Regimental Sergeant Major Lauderdale (Sir Richard Attenborough) demands that a royal portrait of the Queen of England was hung behind the bar of the mess.

The personal weapon used by the British is the Sterling sub machine gun which replaced the Sten in the British Army in 1953. This weapon is held with the left hand on the barrel and never the magazine or housing. Holding the magazine is a throwback to its predecessor, the Sten. The experienced senior members of the Mess are holding it incorrectly whilst the most inexperienced among them (Private Wilkes) holds it correctly and naturally.
and, At regimental dinners in the Sgts Mess, the Loyal Toast is always proposed by Mr Vice, the junior member of the mess, and not by the RSM.

yeah a sten should be held by the shroud, unless your firing from hip at close range. the mag was pretty strong so it wouldnt damage it if careful. not advised for regular tho or it'll jam eventually

I'm told they often jam if you try firing them on full automatic, didn't try that though as the ammo is too expensive!

sten was a shitty stick quite frankly.. every other army had better, the thompson(tommygun)was very good, but like sten you shoot just a short 3 4 bullet blast at time or it became inaccurate. The Ruskie papasha was probably the best and cheapest. The Owen from Australia was most reliable even covered in shite it worked everytime. it was even cheaper lol

My dad used one in WW2. He said they could fire a burst if banged or dropped. Not sure if that was right.

yup they could indeed and did regularly lol. They could empty themselves and move around as it happened spraying you and yours with bullets...It was quite dangerous weapon for wrong reasons at times.
