A disappointing film, that one. Mind you I am not much for Cohen brothers, except for Fargo and Lebowski.

i like it... its detatched we are detatched a bit like the boy, looking through doors, shadows etc.. cinematography is excellent as is acting. the snivelling evil coward son of Newman is brilliantly exposed as opposed to the stark bravery and do what has to be done by Hanks character; Newman was also spot on as the man with a blood son and a non blood son, and alas they are wrong way round.

Yes it has a lot going for it but I felt it was utimately a lot less than the sum of its parts. Don't think Hanks or Newman ever gave anything less than a great performance in anything, although Hanks has been in some right rubbish over the years.

..but this one is.... Miller's Crossing, 1990..

    Writers
Joel Coen and Ethan Coen suffered writer's block while writing Miller's Crossing (1990). They took a three week break and wrote Barton Fink (1991) a film about a writer with writer's block. The name of Tom Regan's residence is "The Barton Arms". In one of the newspapers an article reads 'Seven Dead in Hotel Fire,' another reference to Barton Fink.

Although he was a native Irishman playing a lieutenant to an Irish mobster, the Coens did not originally want Gabriel Byrne to use his own accent in the film. Byrne argued that his dialogue was structured in such a way that it was a good fit for his accent, and after he tried it, the Coens agreed. Ultimately, both Byrne and Albert Finney used Irish accents in the film.

In a 2015 interview Jon Polito revealed that, during the production, a distressed Marcia Gay Harden, in her first major role, complained to him that she felt co-star Gabriel Byrne was acting cold and distant towards her. Polito believed Byrne was doing this to remain in-character, for the sake of their performances.

This has a lot of great cinematography too, and a good splash of Hammett t'boot. Some very good performances too.
Gabriel Byrne said after working on Defense of the Realm..

Never work with kids, animals or Denholm Elliott, due to being upstaged so well and so often..lol.

The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, 1974...

The reason for the large gap between the subway cars and the platform is that a large portion of the underground scenes was filmed on the unused Court St. stub of the IND subway, which uses wider cars than the IRT cars used in the film.

One of Robert Shaw's favorite pastimes during breaks in filming was playing ping-pong on tables set up on the station's concourse. He reportedly badly beat all challengers.

Since the film's release, no #6 train has ever been scheduled to leave Pelham Bay Park Station at either 13:23 or 01:23 by the New York City Transit Authority. This was the practice for many years until the policy was discontinued. Trains are still not scheduled to leave the Pelham Bay Park Station at either 1.23 am or pm.

    The Sweeny - 'Night Out.'

Regan buys an unopened bottle of scotch from behind the bar in a pub. Landlord asks him for three pounds thirty-one.

well, it is 1975. Almost fifty years ago, which is hard to take on board. I remember watching these when they were new.

thats about right for a standard whisky then in a shop, and most were standard. in a pub you usually paid a lot more tho... the single malt takeoff hadnt really got into full swing, although there were still some like glenlivet, glenmorangie etc who did sell them to the more well heeled, and did since the 19th c.
