Lol - it shows! He could've brought round a nice bottle of wine then instead... Must've thought you wouldn't have been cultured enough to appreciate it?

For me, pretty much all lager [not BEER though, I *must* make that distinction, as that's a different animal] made in the UK tastes like pishwater... Lager, or more correctly, Pils, is a foreign thing. We simply don't do it well, in the way that we can produce some truly outstanding, world-class real ales (beer), so I wouldn't touch any of the former with a bargepole.

I guess, as ever, it boils down to whether you drink lager (Pils) to savour and enjoy it, in moderation, and therefore appreciate it when it's done well, or simply neck it to get pished, in which case quantity (and price) will always outweigh quality.

One of my pet hates.

For a few years I couldn't understand why it was that when on holiday, I would quite enjoy a lager, but back home it was so bland. I then found out that something like 90% of lager sold in supermarkets is actually brewed in the UK.

If I buy lager now I always check the small print

I don't like British brewed lager, it really is crap.

I noticed the local shop was empty earlier, so I popped in and treated myself to eight cans of Perla Mocna a Polish strong lager, at 7.6% it packs a decent punch, tastes nice too. I shall have a couple tonight, not had a beer for ages! Cheers!!

Indeed, and it's also why the likes of Stella Artois, enjoyed on draught in its native country of Belgium, is a totally different animal to the cack sold in cans here in supermarkets, under the same name, ditto Kronenbourg, San Miguel, Becks, etc..

It's also why I tend to avoid those (the more mainstream types of lager or beer) and opt for something more specialist, produced in smaller quantities. For example, right now I'm enjoying this superb, beautifully creamy craft beer from Poland [tip: craft beers, from ANY country, are often where it's *at*]:



...in readiness for tonight's repast, which will be homemade lamb kebabs, infused in fresh mint, cooked on the BBQ over Mesquite oak hickory woodchips, served with an assortment of Greek salads
