Our local council have pissed me off as they are now charging for garden waste removal from next February. We’ve always had two garden bags but now we have the options of a smaller bin for £39 per year or a bigger bin for £59. Alternatively we can keep using the bags but still have to pay £39!

However given that. If I do our lawns and hedges all in one go, I fill both garden bags and two to three of those white bags that builders deliver shingle/topsoil in by the ton, so I make regular entries to the dump anyway. Consequently I’m not paying extra - they can sod off!

Tell me about it, mate... We pay £25 per green bin (we have two) per year, ON TOP of the contribution for refuse collection from our council tax (£1800 a year), and which can get filled to the brim (including jumping on top of the waste to compress it down) within an hour of cutting grass or clearing leaves!

After that, it's a case of filling sacks and taking it to the local recycling depot. Hey, I guess it's the 'bane' of having a substantial piece of land...

Anyway, back to Xmas decs, Del's just finished the garland for over the fire, all made from recycled materials. Think it looks cosy and Christmassy:

No specific rules banning burning here, just that a nuisance mustn't be caused.

Are you sure? Councils don't like you burning stuff but as far as I am aware there is no specific law against it.

You could create a compost heap, that would take care of grass cuttings and other organic stuff

Not permitted here mate, simply because the fumes can go into someone else's property and cause them distress. I certainly wouldn't want to live next door to someone burning stuff and inhale all the fumes, or them coming in and stinking out the house!

If someone reports any such fires/burning of refuse here, the fire brigade come round and put it out.

We already do that mate, and have a large composter at the back of the garden, mainly to turn dead leaves into leaf mould for compost (as you know Del's big into recycling), but there's simply too much of the stuff.

It's very impressive.

You can deny the fire brigade access to your property - they may well come round and put out people's bonfires but I doubt very much they are acting within the law.
