It is a piece of piss. I get pancake duties every year, can never remember how, so just make it up as I go along. Always works out ok. I accept waffle making will be messy, but cleaning up afterwards is also a piece of piss, she tells me

I'll resist the temptation to comment on Scottish banknotes. No I won't, I'll say this: One of my Scottish mates takes umbrage at shops down here that don't want Scottish notes ("I think you'll find they're legal tender!") Doesn't accept that English folks' not being familiar enough with them makes it easier to be fooled by forgeries.

When I was a youngster I used to like returning from me hols with Scottish notes, it made me feel like an international jet setter. Like bringing home a straw donkey from Benidorm. But these days it's just a pain.

Off up to Ayr on Friday for the weekend, and we'll be rid of any paper money before we return, spend it on white pudding and Lorne sausage

Legal tender has a narrow technical meaning which has no use in everyday life. Scottish bank notes are not legal tender anywhere actually in the narrow scope of the phrase, 'legal tender'

But I suppose they are 'legal' in that you're ok to use them in a purchase, provided that the seller is happy to sell. But that would apply with any currency.

well they are not illegal. as with any currency or form of purchase method, its up to the seller as to what he accepts. if he only takes cigarette cards then that is the shops' privellage.

legal tender only means that if you offer to fully pay off a debt to someone in legal tender, they can’t sue you for failing to repay.
What’s classed as legal tender varies throughout the UK. In England and Wales, it’s Royal Mint coins and Bank of England notes. In Scotland and Northern Ireland it’s only Royal Mint coins and not banknotes.

There are also some restrictions when using small coins. For example, 1p and 2p coins only count as legal tender for any amount up to 20p.
Many common and safe payment methods such as cheques, debit cards and contactless aren’t legal tender. But again, it makes no difference in everyday life. In reality tho all UK notes are fully accepted by your bank so you wont be stuck with them.

The DVLA recently reminded me I have reached the age where I have to renew my driving licence.

They sent me a rather complicated form which was not exactly clear how much of it should be filled - but also said I could do it on-line. Now I have had in the past poor experience in doing things on-line: you fill it all out, press 'submit', only to find out you have missed something, or it just goes back to the beginning; a bit like 'Groundhog Day'.

But having nothing to loose, I gave it a go. And to my great surprise my new photo driving licence arrived today, less than a week after application. And it didn't cost me anything (well apart from the cost of a stamp, as I have to return my old licence).

It probably helped that I was able to quote my passport number, so they had a photo and signature on file.

I renewed mine last year and it was an almighty pain to sort, took four months!
