I've got two of each.....

They were the best looking by a million miles and accurate to 1/100th of a gramme, apparently. Bit fiddly to use and two of them are coming unstuck as I recall. Must drag them out for a fiddle sometime.

I also have some of their squirrel hair record and stylus brushes somewhere. Beautiful but useless.

Well, Andre, let me educate you then good sir! As an ex-Goodmans employee who had access to their archive I can tell you that the early 70's range went something like this -

Maxim - Two way with 4" bass
Double Maxim - as above but twin 4" bass drivers
Minster - Two way; 8" bass driver
Havant - Three way; 8" bass driver
Mezzo - Three way; 10" bass driver
Magnum - Three way; 12" bass driver
Magister - Three way; 15" bass driver

At the same time the range had a few oddities like the Goodwoods, which were also three ways with a 12" bass driver and the Dimension 8s which had a 10" rear-mounted passive radiator and four 5" bass drivers in a bidirectional arrangement.

The Goodmans ranges were horrendously confusing, with the 'M' range listed above, the RB series, the dB series, two different ranges of Achromats and the High Impact Monitor range, to name but a few! They also had an irritating penchant for re-using names -I know of four different versions of 'Maxim' that spanned the 1960s to the 1990s.

A lot of people dismiss Goodmans loudspeakers quite readily because of their relative low cost when they were new and the fact that you really can pick them up for plennies nowadays. The only real collectables are some of the rarer drive units like the Axiom 80s and the original 1960s Maxims. I think this is a shame, personally - they came up with some simple but very capable designs over the years and it is always worth remembering that many of the great UK loudspeaker designers started their careers at Goodmans. I personally think the final closure of the company in 2006 was a very sad day for the British audio industry.

I've had a look and it's a Mitchell. Apart from the place where the stylus is placed (improved on the Mitchell from a safety point of view, if not from a user point of view), they look identical.

Maximum error (for a tracking force of 1.5g weight): 8.3mg, or +0.55%. Good enough for me.

These days I use an electronic jeweller's balance as it's more convenient and just as accurate. Sometimes I use a Swiss 'Correx' gauge.

Hi Fi obsessed Snobs might turn their noses up at this 20 Bit machine but it was a very expensive CDP in the late 80's about £450 ish..

I just picked up a five shelf Stands Unique rack for £17. Collected it this morning.

Quite chuffed with that .

EDIT: But not so chuffed that I've managed to put this in the wrong bloody forum - sorry.

Still a bargain though....
