Love me Or Leave Me, 1955. the life story of Ruth Etting, and stars Doris Day as Etting, James Cagney as gangster Martin "Moe the Gimp" Snyder, her first husband and manager, and Cameron Mitchell as pianist/arranger Johnny Alderman, her second husband. It was written by Daniel Fuchs and Isobel Lennart and directed by Charles Vidor.





The role of Snyder was originally intended for Spencer Tracy, but he turned down the project. Cagney suggested to producer Joe Pasternak casting Doris Day in the Etting role. The role had been sought by Ava Gardner and Jane Russell.

It was nominated for 6 Oscars and wone one for 'Best Motion Picture Story'

Another 60th anniversary edition, Hobson's Choice, 1954. Directed by the great David Lean and stars John Mills, Charles Laughton, Brenda DeBanzie and Prunela Scales.





This was the most popular film of its year and was John Mills favorite of all his films.

Another remaster of a classic tale; Film of E Nesbit's novel, The Railway Children, 1970. Directed by Lionel Jefferies and stars Dinah Sheriden, Jenny Agutter, Sally Thomsett, Iain Cuthbertson, William Mervin and Bernard Cribbins.







Lionel Jeffries used the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway, and its station at Oakworth, as the backdrop for the film, referring to it as the "Great Northern and Southern Railway".

At the time of filming, there were still very few heritage railways in Britain and only the KWVR could provide a tunnel, which is important in a number of scenes. The tunnel is a lot shorter in reality than it appears in the film, for which a temporary extension to the tunnel was made using canvas covers.

The film was and still is a critical mastepiece and was Jeffries debut as a director.

Interestingly Sally Thomsett was older that Agutter but had to pretent to be younger, even on set, so wasnt allowed to smoke lol

It's a very good movie. I did jury service thirty years ago - and the film went through my mind at the time.

Everyone remembers Henry Fonda, but I think Lee J. Cobb's rôle was equally commendable, playing the part of the bigoted jurer.

its the more modern version and is used in schools a lot, but the sim one is just so perfect i cant see it not being a masterpiece for ever

also stars Charlotte Rampling, John Ireland, Jack O'Halloran, Sylvia Miles and Harry Dean Stanton, with an early screen appearance by Sylvester Stallone.







Mitchum(who was the only actor to play Marlowe twice on the big screen) says Charlotte Rampling "arrived with an odd entourage, two husbands or something. Or they were friends and she married one of them and he grew a mustache and butched up. She kept exercising her mouth like she was trying to swallow her ear. I played her on the right side because she had two great big blackheads on her left ear, and I was afraid they'd spring out and lodge on my lip."[8]

Mitchum later admitted, "This kid Richards, the director, he's got something. It'll be a good picture."
