Spinning Today (Classical version)

Every now and then I try Prokofiev.
Last night is was Piano concertos 3 & 5 and the 2nd violin concerto from this CD box set - all highly recommended recordings in the Penguin Guide.

Some interesting and some beautiful moments, but overall the point of Prokofiev's music continues to elude me!

Mmmm - fascinating music - reasonably tonal, nice percussion/drums in places in the symphonies - excellent sq.

Don't you just hate it when record companies do that? Perhaps it was their way of attracting people's attention to Aulis Sallinen, who it must be said is not a well known composer.

I hadn't heard of him. Is he 'modern' and what does he sound like?

Yep, quite modern - but mostly tonal -- Try some!

Wow, Jerry. Apart from the wonderful Lieutenant Kijé, Romeo and Juliet and The Love for Three Oranges suites, which I guess you've tried and rejected, have you listened to Alexander Nevsky?

Hmm -- yeah. Nowt to write home about, imo.
But I guess I was mostly thinking of Prokofiev's concertos and symphonies.
I quite like his string quartets.

He could certainly write some good tunes when he felt like it, it's just that he didn't often seem to feel like it in much of his music!

Wow - fab performance of the Walton 1st symphony - demonstration class sq from Chandos, too. Marvellous. Not my only Walton 1, by any means, but probably the best when you multiply performance x sq! - def one of the best and a keeper.

Thomson was a sadly under-rated conductor . . . For a long time a recorded BBC broadcast of his in Walton 1 was at the top of my list . . .

Have you heard Martyn Brabbins' Walton 1 (& 2) on Hyperion?
