I was sure it had been mentioned in this thread, but can't find it now... Battle: Los Angeles (2011) - watched a couple of nights ago - real adrenalin rush of a film - even my missus was on the edge of her seat and she's not a massive Action or Sci-Fi Film fan. Well worth it if you like that sort of thing.
Yes, I'm fairly sure I mentioned it. A real surprise for me as I was expecting the usual sub-intelligent crap. It was superb!

Watched again, 2nd time
Good film about the Tour de France 2009
Mostly about the HTC team and Cavendish the super sprinter
Enjoyable even the 2nd time around and that's with Liggett and Sherwen commentating
S'funny HTC pulled the plug on what must have been cheap advertising, especially since cycling has now become so big
I'm guessing £10m a year would run the team nicely and I believe they paid a lot lkess than that.
Still find it hard to believe they just stopped. Winning team, walk away. Bonkers

Rossi makes life so much more interesting when he has a decent bike.
Fairly sure I heard the roar of the crowd when he really got going
Hopefully MotoGP will be well worth watching this year, especially as I rate Qatar as a boring track

Thought Rossi was a byword for MotoGp and other things exciting.
I imagine parallels between some of the different riders/drivers with Rossi out somewhere else.
It was odd watching it and realising that this was exciting stuff as Rossi fought his way forward
The circuit lets the whole spectacle down so I'm hoping for even better to come.
I used to watch F1 avidly for years but gave up when I reckon it became too boring
Think the real question I'm asking is there a F1 driver with a huge talent and real character. James Hunt is possibly the closest I get. Jimmy Clark comes to mind but I didn't know him well enough. He may well have been supremely talented and quiet
I have heard of Rossi! Yes, of course: Hamilton, Raikonnen and possibly Webber fit that category. Alonso is an all-round great. Vettel is the spoiled brat we all love to hate - gifted the best car in F1. The one thing F1 is not is boring!

My guess is that Rossi stands alone with the talent to gain 9 world titles, so Schumacher esque but with a character.
Difficult to explain if you haven't seen him performing over a period.
I watched him come up from 125, through 250 and into the top class.
An entertaining nutter with talent very rarely seen. Probably the best bike rider ever.
Not just my imagination I don't think as spectators in many different countries come to races all over the world to see Rossi perform.
He seems to have something I can't quite describe in words.
There are other very talented riders, some now may even be better than him, but not that bonkers character

Senna probably the greatest of them all, but my goodness was he single-minded.

The MotoGP season continues in 2 weeks at a new track, Austin TX
To see the very best track, IMO it has to be Philip lsland in Aus. around September/October -too tricky for F1 :)
Think Rossi is still something special and hopefully will show it in the forthcoming rounds

Heart wrenching, moving, hard to watch at times but uplifting too, based on a true story about how events that day affected María Belón's family.
This is a beautifully done, respectful movie about the horror of boxing day 2004 when so many died horribly, swept away. The figure who died is a mind numbing 280000....
The acting is powerful particularly the children involved.
I watched the Blu ray and I am not convinced its much better than the DVD would be.
Worth watching but I would be very surprised if you won't need tissues - I did.

What can I say, very little without ruining it but what I can say is this is in my opinion a fantastic film, amazing to look at, with excellent action scenes, special effects and brilliant acting particularly from Benedict Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch :eek:

Surprising story in may ways and well worth the 4 hours.
A nice guy and not daft.
If you don't know much ab out the story you are in for a lot of big surprises

I've seen them all. Of the Coen brothers' canon, I like 'Raising Arizona', 'Big Lebowski' and of course 'Fargo'.

I forgot they did Raising Arizona. Actually I didn't know that No Country.. was a Cohen Brothers film until the closing credits although I suspected it might be a little way into it.
And I agree Bardem is brilliant. Everyone is really good in fact. I like the nineteen -seventy's setting as well.

Saw it last night (in 2D, of course) and loved it. It has great respect for the characterisations and humour of TOS, good simple storyline, superb action sequences and a top menacing performance from Benedict Cumberbatch as Khan. Pine and Quinto, especially, have truly embraced the original characters and are believable as them, quite a feat.

I saw it last night at the cinema in 3d. Got to say I could do without the 3d which was blurred in places. Some flaws in the story annoyed me. Kirk and the baddy flying through space from Enterprise to the other ship. They had to reach a hatch opened by Scotty. It wasn't an airlock so there would have been explosive decompression of the vast engineering bay.
But loved the characters who totally understand the original TV series and are fantastic in their own right.

but not in normal space, only in hyper space ;)lol
Its a plot device that stops stories and films etc running in real time lol if it was real and the speed of light was as fast as ships could go well 8 years there and back to our closest star. So any further would require hibernation devices, or generation ships. Startrek is sci-fantasy not hard science fiction which could become true.
Anyway loved the film and despite a few flaws I think its one of the best Trek films of the lot so far.

Really don't know what to make of this. I have never seen the original 'Play For Today' or the stage version, but I recall the furore that surrounded it at the time. Nothing was remotely realistic or believable about it and graphic sexual dialogue is pretty old hat nowdays. Or was it meant to be some adolescent fantasy along the lines of 'If...' - not really sure.

Leo McKern was great in it.
Its a guilty pleasure..great script, old fashioned...in a "proper film" kind of way.
Watch at least once a year.
Another once a year film for me is John Milius' Big Wednesday.
Fantastic screenwriter, co-wrote the first two Dirty Harry film's and Apocalypse Now, fantastic Director too.
This film got me through my teenage years and partying when my folks were away on holiday.
Taught me about the value of friendship too.

The Outer Limits - First Season
I have been working my way through this box set again recently and loving it all over again. When I was a kid I would stay up late to watch this on BBC2 and it was a real joy to watch. Most of the stories still work though some are a bit dated.
The Galaxy Being, Don't open till Doomsday, It crawled out of the Woodwork and Production and Decay of Strange Particles, are fantastic stories.
Sadly I have discovered one of the DVDs has begun to rot so won't play right :(

Another film I ain't seen for decades - still watchable - I remember fancying the Ally Sheedy character up until she has her makeover at the end. American High School films always fascinate me, there was quite a few in the '80s - Pretty In Pink, Some Kind of Wonderful and so on. Are U.S schools really like that?

I went to the pictures today and I was unsure what to expect - not a big Brad Pitt lover here - but over all I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed the film. Plenty of action and wow moments but mostly kept within a realistic real world frame work, so no crazy super hero moments from normal people.
The films making was troubled with quite a few issues but despite that it is in my view a good film worth the price of admission.
As a side note in parts I thought it offered a good visualisation of some of what I had read in the book Coldbrook by Tim Lebbon which would make a cracking film if done right.

I liked Superman Returns - I though Kevin Spacey quite good as Lex Luthor. I see that film as continuing the Christopher Reeves period vibe but done well. The new movie has had mixed reviews so I am looking forward to reading what you think of it.
I haven't read the Max Books book so approached it with an open mind except for Brad's presence in the film which very nearly put me off going.

Yes its incredible, breathtaking, beautiful, haunting, moving and the music is fantastic too. Frankly I am gob smacked.
In away it reminds me of the massive tapestry of time and space that Mike Moorcock came up with for his Eternal Champion cycle of stories.
It was the Blu Ray I was watching.

Amazing, harrowing, moving, brutal, Korean war film. About the love between two brothers and how war brings them together, then tears them apart.
Visually stunning one of the very best war films ever made imho.

I watched and every so often, a hankering for Godzilla, or Gamera to appear and save the day would rise. The robots are well realised, as are the monsters though they bear some resemblance to those from the Gamera films - Gyaos.
Overall not terrible, watch-able but not great.

Big Gojira fan here (even enjoyed the smog monster ;)) and a big fan of Devil's Backbone, Pan's Labyrinth (even Hellboy) and haven't seen it yet.
Seeing it this Saturday at my local multiplex...getting the feeling if I "leave my brains in the foyer" I'll do well. :)

Big Gojira fan here (even enjoyed the smog monster ;)) and a big fan of Devil's Backbone, Pan's Labyrinth (even Hellboy) and haven't seen it yet.
Seeing it this Saturday at my local multiplex...getting the feeling if I "leave my brains in the foyer" I'll do well. :)

If you haven't watched a Gamera film you should the last film was very good though there is a version of Gamera Guardian of the Universe with a stunning Techno/Dance music soundtrack which in my view is better than the original which you can watch here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4POfaHXjsoM. The next two in the series are good as well http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9HWH9n64n0 and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYjsO9YKMzs the original black and white Gamera movies are fair but poor in comparison to Godzilla.

It has been a very long time since I last saw this and even then it was the highly edited for telly version. Well done to the BBC for showing it in its entirety. This is a very moving film. Funny, shocking in places and thought provoking. Everything about this film is exceptional and it thoroughly deserved the five Oscars it was awarded :cool:

Saw it at the cinema and on TV (the version I saw was not edited at all) and I have DVD copy.
Agreed: funny, shocking and thought provoking - though I find myself sympathising with Nurse Ratchett (superbly played by Louise Fletcher); she was trying to do a very difficult job without getting emotionally involved.
By the end of the film I think most people empathise with all the characters Barry. Nurse Ratchett comes over as a bit of a cow initially until one realises that this form of treatment was standard practise in those days. Things have moved on a lot in the mental health arena since then. What comes over very strongly is the improvement in the patients attitude to life and their collective conditions when they are with Mac. I wonder whether the original play was a statement on the condition of mental health treatment of the era?
Agreed - the use of electroconvulsive therapy is particularly shocking (no pun intended), but it was used extensively at the time, as was the performing of frontal lobotomies! Thank goodness mental health care has moved on.
I must re-read the book, if I can find it.

I watched this last night on BBC iPlayer and found it to be absolutely riveting. It is a dramatised account of the public spat between renowned CBS news journo Edward R. Murrow and Senator Joe McCarthy over his handling of the Army-McCarthy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Army%E2%80%93McCarthy_hearings) hearings conducted by the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Senate_Permanent_Subcommittee_on_Investigations) of which he was the chairman. It is a classy production, written and directed by George Clooney and shot in black & white which really adds mood to the proceedings. 10/10 from me... :)

Really enjoyed it. A slow, thoughtful, 'European' style film with some gorgeous photography of the Italian countryside.

I'd certainly agree with you about the limited story line Paul, but I didn't question it whilst I watched it - I was quite engrossed with the mood and atmosphere created by the characters and surroundings.
It did feel a little 'hollow' afterwards when you reflect on the film - it doesn't have any great meaning of course, but the pacing and style were right up my street ...

I found this film very hard to watch. Tarantino's stylised violence works for me in fantasy films like 'Kill Bill' but I found it very difficult to stomach here in something with more 'historical' roots ...
Great performances though and loved the cameo roles ...

I know exactly what you mean... it was a lot 'harder' film than some of his other films but I think that is what made it so special, ie, the fact he was able to bring alive a subject of that nature... Also agree reference the cameo's.. Samuel L Jackson was superb, to me he's got to be one of the best American actors of his generation!

Fantastic Russian WW2 horror film. Think Duel but with tanks and you are not too far off. Surreal at times, with an underlying supernatural element and lots of questions left unanswered. I once heard a Russian author say that great Russian literature is designed to make the reader think not be entertained and this movie does a bit of that, though it is thrilling and entertaining as well as thought provoking.
Fantastic battles, great action, very real hardware, and no evidence of budget constraints this movie is a feast for the eyes and the brain.
One of the most interesting films I have seen in quite awhile and very different.

Downhill? Duel is good, but Jaws is close to being a perfect film. After that he went downhill a bit. Close Encounters - that was a lot about nothing.

Where to start? A really compelling small film starring Eva Green and Matt Smith set in the near future. They are childhood sweethearts by the seaside who go on to live their separate lives. When they meet again in their early twenties, they fall in love. A tragic accident means that she finds herself alone again, unable to cope with the loss. So she decides to bear his clone.
The rest of the film describes his growing up, their ostracism by society for his being a 'copy', and many deep, uncomfortable moments where questions are asked and not easily answered. Intensely portrayed by Green in an outstanding role, Clone is mesmerising and unnerving and quite wonderful.
I watched Fast & Furious 6 this morning was pretty impressed, yes, it is rather unrealistic but if you want a 'balls out' action movie it's well worth a look :)

Quatermass and the Pit - BBC TV serial part of the BBC DVD including all three series Experiment, Quatermass Two and Quatermass and the Pit.
Fantastic stuff and in many ways superior to the Hammer film though I do love that and the other Hammer Quatermass films. Well worth watching if you haven't seen the originals.

Just watched the first episode of The Tunnel tonight. As I guessed, it's a remake of The Bridge. While not at all bad so far, it doesn't have the style of the Scandinavian original nor such charismatic lead actors. We shall see, but if you haven't seen The Bridge I strongly recommend it as an outstanding multi-part thriller.

I saw Enders Game on Friday - enjoyed it. Not perfect, a bit weak in places but overall a 7.5 out of 10. I haven't read the book - yet - but, I have read that it follows it fairly closely, but does omit some aspects, Ender's family history only gets a fairly shallow treatment and a few other aspects have been changed. Very much an anti war film where humanity doesn't come across that well, we are not entirely the good guys in this story.
So its worth going to see in my view.

If you haven't seen 'Drag Me To Hell' and like good horror films, it's on 5 Star in half an hour (at 9pm).
Well worth a watch if you like that sort of thing. It's a class act of it's kind and if you've not seen it, it'll have you doing a double take here and there. I'm an old cynic and not easily impressed, but I thought this was pretty good and it has some properly squirmy scenes.

Tonight it shall be Gravity in 3D and Dolby Atmos - Considering Mark Kermode has, for the first time ever said, 'This film is worth seeing in 3D', I'm expecting it to be something special. Rather excited about the audio side of things too. It's supposed to be a VERY good mix.
I'm planning on seeing Gravity this weekend. However, I shall avoid the 3D version like the plague!

I went and saw Thor The Dark World in 3D and its not a bad film at all, quite good but the 3D ruined it in my opinion.
Gravity I will go see but I am with Martin on this one 2D only....... I want to keep the contents of my stomach in my stomach as that kind of 3D the cinema can do with out....

Yep have to agree with you again... I have only seen one film in 3D (which wasn't bad when I saw it at the Cinema) but since I have bought said film and played it on my average 42" plasma at home it was miles better!

Normally I would agree with you, but this was something else. Mark Kermode has always been staunchly against 3D, but go and have a look at this and it might convince you to see it in 3D:

It's an incredible film, a real masterpiece. I don't want to give any spoilers away so I won't go into any detail here, but this is the first film I've ever seen that is a true showcase of cinema technology as well as being a great film (unlike Avatar) and I can safely say that even the best home cinema will not even get close to recreating the experience of a good cinema. All I can say is find the very best cinema you can to get the most out of it. If you don't see it in 3D, you're missing out. The 5.1/7.1 audio mix is very good, but if you have the chance to see (hear) it in Dolby Atmos, it will absolutely blow you away. Sadly, the only places to hear it in Atmos in the UK at the moment are The Olympic Studio, Barnes in London, Vue cinema Cramlington and Vue Glasgow. Empire Leicester Square is currently closed for a re-fit.

Dean Martin & Sammy Davis Jnr - back in '84 I was fifteen and had no real idea who they were. Now it's amazing to think they were still running around in major motion pictures back then. Although DM looks a bit worse for wear Sammy is brilliant. Makes even the crappest gags funny.
And Barbara Bach....mmm....how you found out you weren't gay as a kid...

A hitman who wants out is injected with a drug that will kill him if he doesn't keep his adrenaline levels at full throttle. Hugely entertaining and quite funny in parts, a bit Tarentino-esque.

Superb. Ultra realistic about gravity, weightlessness and the lack of air, one of few films to do so since 2001. Also shares with that film just two main characters. Simple story, brilliantly executed. If you don't find yourself sipping your breath economically in parts, you're not human.
Just go and see it.
Currently re-watching 'Edge of Darkness' on DVD. One of the best TV series ever made.

+1, though didn't think much of the second Riddick film.
Proper Star Trek: The episode in which Spock goes on heat and has to be taken back to Vulcan for a shag or he will die. In the event a fight to the death with Kirk sorts him out. Also features T'Pau, who later went on to form a pop band in the 'eighties.
A much better show than 'the Next Generation', much less soul-searching. Losing a few security guards on a mission was par for the course and in no way precluded a bit of banter and piss-taking when safely back on the bridge of the Enterprise after it was all over.

Much better than I expected, in fact a thoroughly good film. The vistas and overall cinematography in particular are excellent, but the acting is uniform and the storyline not too similar to previous films, although there are definite elements of deja vu. HAL2000's eye, anyone? Together with Cloud Atlas, the best looking SF film of the year.

Saturday night the Mrs.and i, fresh from six weeks of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy got the DVD of Smiley's People and did a six hour marathon, finally going to bed at 4:30am. It was bloody fantastic, I don't think the BBC could do anything of that quality these days.

Both series were first class and bare repeated viewing. I'm not sure I agree with your your doubts that the BBC can continue to "do anything of that quality these days". I think they can and will continue to do so. One example I would cite would be be 'Dancing on the Edge', shown early this year.

I have been watching the first and second series of Homeland over the past couple of days and I have to say it has been excellent viewing...
Homeland is really outstanding and gripping viewing.

Fair enough - but I wouldn't dismiss the Beeb yet.
Homeland is really outstanding and gripping viewing.

Last night the Mrs and I, after a day of steamed music for a change, decided to have a bit of escapist hokum and settled on Captain America from Virgin Movies. Having fired up the Home Cinema we sat back to enjoy it. Suddenly all the lights went out and I was struck by the highly realistic sound of running water...... Yes our upstairs neighbour had, for the second time in two months, left his taps on and flooded our flat. The ceiling had only just been re plastered from last time and thankfully had not yet been re painted as it's now falling down again :mad: After that the movie was pretty disjointed what with having to wait for an emergency electrician etc. but it seemed OK

Just started watching Damages on Netflix, rather good surprisingly as I'm not a huge fan of Glenn Close but the plot is drawing me in at the mo - just staring Episode 3.

Netflix is brilliant, a real bargain at £5.99 a month (still on my free month and I have watched the entire Breaking Bad series for nowt!). Not sure about its longevity mind you, as the content for my tastes is a bit MOR, but there's certainly plenty to keep me going for awhile.
Watched this last night and it was pretty crap!!! 2/5 although probably being generous!

I watched the first pilot episode last night on Netflix as I seem to remember Martin (T) saying he highly rated it. I never realised and this has been off my radar completely, with visions of Buck Rogers and Lorne Green in my mind, but do you know what . . . its darned good drama.
There are 76 episodes to watch too in glorious 1080 HD, so I guess I'm going to be busy!

T'is not often one can say a remake betters the original but in this case it is absolutely the case. I've watched every episode and BG is now firmly ensconced at the head of my top ten list of all time favourite sci-fi series, bloody marvellous it is... :)
I liked the original version. I don't think comparisons are valid as the new version is only similar in that it nicks the title, the basic set up and a few character names. Starbuck as a chick? I never really got a handle on that. I still watch the old one on cable when it turns up. Galctica 80 sucked badly though.

Bang on Martin - this is nothing like the original. I liked BG in its day, but for me that time has long gone, as have of lot of things from older era's - great at the time, but a little tired now.
I'm really enjoying this though and I even find myself fancying a blonde (Number Six), which is totally out of character for me :scratch:
