As I suspected, then, and that's your problem, as those types of drivers are voiced VERY differently to the much more sought after vintage units, hence the low price being asked! ;)

Of the ones I've heard so far, yes... But that doesn't mean that they're bad - far from it, just less stunning (to my ears)! They only way you'd 'get' this, Dave, is if you listened to examples of both drive units, used inside the same cabinets.
However, I must stress that the only way to hear vintage Tannoy drive units properly is to bin their (pretty horrid by modern standards) original crossovers, which simply serve to make them sound 'tubby', euphonically coloured, and dreadfully old-fashioned! :exactly:
Some of the vintage cabinets Tannoy produced, however, were actually rather good at what they were designed to do, and certainly those used on the original GRFs (and on my Lockwood Majors, amongst others) come into that category.

Connex Audio's description seems spot-on, I like the use of Litz windings and the silver content alone would make them bargains. I'm looking for something that will outperform my Russ Andrews Powerkords and, having heard John's silver cable originated from eBay, I'm impressed. I'll do a full comparative review and may buy a few more if they're successful.
The good thing about any Russ Andrews/Kimber products is that they always sell on for such good prices.
Are we really calling any wire in sleeve Litz these days? I though the point of Litz was the low capacitance due to close proximity of the strands allowed by a lacquer on each strand rather than a separate sleeving.
I don't think the dielectric (insulation) is significant with Litz as such. The defining factor would be the weave or plaiting. Some recommend loose and random, others relatively tight and regular. My guess would be the former is optimum!
No, not quite. The effect on capacitance is zero, as all the strands are connected together at their ends, so each strand is equi-potential.
What Litz construction is all about is the reduction of inductance, through the maximum utilisation of the conductor cross-section. At high frequencies, current tends to flow through a conductor in a cylindrical 'sheath', of extent or thickness referred to as the "skin depth". The skin depth at high frequencies (radio frequencies) is usually less than the radius of the wire, so increasing the inductance. By using many (insulated) wires of small diameter, although each will have a correspondingly higher inductance, because there are many strands in parallel the overall inductance is lower than it would be if a single conductor of the same cross-section were used. The strands have to be individually insulated, otherwise current would be concentrated on the outermost strands, as it would if a single conductor were used.
Incidently by "high frequency", for a copper wire, the skin depth is 0.66mm at 10kHz, so unless the wire diameter is greater than 1 mm there is no need to be concerned about the effect of 'skin depth'.
