During the filming of Beat the Devil, Humphrey Bogart lost several of his teeth in a car accident. Peter Sellers, then not known internationally but with a talent for imitating voices, was hired to dub some of Bogart's lines while Bogart was adjusting to the loss of his teeth and unable to speak clearly.

Claud Cockburn wrote the screenplay based on his novel. Truman Capote was purportedly brought in to complete the script, late in the process, when Cockburn left or was fired.

Humphrey Bogart described Gina Lollobrigida as "the most woman I've seen for a long time--makes Marilyn Monroe look like Shirley Temple."

great scrips and real actors. thats really all you need. don't have much of that now tho, plus cinema goers now seem to meed a light show every couple of minutes to hold their attention.

Yes, they make what is proven to deliver a profit, or at least they try to. I think that's always been the case.

years ago when I shared a house with three work colleagues I was watching telly with one of them and 'The Maltese Falcon' was due on. I said to him 'You have to watch this, it's one of the best films ever made.' It starts and he says 'Oh, black and white, I'm not interested in this.' And he got up and left. That's your modern punter.

In the 1960s studios concentrated on big production action films trying to offer something that television couldn't since TV was really hitting their profits. But it was hit and miss, and if they had a miss they lost money big time since the production was so expensive.

Then 'Easy Rider' was a huge hit despite costing pennies to make, so the studios started looking for similar scripts that would be cheap to make but would appeal to mass audiences. We got a lot of good films out of that period in the early 1970s.

Then along came 'Jaws' and 'Star Wars' and changed everything. If you made a big spectacle film with the right ingredients and promoted it well you could not only make a fortune but get a whole franchise out of it. So they lost interest in making low-key character-driven films.

yeah its amazing the rubbish the studios will invest a small fortune in, yet ignore great scripts. the public needs to be shown what i want them to see lol
the one im watching with bogey is pretty poor but its better than most modern stuff

While filming the white water canoeing scene, Ned Beatty was thrown overboard and was sucked under by a whirlpool. A production assistant dove in to save him, but he didn't surface for thirty seconds. John Boorman asked Beatty, "How did you feel?", and Beatty responded, "I thought I was going to drown, and the first thought was, how will John finish the film without me? And my second thought was, I bet the bastard will find a way!"

Burt Reynolds broke his coccyx (tailbone) while going down the rapids when the canoe capsized. Originally, a cloth dummy was used, but it looked too fake, like a dummy going over a waterfall. While Reynolds recovered, he asked, "How did it look?" Director John Boorman replied, "Like a dummy going over a waterfall."

I did run through his filmography before I posted that just in case there was one I'd forgotten.

Nope.

I don't mind some of his redneck films, 'Cannonball Run' and that, as long as I'm at least half drunk and not looking to be challenged. But they are complete trash.
