I had a similar issue a few months ago in one of my listening rooms so I bought some de-humidifier boxes and that has solved it.

I also use a cork/rubber mat and I rarely get a static issue but it does occasionally happen which is why I think it is environmental. Never had the mat lift off with the record though, although that used to happen sometimes with the felt mat I used to use.
Yup. Central heating dries the air and will increase static. You can buy gizmos which hook over radiators with a water trough which humidifies. Arthur was talking on tuesday of a gadget he has planned for dealing with static. I put a wet sponge in a dish:)
Aye, I guess a previous owner had a hum problem as it's disconnected in the plug too.
