For myself, I find that I get the most out of Takemitsu's work when I'm not actively listening to it - it sets a certain mood, a reasonably comfortable space that, as a listener, you settle into, and then as you're on the point of forgetting that you're listening to it, there'll be a sudden shift, or jarring event, that makes your heart race. I like stuff that does this - gently accustoms you to a certain space, and then jolts you!
