock title referring to the abbreviation of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (B.S.P.). Its political color is red, and its voters are mainly elder and retired people, just like the R.E.D.s.
