The majority of water wheels are big, cumbersome and slow moving so dont really generate electricity well. Its not to say you couldnt do it tho. You just have to design a different one and put it in a place where it will spin quickly enough.

I wouldn't have thought big and cumbersome would be a problem - as long as the wheel has some welly, the final drive can be quick as you like if it's geared down that way.

And the latest I've heard is that price of loft insulation is set to increase by about 55%. Just as folk will be looking at ways to cut down their energy usage. Boils my piss that does.

they will work and produce electric etc but they are not efficient. modern hydro is really a modern version which is fairly efficient. ideally you want the whell turning fairly even and relatively fast. not like a waterwheel which is better at producing a decent bit of muscle.

Ok I accept that a water wheel is probably not ideal, but living next to a stream can still save us some money - all I would need is a rock in the stream to beat the clothes on, and another rock next to it for Mrs. P to sit on

My grandmother did that. The locals had a pond and stream fed by a spring and washed their laundry there. It was in a tiny hamlet east of central France.

Wind turbines are slow moving, but they generate electricity. There is no real reason why water wheels cannot be used to generate electricity for domestic use, as long as there is not a need for a lot of power (say < 20kW): https://www.askaprepper.com/homemade...ric-generator/,
