Yes, the Bram Stoker estate sued over Murnau's adaptation, but as you say thankfully a few copies escaped - I've seen it several times. Today it would be criticised for suggestions of anti-semitism.
The 1979 'remake' starring Klaus Kinski, whilst interesting, is not a patch on Murnau's 1922 original.
