Yes, different cultures no doubt. The Sopranos is an interesting example to bring up, clearly by any metric they were a totally dysfunctional family in constant conflict but they still fundamentally cared about each other. That's a shame, mind you my Dad was very distant and always tried to 'busy' himself during his time off from work. By the time I was 13 he was just a voice on a phone call from working away. I don't talk to him nowadays, haven't seen him for years.
With my kids (Jude, 9 and Hannah, 4) I'm always cuddling them, teaching them things, giving them praise always, listening to them, sitting and chatting with them, playing with them whatever they want to do, and if things go wrong I always assure them that I will get it sorted and then getting it sorted becomes my top priority.
Never do they feel that they have to hide anything from me, good or bad. They're also reassured knowing that they can ask me anything at any time.

No, it really isn't.
Partly it was a different generation, adults did their thing and the children did theirs. Nowadays it would probably be classed by some as 'abuse' or 'neglect' but it really wasn't. We just didn't need that sort of constant emotional reassurance. We didn't want it either!
