I heard a perished elastic band was the issue. But the 50p 'fix' sounds more likely, you don't get owt for nowt these days.

It's a quid in the meter these days.
I thought things had moved on to cards that you have to buy?
I think I can remember as far back as when they took a florin (two bob). What coins does he put in it these days?
Your mention of a coin meter reminds me of a mate from the early 2000s, who had a coin-operated flat screen telly. He found a way to get into the meter, so he just kept re-using the same coin. He got demand letters a couple of times, then nothing. I think the firm went bust.
Then one day I went round to find the screen had a shoe-shaped hole in it from a barney he'd had with his missus. Curiously, the telly was still working (sort of). Worst mate ever! for reasons I'll post about at some point.
Pound coins.
One of my aunties used to have a coin meter 'under the stairs' but that took the old 50p coins, the big ones.
She was not poor by any stretch so no idea why they had a coin meter but she was pretty scatter-brained so the power would often go out and you'd have to find 50p in the dark then find the meter slot in the dark.
