pretty taut stuff. A fter a few films that didn't show the us services in a good light this wasn't given much aid from america thus the use of british boats etc.
it was a pretty good apocalyptic holocaust type of film popular at time..

The House on 92nd Street, 1945.



The movie deals with the theft by German spies of the fictional "Process 97", a secret formula which, the narrator tells us, "was crucial to the development of the atomic bomb." The movie was released on September 10, 1945, only a month after the atomic bombs had been dropped on Japan, and barely a week after Japan's formal surrender. While making the film, the actors and Director Henry Hathaway did not know that the atomic bomb existed, nor that it would be incorporated as a story element in the movie. (None of the actors in the film mentioned the atomic bomb.) However, co-Director and Producer Louis De Rochemont (who produced the "March of Time" newsreel films) and Narrator Reed Hadley were involved in producing government films on the development of the atomic bomb. (Hadley was present at the final test of the bomb in Los Alamos, New Mexico, in July, 1945.) After the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, Hadley and Screenwriter John Monks, Jr. hastily wrote some additional voice-over narration linking "Process 97" to the atomic bomb, and Rochemont inserted it into the picture in time for the film's quick release.

Nuns on the Run, 1990..




One of two comedies where the two male lead characters impersonate members of the clergy which launched within three months of each other in the USA during 1989-1990. The movies are We're No Angels (1989) which debuted December 1989 in the USA where Robert De Niro and Sean Penn pretended to be priests and Nuns on the Run (1990) which opened stateside March 1990 where Eric Idle and Robbie Coltrane hid-out dressed up as nuns.

Brian is from London and Charlie is from Liverpool. In the Japanese subtitled version, Brian's dialogue is subtitled in Tokyo dialect and Charlie's in Osaka dialect.

Callan, 1974.. another of my favs this... loved the series too




Credited as technical advisor for war games models, respected figure designer Peter Gilder supplied Schneider's American Civil War diorama, built by himself. In 1978 he was reunited with Woodward as a combatant in editions of Battleground (1978), a six-part war gaming series made by Tyne Tees Television which it is thought reused some of the figures and terrain from this film (certainly the Battle of Gettysburg featured in one edition).

The film was adapted from series creator James Mitchell's 1969 novel "Red File for Callan" (aka "A Magnum for Schneider" and "Callan", the latter title being the reprinted tie-in to this film), an expansion of his 1967 teleplay Armchair Theatre: A Magnum for Schneider (1967). Events such as the training sequences, Range Rover road scare and "the Greek"'s subplot did not feature in the original drama.

Callan's Wormwood Scrubs mugshot in his file gives his penal number as 49175228. The records also note his father was James Edward Callan (presumably named after series creator James Mitchell and the actor who played him, Edward Woodward), his mother Mary Elisabeth Callan.

Not a bad film - but the poster is misleading: I don't remember any bikini-clad blond appearing in the film, nor any scenes involving helicopters.

got a magazine from 1978 which has an article about the 'Battleground' series. It confirms the same diorama was used as us shown in the film.

Never seen 'Battleground', I don't think it was actually shown in the Granada region and I don't think it's ever been repeated. Have to check Youtube see if it is on there.

If they brought the series back they would have to use an energy-saving LED bulb for the title sequence, which wouldn't be as dramatic. Is this the show that had the scruffy little sometime helper called Lonely? I remember it being a big hit with my mum.

Up Pompeii, 1971..



In the screenplay, the last scene featured Lurcio (Frankie Howerd) walking off into the cloud of ash created by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, accepting his imminent death. The epilogue featuring the museum curator also played by Howerd, was added by Director Bob Kellett, who thought that the scripted ending was too downbeat, and wanted to imply that Lurcio may have survived and even had children.

The bath set, prominently featuring a bust of John Gielgud, was originally created for Julius Caesar (1970), in which Gielgud played the title character.
