Great Expectations, 1946...bluray.
Charles Dickens wrote a much harsher ending to the novel for its original publication in which Pip and Estella remain apart. He was forced to substitute the more famous ending when it later was published as a book, because the first one upset his readers. This appears to be the only time he ever changed the ending to one of his novels.

A remarkable film, which was a revelation to me in the depiction of the 'wild' west, and of the ruthless greed, and cruelty displayed by some of the settlers. I don't think I could watch it again - it's too revealing.

New to me, so I did watch it on Talking Pictures TV. Thanks for the 'heads up' Geoff.Tonight on Talking Pictures TV at 9.30, 'The Chase' 1965. With Marlon Brando, Robert Redford, Jane Fonda, Robert Duvall, Angie Dickinson, James Fox, Richard Bradford, and Martha Hyer. An impressive but not well known thriller with a superb cast!
Think the film might have been given a bit of spit 'n' polish, as it was pin sharp and the colours looked refreshed.
As a 'commentary' on '60s Texas USA, it didn't pull it punches, and was at times a difficult watch. But I'm glad I did.
Unfortunately I found the ending a bit of a cop out. Apparently the director Athur Penn virually disowned the film after it was re-edited: maybe it was through re-editing that the ending suffered.
Anyway, it was interesting to see how some of the actors looked back in 1966.
