In response to the strange opening hours query, it is indeed a 'passion' around a full time job; though saying that we (my wife and I) do take it seriously. We really want to create a quality record shop with exceptional customer service that is there for the local community. We offer free local delivery and from 11/09 will be putting local bands on in the shop to give them some extra exposure (and obviously introduce their fans to the shop!). It is very early days (less than 6 months old) but we have big plans!

Great choice on the Wave Pictures by the way!

I reckon Macca's musical tastes are wider than you give him credit for. In the short time I spent scrounging his RCM we had The The, Primal Scream, some jazz trio or quartet whose name escapes me, and ok a bit of the Dan

I only have about 600 CDs and about 400 vinyl albums, but I know that's enough music to see me out. It could be a bigger collection of albums, but then most of them would never see the light of day, and there's so many other things need buying, which may or may not also be vinyl

Stuff I don't listen to - Classical, Techno/hard core dance, Folk, C&W (although I don't mind it when the Stones or Neil Young or someone gets a bit country) and 'World Music'.

Otherwise I give anything a try. I maybe have 1000 albums but I only buy records I think I'll listen to multiple times. I'm not a collector and don't want to be.

Pretty much the same as me, except for the Folk bit - I do have a Simon & Garfunkel record Oh and a Johnny Cash CD, so that's Country sorted.

No problem, Steve. They're very well deserved, as you've got a great little shop there, and with your love of music, you clearly have a passion to make it work. Especially by focussing on exceptional customer service, which is so important for any small (and especially niche) business to survive. I'm sure you'll do well.

Oh I know he's got a wide taste in music; that's not in dispute. I just tend to be less of a creature of habit and more experimental with new stuff. I'd get bored listening to the same music I've always listened to for the last 20/30 years, or whatever, and I enjoy stepping out of my comfort zone

For me it's not a case of having enough music to 'see you out' (as if that were the case, like you, I'd have stopped buying it long ago), but keeping things fresh and interesting. I get a buzz out of finding a new band or artist I hadn't heard of before and collecting their output, and/or going to see them perform live, much more so these days than buying new equipment.

It's just where my head's at now, and therefore where I derive most pleasure!

Lol - I love all those genres, especially folk! Don't you even like a bit of John Martyn, Dylan or Joni Mitchell?

I'm with you on Country & Western though, aside from Johnny Cash, who's superb. 'World Music' is rather diverse, but off the top of my head I'm a big fan of the likes of Ali Farka Touré, Ravi Shankar and Nitin Sawhney.

What about electronic/ambient? For me, especially these days, that's a rather diverse and interesting genre.

Classical music is an interesting one... I wasn't really into it at all until around 15 years ago, and then started to get really into it, especially the best recordings and performances from the 'golden era' (IMO, mid 50s to late 70s), on the best labels. I particularly love Shostakovich and Wagner, and now have 1200 classical albums on vinyl and around 200 classical CDs, not to mention around 3TB of classical music on hard drives!

Sure, I get that. When it comes to vinyl, I'm also a bit of a collector, so have quite a few rare/collectable albums, in VG/mint condition (of various genres), which are worth decent money now. However, I acquired them, first and foremost, because I liked the music!

Dylan and Mitchell, are they really folk music? I suppose early Dylan is but even then it's American Folk. Actually I've only got one Dylan album, Blonde on Blonde.

Not into John Martyn although I think I have Solid Air somewhere. Only got a bit of ambient/electronic, find it a bit boring, wallpaper music. Classical I tried but I can't get into it.

Got some valuable vinyl but only because I was still buying new releases on vinyl well into the 1990s and they have become rare now as not many were pressed. I'll be selling that at some point.

A lot of my listening is to the same music I was into in my teens and twenties. Not making any excuses for that, it's about quality over quantity and 95% of modern (post 2000) popular music is either shite or derivative.

Main area I explore new (to me) stuff is Jazz now.
