There have been chips available that convert above that rate and have the problem sorted. The 2007 release of the WM8716 went largely unnoticed;). I am happy to say that it did not escape me, and I am using it in the Beresford Caiman:eyebrows:. The WM8716 even has a dual mode feature, which allows for the use of two of them with each one decoding one channel. It also samples at 64x, which produces a fraction of the errors that are found in the 8x OS chips. I don't quite understand all the manufacturer's explanation, so you would have to look at their datasheet for further clarification.
I did test the Caiman against both the previous and the latest DAC1. The WM8716/LM4562 combination is superior to the PCM179x/NE5532. Or your money back, including postage:).
