Yes the LS3\5a's are very good for nearfield listening.

My latest retro speakers are not exactly mini monitors suitable for a kitchen although they would fit into the original one in my house that we now use as a breakfast room, the kitchen is now in the old scullery.

A few mates have now heard them and like me are gobsmacked how good they are. There's a pair of really special amps currently in transit to me that are perfect for them.

There's a guy selling a lot of Japanese pressings for not unreasonable starting prices - he's listed 20 pages of stuff & some of the auctions are ending between now(ish) and this time next week, but there's heaps of interesting stuff - especially some absolute corking jazz records and not many bids for any of it - potential bargains to be had folks!

Andr'e, have you ever heard any vintage Pioneer speakers? I've heard a couple of models that are really impressive when well driven. Just a thought if you want to go down that route.

Well remembered, Andre - yes, I do - and I love it, though more for the looks and build than the sound - it sounds good, though not earth-shattering, but good - now running into the Wharefdale Super Diamonds with Techie SL-150/Nagaoka MP-15 in the "record room" - does a very respectable job in a tiny room that is retro themed. :)

Better, I couldn't give you percentages :) The thing is the standard output transistors have pretty low current gain & imho this loads the driver (which happens to be part of the voltage gain stage a little too much.

So I modified the amps to accept MJ11016 NPN darlingtons as output transistors, which have a current gain of about 1000 in the audio band. There appears to be less crossover distortion as a result. As the driver was more lightly loaded I decreased the value of the resistor that provides the class A power & again there was an improvement.

Think I'll have to change the op amps to something decent as they frankly deserve it. Only need six of them after all :D

I'll use OPAs, but i think the 134? Might be wrong on that score...

Just secured my third 405 :) We now have (assuming all is well with this one) six channels of amplification :yay:

That's it, no more power amps needed... I have twenty (yes - 20) channels worth of power amps :eek:

Or if you like, four amps per channel with a 5.1 setup :cool: Active everywhere here I come...

Bingo i won it, they are actually very thin on the ground & look unappealing to a lot but they are actually good sounding Turntables, keeps within the era i'm obsessed with aswell :eyebrows: I'll fit either a Colton 'MC101' or Neat Corporation 'G30' tonearm with Goldring 'G800' cart.. providing it survives the post.

I always liked the look of the old Leak 'Truespeed' - very early '70s. :)

Do you intend using it, or will it simply be an objet d'art? I ask, because I'm sure one could do better than either the Colton MC101 or Neat G30 arm.

It's to be used everyday..Re the arm, must be early 70's.. :eyebrows: i want the two mentioned but would go for a late Hadcock 'Unipose ' if one came along.. I used to own both those arms & prefered the sound over the arm that a lot chose back then :)

If you want to keep it original, they were mostly used with Connoisseur SAU2 arms back in the day.

Ah yes! - I was trying to think of the arm identity. Too lazy to dig out my copy of 1971 Hi Fi Yearbook!

I assume the Truespeed is a 'floating' belt-drive design.

Are unipivot arms happy on these decks? I seem to rememember there was a fashion for fitting Hadcock unipivot arms onto the Linn LP12, so I guess they can work well together.

Thats correct the one i had many moons ago had the Connoisseur..I'm gonna give that Ariston arm a try first see what it sounds like..

Aye they are.. They have transit bolts so were all ok for nay damage in transit..
