Yup, I completely agree on all of that. I started primary school though in 1971, and enjoyed many of the things you describe. I loved all of my schooldays, right up until I left secondary school in 1982 (having completed a 6th year).I was five (so everything seemed bigger), but there were very deep snow drifts (Hertfordshire) which lasted for weeks.
I seem to remember 1965/66 (most of my primary years seemed to have decent snow) being really good for snowball fights. Sledging on nearby Royston/Therfield heath The heath had good hills and a golf course, I remember going down one hill and disappearing in a drift in a bunker. Exhilarating times and brilliant memories.
I had a lot more freedom as a kid than I allowed my children. Out and about with local kids from about the age of six, just wouldn't be allowed now.
However, I think some kids are mollycoddled too much now by their parents, who insist on walking them to school, even if they live 500 yards away!
The fact is, there were just as many paedos around in 'our' day, as there are now; just not as widely publicised, so we were in just as much potential danger, but just got on with it as part of life. You can't wrap kids up in cotton wool 24/7!

Quite so - there was a report of a "flasher" in the local common when I was still at primary, so a gang of us (ages about eight to ten) went out to hunt him with home made bows and arrows (we all had sheaf knives as well)Yup, I completely agree on all of that. Didn't find him, so we ended up damming up a brook, then destroying the dam with rocks once it had built up a decent amount of water behind it.
