That one really is - no-one else comes close to such dancing over the keys.

    This is interesting.
A recent review in Fanfare opined that the Gal concerto is so good it should join the Elgar and Dvorak in the core repertoire.

My CD copy arrived yesterday, and yup, it's a very fine concerto that is continuing to grow on me after a couple of listens. Ruminative and soulful for most of the first 2 mvts, with a (over, in parts?) perky finale.

The Elgar is said to be a revelatory performance as well, but I've not tried that yet.

I enjoy all of the Takemitsu that I've heard, but I find these later works particularly engaging.

Here's a recording of one the key pieces from this collection.

I really must try some Takemitsu sometime. It's a real hole in my collection. Any hint on what to start with?

It depends what you like I guess.

Denon's 'Orchestral Works' collection, in four volumes, contains a good mix of pieces from throughout his career (nice recordings too).

Here are amazon links for I and II. These include some of the later works in which he introduces elements of traditional Japanese music - really interesting.

If you like more minimal arrangements, I heartily recommend this "chamber music" collection - it's the set that really switched me on to Takemitsu.

Takemitsu. Yes, there's a definite fascination to his music. I keep feeling that I almost get it - but never quite achieve oneness with the music!

Yesterday -- my fascination with the Saint Saens piano concertos continues with this well reviewed CD -->

    Hmm.
As with many of Hough's recordings, the playing is spectacular, but he doesn't seem to be involved much at an emotional level. It's all kind of gee-whiz matter of fact.

And I picked up this double CD for £1 in a good ol' charity shop last week.
I'm very impressed - the Beethoven Pathetique sonata may well be perfect!
The Schubert and Liszt are wonderful, too. Not so sure about the Brahms sonata, but hey, you can't have everything!

Takemitsu's 'From me Flows What You Call Time' is well worth seeking out. It is available on the Sony label.
