How can I have "a big gap in my listening years" when I have already said I detest most of the artist/groups you list? If I hadn't listened to them, then I wouldn't be able to say if I detested them or not.

I've been listening to, and collecting music for the last sixty years, so there is not much I have missed.

I think you have forgotten those below, included because they all entered into the glam rock spirit at some point, flamboyant, cross-dressing, fantasy lyrics no-one understood, catchy riff driven songs etc.

As you may notice there are some very well known and influential artists who rode the glam rock wave, saw their way through the 2 years of punk backlash, which was effectively engineered anti-pop and went up its own rear end. They then saw the emergence of early goth and new-wave both harping back to glam influences but more edgy in some cases, by the end of the 80’s, the pop scene was loosing its way and became tedious with artists trying to find the new thing.

So whether you liked the glam era or not it did spawn some Very successful artists some of which are still with us today.

It doesn’t really matter if you like glam rock or not, the three you mention were all rather successful and entered into the glam rock spirit at the time and carried on working for quite some time, their popularity and others surely means they must have some merit.

William Shakespeare I vaguely recall being from Aus, and having a glam rock single.

In the 80s I saw The Sweet live, and though i didn't mind their singles offerings in the 70s, they weren't the sort of band that made it into my collection. So I wasn't expecting much from their live gig. I was wrong. Sure, they played some of 'the hits', but also a lot of worthy rock material, and played it well.

I've no doubt plenty of perfectly good bands of the 70s jumped on the Glam Rock bandwagon just to get noticed, but their albums and concerts better revealed their true colours.

I never saw the point in 'Glam-Rock'. It was just another crass money making thing and had no real credibility. It was aimed at twelve year olds and treated with ridicule by proper Rock fans (in my opinion).

Funny you say it has no “real credibility” however it’s interesting that songs by Slade, Sweet, T. Rex, Bowie, Mud, and various other artists that fitted the glam rock mould are still played on various radio stations.

However, sadly IMO, “proper rock”, if there is such a thing rarely gets played. I cannot remember the last time I heard an old tune from Deep Purple, Atomic Rooster, Rainbow, Blue Oyster Cult, Groundhogs, or similar on the regular air waves, but then they were never considered main stream, successful or not. Occasionally a Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones or Led Zep number is played but that’s about it.
