Room 101/'Grumpy Old Men' thread

Guys,

This was a popular style of thread on other forums where I used to be a member, so we'll see what it's like here...

List your top pet hates - things that really piss you off in life. Don't hold back either - there are no restrictions on this thread other than what's in our ethos and dictated by common sense :)

So let's hear all your whinges and moans! I'll kick off my 'Top-10' with:

1) Two-faced people: tossers who are all 'nicey nicey' to your face, but who slag you off behind your back.

2) Horrible people with no manners who are completely disrespectful: ignoramuses who don't automatically treat their fellow man with deserved due respect and courtesy.

3) Ditherers of any description: usually the kind who crawl along everywhere at 30 M.P.H, holding folk back (like me) who are in a hurry, those who take forever to move forward at roundabouts, or people who take ages to do things, such as answer emails, return phone calls, or send things as promised.

4) Self-appointed Traffic Police Officers: wankbags who hog the outside lane on motorways and refuse to move over to let you pass, just because they're doing the legal speed limit, or tosspots who block upcoming closed lanes on motorways 100s (or even sometimes 1000s) of yards before the lane is actually closed, holding everyone behind back, just to stop you zooming past the inside or outside queue and pulling in much nearer to where the lane is actually closed (but not right at the last minute) - this really does my tits right in!!! :steam:

I've never known such a nation of orderly queue lovers as Brits! ;)

5) Anything to do with political correctness and those who uphold it - get a life, ya softies!

6) Anything whatsoever to do with politics - nothing is more yawn-inducing boring!

7) People who refuse to even try to control their kids in public places, letting them run riot. If you can't be arsed to bring them up properly then don't have any in the first place!!

8) Scroungers and layabouts, particularly those who ponce money off the State when they could quite easily work, and empty-headed morons who have kids just to claim benefit and fund their worthless, layabout lifestyles (and shell-suit wearing).

9) 'Celebrity' lifestyle magazines and anything relating to promoting what such useless airheads get up to in their private lives, and moronic programmes such as Big Brother.

10) Shit food and service in restaurants, and a 'quantity before quality' mentality. The 'ready meal' obsession, and the general lack of food standards here in the UK compared to elsewhere in Europe.

Now let's hear all about what rips your knitting - and don't be shy! :eyebrows:

Marco.

I currently have two bees in my bonnet - the one about rudeness being one. Just look at some of the recent posts elsewhere in the forum by and in response to one of our recently joined members. He's just had a go at Stan now:doh:

Member is a term that I think applies particularly well in this case !:eyebrows:

The other one, Marco (and this is not a personal go at you, but you raised the subject), is people who tear around in cars as though they own the friggin' road, pissing the rest of us off with their ill considered and downright dangerous manouvres.

I am currently on enforced "holiday" due to another driver paying particular attention (NOT !) to other road users in front of him(me).

And I am currently in recuperation following a serious operation as a result. I just hope that my physical repair is such that I do not have to have a follow up operation of potentially greater seriousness than the first.

The psychological, physical & fiscal distress the incident has caused me so far defies description.

The most annoying aspect of the speeding thing is that if you do the maths the time saved on travelling times is very insignificant - you're talking 30 minutes on a journey from Manchester to London (around 210 miles = 3 hours at 70 mph) on a clear run (in itself extremely unlikely) at 70 mph compared to 80mph.

And the number of drivers talking on hand-held mobiles is rediculous - how often do you see them attempting to perform manouvres which require 2 hands on the wheel, but the phone stays clamped to the ear, and the manouvre is poorly and dangerously executed. FFS, you can get a Bluetooth headset for less than £20.00 in Tesco !

I am going to stop there, as my temper is (justifiably) starting to rise.

Chris:steam:

Hi Marco, Not quite on thread but ......
1) aren't your points 7) and 8) mutually explanatory, certainly 8) answers your closing question in 7).
2) I don't know where I got the idea from  :) , but do you spend a lot of time driving around the country? I used to until abut 5 years ago and I used to hold similar opinions - seems things haven't got any better.
With my tongue ever so slightly in my cheek, could I suggest adding to the list people who ask for comments but get tetchy when they aren't all complimentary? (Ouch!!). But it's perhaps a good job that we are not all alike because, if I were running this forum a certain lingling 'ding-a-ling' wouldn't get to post !
Just trying to be constructive, honest ;) - I fully accept your (Admin/Owners) right to run the forum as you see fit - he who pays the piper.........etc.
Fitting that I should end the post on a Scottish note (piper) eh?
Cheers,

Hi Dave,

2) I don't know where I got the idea from, but do you spend a lot of time driving around the country?

---

I used to do that, in the days when I had to 'work hard' to earn a living - now I just 'work smart' ;)

And those types of w*nkers would always get in my way when I used to have about 20-30 customer appointments a day all over Scotland, and my time was limited.

It was always rush, rush, rush, zooming everywhere at 100 miles per hour. I used to work 15-hour days, six, sometimes seven days a week, building up my business.

These days it's very different, as I'm in chill mode now :smoking:

TBH, I'm semi-retired, having 'made my mark', so to speak, in business before I was 40 (now 43). I'm mortgage free and have no debts whatsoever. Now it's just a case of cherry-picking my clients and taking work on when I feel like it

But I had to work bloody hard to get where I am now!!

Marco.

Here are a few of mine
People who are rude
People who cannot be bothered to use a zebra crossing if 100m away and those do that with Kids
Mobile phones used as means to listen to music The music is usually pretty bad and sounds shit
Drama kings/queens come on get a life!!!!
Celebrity culture Sorry I refuse to see celebrities as role models
Politics/Spin
People that back stab
People who can only see the worst in everything Come on get a life yes it may be hard but live it
The popular press ahhhhhhhhhhhhh
Extreme thinking
Gang culture

Here's my starter for ten :)

1. Drivers who don't stop at pedestrian crossings, even when they're right outside the Park gates. I'm tempted to walk out anyway and teach the bastards a lesson, but that really would be 'cutting off my nose...' ;)

2. People in front of you who suddenly stop walking to talk to their mate and leave you stumbling over their thoughtless asses.

3. Pulling matches out of the box only to find that the first 3 you try have already been used before and put back in there for safekeeping. Same goes for the 'wrong' knives and forks in the drawer.

4. Slow service at 'fast' food establishments.

5. Surly shop staff.

6. The Daily Mail. I used to read it for a laugh (to see how the 'other side' saw the world) but I found it's overwhelmingly negative world outlook started to infect my brain like a virus! No wonder so many people out there look so grumpy!

7. Politicians in suits.

8. Politicians in suits blaming the system for their fraudulent activities and thieving from the tax-payer.

9. Tan shoes.

10. Warm beer.

People who don't take time to stop, look, listen and think.

People who won't spare the time to appreciate the extraordinary beauty of the world that surrounds them.

People who think that business matters more than people, and that their business is more important than anyone else's.

Television programs that spend the first five minutes telling you what they're going to do, three minutes doing it, five minutes telling you what they're going to do in the second half, five minutes of adverts, five minutes telling you what they did in the first half and what they're going to do in the second half, two minutes doing it and five minutes telling you what they did. And they want to give half the license fee to commercial TV to make programmes that are so crap that no advertiser would spend good money being associated with them.

Banks.

George Bush. (Gone but not forgotten).

UKIP.

The Daily Mail.

Wasps

Fair weather freinds

people who cross the road and stare at you as you approach them

TV

Shit music (ie. anything I deem shit..)

Most politicians

Ironing

Animal cruelty

'Reality' TV

People who bang on about 'PC gone mad'

The Daily Mail

Small motorbikes with unfeasibly loud engines.

'Hello' magazine

Cyclists who think traffic lights don't apply to them and that they have the right to ride on the pavement as the mood takes them.

That's about it really. I'm much more tolerant than I used to be!

Bahby,

That's your fault for going out in that lemon and cerise tutu and high-heeled shtrappy shandles! :lolsign: ;)

Marco.

1. Shell suits.

2. Slobs who walk around public places drinking cans of beer.

3. Groups of people who hold lengthy conversations in the middle of the footpath, or supermarket aisle. Especially those who get shirty when you walk straight through em.

4. Dog shit on pavements.

5. Shopping with women.

6. People who do the "school run" in enormous 4x4s. When a hatchback would do.

7. Loud music in cars that sounds like someone trying to escape from a sealed dustbin.

8. Those who ring up at dinner time, usually from far away places, and start a sales pitch in some barely identifiable language.

9. Self importance.

10. Those whose lives revolve around greed and status.

Yeh, Right on!

And another thing....

People who insist on using sexual innuendo at every opportunity. Nudge Nudge Wink Wink know what I mean schmoosie?

Yes I do know what you mean, now f*ck off and irritate somebody else.

1) Chav scroungers.

2) Coke heads

3) Absolutists

4) Reductionist-objectivists

5) Socialists

6) Apologists

7) Bureuacrats

8) Liars

9) Cheats

10) Bullies/megalomaniacs.

Not sure if I ought to post here as I’m becoming too much of a grumpy old man as it is, but Marco you have invited contributions, so here is my list:

1. Most things ‘Made in China’ – usually badly made, unreliable junk.

2. Junk mail.

3. Tele salespeople who phone you as you are about to sit down to eat.

4. ‘Blow ins’ in magazines that fall out on the floor.

5. Publicans who don’t know to use cask jackets and let their ale become too cold.

6. Litter louts who seem to follow the dictum ‘out of sight out of mind’ and are too bloody lazy to keep their crisp packets, takeaway packaging or drink’s cans until they find a litterbin. Instead they either drop the litter when they have finished with it, or stuff it into the bushes or hedge of someone’s garden.

7. Cats who defecate in gardens other than their owners – usually mine. And dog owners who, having gone to the trouble of picking up their dog’s faeces, can’t be bothered to find a ‘dog poop’ bin and so simply drop the bag and its contents on the way side.

8. Lorry drivers who indicate as they pull out to change lane.

9. Drivers who leave moving out of a blocked lane to the last minute.

10. Expanded polystyrene as a packaging material. Will take years to biodegrade and the fragments are difficult to sweep up.

11. People who prefix your number with 141, so you don’t know who called.

12. People who abuse the welfare state and think the world owes them a living.

13. Mealy mouthed apologists for the creeping surveillance state who state: ”If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear”.

14. Those who, having realised that we have made a total mess of this planet, think the easiest solution is not to rethink their lifestyle but to go out and colonise the Moon and other planets. Don’t they realise that we don’t own the planet, rather we are supposed to be looking after it for future generations?

15. The EU and the oppressive CE regulations, and for foisting the 16A (!) Euro plug on us.

To provide a counterbalance to some of the dislikes proposed by other members I’ll add:

Royalists
Unquestioning empiricists

And some of my (probably obvious) pet hates

Religious zealots
Apologists for totalitarian regimes

Oh, and finally

Being repeatedly asked to ‘log in’ on AoS during a lengthy session.

Phew – rant over! I think I had better put on some calming music and open a bottle of wine.

Which browser are you using, Barry? Grab yourself the latest version of Mozilla Firefox and see if it cures your issue with involuntary logouts. I recently moved to Firefox and it is streets ahead of all the other browsers I've used, including Apple's own Safari.

At the moment BT Yahoo Broadband. I do have Mozilla Firefox. Should I try typing 'AoS' into the Firefox search engine and then store in 'Favourites'?

I'm surprised about that, Barry. Do you get an error message before you're logged out? Having AOS as a Favourite won't affect the logging out issue. Does it happen when you're writing a very lengthy post? PM me if you want to talk it through further!

In no particular order...

* Bitterness

* Laziness

* Pomposity

* Smugness

* Management Speak - Those pompous smug fuckers that repeatedly use phrases like 'Taking a helicopter view', 'Blues sky thinking' and 'Delivering the synergies' etc etc - Arseholes!

* Dumb shites who drive a car through one of our mux cabinets and cause 40 grands worth of damage meaning I have to stay up all night fixing it in the bouncing rain. Again! :steam:

*Dick heads - This is a vast topic beyond the scope of this little rant.

* Fast food joints that show a picture of some huge sumptuous looking offering but actually serve up a tiny flaccid piece of crap that you wouldn't feed to your dog. Pretty much most of them!

Oh sod it, I'm going to stop before I 'go off on one'! <wanders away growling>

You can sense them in the inside lane. You are in the middle lane doing about 80 and it is a game of just keeping ahead of them enough to close them down as they hurtle towards the slower moving car. Twats.

I'm now old enough and know myself well enough (I think), that I don't have any right to complain about my fellow man's shortcomings on the road, in government or otherwise, as I've committed many of these errors in the past. I truly cringe when I look back and some of the wrongs can never be put right....... Don't feel angry at fellow human beings, they more often than not don't know and you might find that just one or two are aware of the ways they've pee'd off another and will endeavour not to do so in future :)

Marco, I used to have to experience a truly agressive driver on my 20 mile trip to work in the eighties. He drove a Seat Ibiza "Brio" (whatever that version was) and he caned it mercilessly, cutting other drivers up in a hugely dangerous manner. It seemed he lived on adrenalin and needed the thrill and "rush." by this time, I was a member of the IAM and tried to keep a distance between myself and everyone else, a situation he took advantage of regularly :(

If I have a current gripe, it's with Microsoft and the bloatware that is Windows!!!! I've just been given a write-off mid-noughties laptop which came with all the discs. the trouble is, the XP disc was version 1 (pre SP2) and it's taken a week to properly download all 200 or so updates and service packs, as sometimes one lot went in too soon and wouldn't load. Doing a "System Restore" means starting over etc etc...... I think we're finally stable and instead of the constant distraction of getting this one right, I can now finish off my college essay on the other PC I use....

Can I just add:

People who bang on at length in an internet forum about something that pisses them off (immigrants stealing all our jobs, speed cameras being a sign of creeping Nazism or somesuch) , then ends with 'of course, you can't say that any more'.

Yes you can; in fact you just did, mate!

Bus drivers who wait at every stop because they're 'early' :)

Buses... What are those? I haven't been on public transport of any description in about 10 years! :eyebrows:

I hate the inconvenience and like to be in control of where and exactly when I travel, so it's in the car for me, full-stop. I know what you mean, though :)

From my vague memories of using buses, I would add ones that go from A to B via Z... I.E, all round the houses, turning a journey that would take 10 minutes in the car into half and hour or more, just to pick up some shell-suited chavs in God-awful, miles from anywhere, housing estates!

Marco.

Hi Marco,
I assume (one shouldn't assume, should one?) that other people may be thinking it but I'll put it into print, in the spirit of mutual friendship: -
Have you ever thought that you are in danger of becoming a snob?
If everyone thought like you and had the wherewithall to do it, the roads would be jammed, nobody would be able to go anywhere and the world would rapidly go to hell in a hand cart. Everyone should use public transport where it is practical. Obviously going from A to B via Z is NOT practical. Housing estates are the only option available to most of us.:)
I admit that I am grumpy and old and male so I am qualified to state that posts like your's, if to be taken literally, do nothing to alleviate the first two of the above three qualifications. :(
Don't get me wrong, I have some sympathy with your point of views but I do think that they are better kept to one's self.
Count your blessings, of which you obviously have plenty.:).
In friendship.
Cheers,

Hi Hamish,
I would venture, with respect, to correct you: -
There is nothing wrong with politics, it's the bloody self agrandising POLITICIANS and the stupid laws they pass to pass their time, increase their take of what is rightfully ours and justify their existance that is the problem.:steam::steam::steam::(:(:(:(
Cheers,

Not using public transport at the moment might save you from catching swine flu.

People who sneeze or cough and don't cover their mouths or nose. The Japanese have it right wear a mask.

yeah sorry i agree .. i should have been more acurate in my rantings

politics its self is a beautiful thing, fasinating in all its complexitys

the people who do it as thier jobs are for the most part the problem, but that in its self is one of the things that makes the subject and theory so interesting eg the theory and practice of communism ... a fantastic idea until you introduce people....

Davey baby, chillax. 'Rants' here should always be read with a pinch of salt, than literally, such is the nature of the thread :eyebrows:

It would take a lot though to get me to use public transport in this country, as it is total shit on many levels... Maybe if I were in, say, Switzerland it would be different ;)

Marco.

I drove into work once this week and it just served to remind me how much I hate driving in rush-hour traffic. I'd far rather be surrounded by a bus-load of people getting to work than a load of cars driven by numpties who should never have passed their test!

My blood pressure has been so much lower since I started using public transport to get to work!

Oh I know from the past what it's like, Nick. I can well understand why you'd choose to use public transport, even with it being as bad as it is - that is why I work from home and live in (largely rural) North Wales, miles away from any cities, and the rat race and hustle and bustle that goes with it.

The only "rush-hour traffic" I encounter is when opening the door for the cats and they all rush through to get fed!
