I've seen loads of 'scary' movies and 'horror' movies, but have yet to see anything that really shocked me. Maybe I'm just thick skinned.

Me neither, except when I was younger. Some of the scenes in The Shining fucked a bit with my head... I've also always had a thing about 'haunted' hotels or houses, and dark foreboding places. Your use of 'weird' is better. I love weird! When it comes to films, I generally derive more pleasure from watching something gruesome and/or violent than I do something pleasant or safe. I like being 'shocked'...

It's funny, because I'm mostly a very laidback, cheery person with a 'sunny disposition', but generally dislike 'cheery' films... Hey, a psychiatrist would probably have a field day!

Cosy sentimentality is a turn off for me, but I do like proper Americana movies, like 'Nobody's Fool', 'The Last Picture Show' and 'The Station Agent' for instance. Each of which is beautifully done with fantastic acting.

I've a pretty wide range of film styles in my likes. A bit like music.
I just find horror, and especially grotesque violence for sake of it a bit of a cop out.
As for intense psychological horror, not sure I see the point unless you've not had any in real life. Their scripts are usually poor and attract poor talent.
There are exceptions of course... Tarintino eg are exceptions, although not alway free from blame.
But each to their own.

Me too, on both counts. And like Geoff, I get easily bored and turned off by "cosy sentimentality". I enjoy violence in films, but only if it's cleverly done, usually by leaving much of the violence to one's imagination. It doesn't need to be graphic. Often the scariest things are what our own minds conjure up...

Yup, and *that* is precisely why I like it, as it gives me a buzz. I love films or TV programmes that *fuck with your head* and leave a lasting and indelible impression..

Also, the type of films I like watching is very much dictated by mood, especially the prevailing vibe/atmosphere, and for me the weather plays a big part in that. So when it's cold, dark, raining and rather bleak outside (as it was here last night), it puts me in the mood for watching a good psychological thriller or horror film!

I like to encapsulate and further develop the foreboding mood created, by sitting in the dark at night (or with just the glow from our wood burner, somewhat spookily illuminating the room) watching something on TV with a suitably 'dark' theme - as weird and disturbing as possible, especially just before bed...

I actually find the experience rather warm and comforting (as opposed to the opposite), and in a way that's difficult to describe. Dunno if that makes any sense?
