Well having spent a little time in Nepal and whilst there was inspired by the people and their views on life.

My understanding is it is considered to be the embodiment of Buddhist beliefs, or its most condensed form. I believe it also refers to the Lotus which is central and the jewel, or relationship between male and female in all things.

Your comment on the relation between, and indispensability of, the male and female is also true. You might have seen tantric sculptures shown iwith a male character (often displayed in demonic form) in yab yum ("father mother") position with his female counterpart (or shakti).



He represents compassion, she insight or wisdom, and the union between the two leads to enlightenment. United, the figures symbolize the union necessary to overcome the false duality of object and subject.
