E10 petrol based fuel will be introduced in September and about a million cars in the UK are anticipated to be unsuitable to use it in. The current E5 petrol/alcohol blend will continue to be available for now, but it may be worth looking into if you have an older vehicle.

There's a list of incompatible cars here: https://www.thesun.co.uk/money/15971...l-fuel-switch/

This list may not be comprehensive.

Hmmm, seems the government hasn't heard of Marcos!

As an aside, the only big headache I'll be having with E10 is that the lawn mower can't use it. However, I wonder if I'll get the lawn done faster running it on Super Unleaded?

E10 will not be compatible with some garden power tools. Engines with carburettors will have incorrect air/fuel mixtures. Two strokes will suffer wear. Available lead substitutes for much older engines may no longer be as effective.

In theory, all the above can potentially be sorted, but is it worth it?

Is this a bit like when they did away with four star? Perhaps changes to mixture and/or timing is required? I used to run my old Golf GTI on four star but flogged it before the changes, so never had to do anything.

More Ethanol also means poorer economy. The incompatibility is mainly the fuel lines, so it is potentially dangerous.
Here in France we have been using E10 for a while now. When I heard it was coming in, I changed the flexible fuel lines on my Caterham, but not everybody is aware of the need, or is capable of doing it.

The problem appears to be significant. It is believed that the higher bioethanol content in E10 petrol could dislodge deposits in older engines and fuel systems, causing blockages; it could also cause some seals, gaskets, metals and plastics to corrode.

    taken from whatcar..

e5 will be available i think in form of higher grade unleaded, but at a price.

I remembered to look yesterday when filling up. and my local Sainsbury's are also doing E10 petrol. Must be what it is, they wouldn't be allowed to label it incorrectly, even temporarily. The label also advises checking your vehicle's suitability.

Probably best I avoid using it, especially as my van is diesel

I love Hendrix for so many reasons. He was so much more than just a blues guitarist - he played damn well any kind of guitar he wanted. In fact I'm not sure if he even played the guitar - he played music. - Stevie Ray Vaughan
