Funk SL-1200 Platter & Arm

All valid observations, Michael.

However, in order to get a proper handle on where I'm coming from, you need to hear a direct comparison between the MN aluminium platter and the Funk and/or (perhaps) Mike's 'Engineering Thermo Plastic' platter.

It's a no-brainer going from the stock platter to the MN aluminium one, so in that respect, I concur with your observations :)

The Thorens TD 738 is more or less identical to an EMT 938 and the DD-EMT's rely on a very powerful motor combined with a very light platter so the resulting sound should be ideal but I can assure you it wasn't! It was far from bad (and a whole lot better than the diverse rubber-banders) but still the Techy is the one which makes me dance:)

The bottom line is if you think it's better ,then it is better ! All I was trying to point out was the way a DD system works is not quite the same as ye olde belt drive , perhaps others can explain it better but simply putting a high mass platter on a 1200 does not mean you will get better or more presise rotation .

It's just not that simple , that's all but enjoy your deck I'm sure it's marvelous:)

Sorry, didn't want to upset anybody. Of course I didn't make a valid comparison between the FF and the MN platter (t'aint easy in Austria!).
My thoughts are a comparison between high-mass and low-mass platter.
I always thought that the superiority of the (acrylic) FF and the (thermoplastic) MN platter is the better damping, because even the copper-ally-platter is not completely acoustically inert (in reality NOTHING is!). The "plastic"-platters do have a quite different resonance characteristic which suits some systems more, as always the proof is in the listening!
BTW even the resonance of the feet and the support will be affected by a higher mass.

The SP10 mk3 is a high mass platter design but the motor and PLL is entirely different and designed to cope with the higher mass , the mk2 is in fact very different again being a closed motor design , where the magnet/Rotor is not part of the platter like the 1200 , the mk2 platter weighs 2.9 kilos .

It is a part of the inner platter that the outer platter gets bolted to.

Much more too it than mass - much about how the equal and opposite vibrations from the groove/stylus are handles. If they don't leave the vinyl through a well matched interface and then disapated or absorbed, there's a real effect of these vibrations coming back to the stylus and causing smearing or resonances etc.

That effects perception of timing or giving more energy to parts of the spectrum etc etc.

I'm talking platter mats here rather than control systems - that is probably about keeping with design specs..

Yes and with the mk3 the platter/magnet are integral like the SL1200 mk2 which is known as an open design.

No I'm afraid I can't make any meaningful comments about the Funk ! It was too brief and with a different arm and cart , what I heard sounded very good ! I'm just very happy with the Vantaged platter as it is .

Poor David, there is no definite conclusion, because I think nobody heard all available platter variations, and if, there is no clear answer what is "better" under all circumstances.
As with all things audio only the listener can decide if he likes the sound or not. There was an interesting article in LP-Magazin (Germany) a few months ago where the editor referred to his findings at an audio show and was amazed that different audiophiles he knows and trusts, rated some demonstrations completely different :scratch: .
There is no "truth" in audio!
