That's a shockingly bad film. Even Robert Shaw can't save it, that's how bad it is. And historically speaking it's just terrible. Pretty much everything is wrong, the vehicles, the uniforms, the events...
There's only one good scene - the bit where Shaw goes to inspect his new unit and is dismayed to find they are a bunch of kids, but they win him over with their National Socialist ardour. They should have got whoever wrote that bit to write the rest of it!

Some German AFVs have since been recovered and restored. When 'A Bridge Too Far' was made there were no working Tiger tanks in existence so they were forced to use a Leopard Mk1, which is just crap but no option. The rest of the film is of a high enough standard that it can be excused.

Just watched 'An Inspector Calls' by J. B. Priestly on the Drama channel. Starring David Thewlis as the "Inspector", with Ken Stott and Miranda Richardson as members of the Birling family.
A superb piece of writing. I've seen the play several times, and on each occasion it has given me food for thought as to the play's 'message' and who exactly is the "inspector" is.
Great play, which has gained more interest of late. One of my fav films, where Sim is fab as the inspector

A friend has been bugging me to watch this so I taped it when it came around again. Not a war film as such as there are no scenes of battle but some very powerful moments. Not a fun film to watch but it is engaging despite, or maybe because of its bleakness.
George Peppard has a great role and plays it very well, probably his best film of the ones I have seen, he made some right rubbish in his time.
Karl Foremans only chance to Direct i think and it wasnt a success alas. Yes its a good film, although too dark for its time i think and why it was a failure... mid 70's early 80, it would have done well. Foreman was witchunted by McCarthyism which didnt do his career any good either... he wrote the script for river kwai and eventually got his oscar.

Dark even for these times! In some ways it reminds me of a Tarantino film, lots of emphasis on the characters and lots of set-up situations that serve to develop the characters rather than the plot. I wonder if he is a fan of it?

Age thing maybe? I was 18 when 'Appetite...' came out, but I'd already seen them on the Jonathan King show a couple of months earlier and liked them. Bought it straight away so I have the version with the banned cover.
Apparently when they were told they had to change the cover because major retailers were refusing to stock it they wanted to change it to a picture of the space shuttle exploding...
Got Kings of Leon first album, not my sort of thing at all. Kasabian? yeah, right.... Oasis first two are good, after that nope. Rock music finished for me after 'What's The Story...' Oasis were the last proper rock stars.

Know what you mean. These days I tend to have 'flirtations' with new bands, or bands that are new to me but my ardour seldom lasts & then popping 'in rock' on the 401 is like slipping on a comfy pair of slippers.

Not sure I agree about the age. My formative years, music-wise were the late '60s, yet the '70 produced so many good acts that the decade's music forms a sizable part of my collection. I was still listening to the music of the '80s, '90s and the '00s, and adding some acts to my collection (Jools Holland's 'Later' and Glastonbury were/are a big help in that regard).
However things for me tailed off significantly in the '10s. Probably my age now, but I find modern acts to be either anodyne, ephemeral or just downright unlistenable. But in matters of taste: De gustibus non disputandem est - suum cuique. ;)
(BTW I do like Oasis's first two discs, but that more of it reminding me of a time and a place. Guns & Roses, Kasabian, Franz Ferdinand never did anything for me either.)

My only complaint is the film's 'bowdlerised' ending, presumably not to upset American sensibilities. The ending in the book is far more powerful and effective.
yeah, you can see why they changed the still born section/breastfeeding etc.. it caused a storm in the book, far less trying to get that passed a censor, and thats not taking into consideration the viewers horror. no, it had to be changed.

I disagree - it's an awful movie, having all the subtlety of the book replaced by over the top melodrama. Sadly only memorable for it being Edward G. Robinson's last film; and even his death scene is cringingly mawkish.
However the way things are going at the moment, the predictions of the book may come to fruition within the next couple of years.

Looks like a romance from the poster but it isn't. I saw this as a youngster when I was off school sick and remembered it being quite intriguing but not much more, so when I saw it was on Talking Pictures channel I thought I'd give it another go 40 years later.
The premise is that a young woman and her brother go to the 1889 World Fair in Paris. They check into a hotel but next morning there's no sign of the brother, what she thought was his room is actually a bathroom, and no-one in the hotel has any recollection or record of him.
It's all pretty well-done, and with good acting. The French people all speak in French with no subtitles, which is pretty daring, but it's only schoolboy level so you can still get the gist of it. Worth a watch when it comes round again.

Have to say if I wanted to watch a film that has some decent baps on display 'Quatermass And The Pit' would not spring immediately to mind.
And the spaceship is depicted as enormous and clearly out in the open with a truck parked next to it.

All the action on the submarine is historically accurate, they had WW2 submarine force vets in to technically advise them. The only thing that is a bit dodgy is the Jap sub shooting a torpedo at them whilst both subs are underwater.

Yes, I looked it up. 8 torpedoes at timed intervals based on a guess of the German's possible course. The U-boat inadvertently turned into the path of one of them.
The film implies that the Japanese sub had sunk three other U.S subs previously. And it only fires one torpedo. With no way to gauge the depth of the target they'd have to get very lucky.
Anyway, still a great film.

Logan's Run was IMO a crap film - not even mitigated by the young females running around bra-less.
I think it has improved with age. Compared to modern scifi films it's pretty good.

I think I have seen it about half a dozen times. It's a flawed film I agree but the concept is an interesting one (everyone is killed when they reach age 30 to control population), the sets are good, and it features Jenny Agutter at the height of her powers. Rotten Tomatoes gives it 62% overall, I'd say that's about right.

I think I watched a couple of episodes.
Peter Nicholls in his book 'Fantastic Cinema' gives 'Logan's Run' two stars out of five, meaning "only watch if it is raining and there is nothing better to do". (or 40%)
The ratings are an average of those of Philip Strick (author of Science Fiction Movies), Tom Milne (reviews fantasy films for Monthly Film Bulletin), Ramsey Campbell (horror novelist and reviews films for Halls of Horror) and Peter Nicholls.
An alternative take on the idea of a 'thanatocracy' is partially explored in the film 'Zardoz'. A film that has too many interesting ideas for its own good, is flawed but (again IMO) is a much better film (though Rotten Tomatoes only gave it 47%! :doh:). Worth watching if only to see Sean Connery running around in a loin cloth (:eek:), and again most of the females are bra-less and wear flimsy diaphanous tops.

Maze Runner 2 - The Scorch Trials (2015)

The first one was a decent bit of 1950s style sci-fi so thought I'd give the next one a go. We find a bit more out about what's going on outside the Maze. There's another one after this so I wasn't expecting much of a conclusion this time but it moves the story on and stays interesting.
Some stupid stuff in it. The baddie is so obviously a baddie it's impossible to believe that of all the maze-surviving 'elite' teenagers only the hero is suspicious of him.
There's the old trick of getting in a physical altercation with a guard in order to steal his I.D pass (which is required to get through the doors). But given the guard needs the pass to get through the doors himself it seems a bit unlikely that he wouldn't notice it was gone.
Nit picking aside it's not a bad watch, will have to look out for the third one when it comes around.

After a bad crash a previously successful NASCAR driver struggles to get his balls back.
Will Ferrell is no Chevy Chase or Bill Murray but the torch of the Saturday Night Live style of film got passed to him at some point so if you like the sort of Caddyshack/Fletch type of film he's really the only game in town these days. Has some funny moments, Gary Cole playing the dysfunctional father steals the show a bit. Worth a watch.

One of my top 10 films now...Little Big Man from 1970. Stars Dustin Hoffman, Chief Dan George, Faye Dunaway, Martin Balsam, Jeff Corey and Richard Mulligan, and directed by Arthur Penn.
A revisionist, anti-establishment Western, it was summed up well by Roger Ebert, of the Chicago Sun-Times, describing Little Big Man as "an endlessly entertaining attempt to spin an epic in the form of a yarn."

It must be over thirty years since I saw that. I remember thinking it was an amazing film.
(Richard Mulligan was the big blond guy who played the constantly bemused husband Burt in the old send-up sitcom 'Soap', in which he was excellent and very funny)
