The original Swedish version, and IMO the best (although the remake with Daniel Craig is worth watching as well).

Just finished watching, very moving and as I recall pretty faithful to the book.

We had rediffusion with the ole ABC box on the window sill to change the channels. I remember my Dad moving the TV to another room , to change channels i would have to get off settee through door down hallway into old room , pull back the curtain turn switch on the box.Quote:

The Keep (Channel 4) Now
Rare chance to see Michael Manns flawed horror film based on F Paul Wilsons book of the same name. German soldiers are sent to guard a pass in Romania, garrison themselves in an odd castle and all hell breaks lose. There is an HP Lovecraft aspect to this book and film. Worth a watch.
Loved the book Neil, the film was good too.
I live in hope that Mann agrees to do a directors cut, his original 210 min version which the studio rejected and then butchered. However I doubt it he apparently strongly dislikes the film, hence no DVD or Blu Ray release. I haven't seen it in years and its still quiet good in places, but the flaws, due to the studio demanded editing bollocks are quiet obvious through older eyes.Quote:

Much better than the first film, quiet enjoyed this despite the historical inaccuracies.

Funny some of the actors who crop up in it. Uncle Phil from The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air and Commander Riker from Star Trek TNG who has a short spoken part as a small time hood who gets busted.
John Huston's masterpiece from 1951, The African Queen starring Humphrey Bogart, Katharine Hepburn and Robert Morley. Camera by God(aka Jack Cardiff) made 11 times its budget so pretty successful in its day and still superb. This is the restored Blu Ray and is an astonishingly good picture etc. Common knowledge I know but this was filmed in Africa and only Huston and Bogey stayed well, due to their prodigious whisky drinking and no water....good lads ;) now where is my bottle

Yeah, they are all great films, as is Casablanca . he had a look to die for, and was a superb actor too. Cagney was more versitile and probably more talented, but didnt quite cut it in the looks department, or the charisma stakes. The Duke had it all like Bogey too and thats why he was so popular. made a lot of good films out of poor scripts too.
Bob Mitcham was the man for tough parts; Had a lot of time for him... a tough nut himself, as was Burt Lancaster
Nothing against Cagney, but Bogie was the man in my book. His movies just ooze character. All down to him and the great direction. Must admit Paul Newman is also an equal fav of mine. Cool Hand Luke is my favourite film. Just brilliant! Also. If you've not seen it, check out 'Nobody's Fool', very classy and some of the best acting you'll ever see.
They all had proper screen presence. Very rare you get that in a contemporary leading man. They are all a bit too 'everyman' nowadays. I'm thinking of your Damons and DiCaprios. Like comparing men to boys.
Lawrence Fishburn has it. And Will Smith. But I'm struggling to think of anyone else under 70
yeah I like Cool Hand.... got it on dvd. what we have is a lack of communication:D sad end too. not a huge Newman fan but he made some great films. Think i preferred Redford out of the competing parties. 3 days of the condor was a favourite
Maybe not a 'leading man' as such, but Geoffrey Rush impresses me hugely. Have you seen The Tailor of Panama? It's a masterpiece and Rush steals it from the start. Even Pierce Brosnan was excellent in it (He's underrated, very capable in the right role).

Johnny Depp is a bit of a screen draw too
Depp is good he just stars in rubbishy films. Donnie Brasco was his stand-out and that was years ago.
He's in all those Tim Burton films which are all unwatchable. Ruined his career if you ask me.
