One of my guilty pleasures...
Watched it in school and loved it, stuck with me as an adult.
The DVD gets an airing quite often.

She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949). directed by John Ford and starring John Wayne, Victor McLaglen and Joanne Dru. Wayne wasnt initially Fords idea of the part until he saw him in Red River. The rest is history. McLaglen as per usual steals most of the scenes.

Of Kings and Prophets - ABC on demand Sky Boxsets.
An odd one this, a sort of Biblical Game of Thrones. I am not sure who this is aimed at, GOT fans, Christians, Jews ? No idea. If you look at it as a dramatisation of the Books of Samuel its somewhat of a miss because there is too much here that isn't in those books, too much secular thinking, taking away from the Biblical.
Taking it as a GOT typed drama, it works mostly, but for me the deviations, additions and David being way older than he should have been circa the early parts of the story is a big detraction. Worth a watch though if you have Sky.
The series has 9, 42 min episodes and has been cancelled.

Well I watched first episode of The Wire.... To say I am not impressed would be putting it mildly! A glance at some reviews though reveals that it's infamous for taking ages to "get in to"... One review reckoned most either give up after the first couple of episodes or go on to find it amazing... little in between. If it wasn't for that I would not bother watching the second episode never mind anything beyond that... Unfathomable plot ("plot" is term I use loosely here as it seemed to be missing one entirely), American street slang as impenetrable as drunk weegies, police talking like "get a 402 on the FGT and put me a RRY in after the 335".... EH!? :scratch:

Yes, I know. It's very "dense" and you feel a bit intimidated by its closed-in intensity at first. My son got me the boxed sets and issued the same caveat, saying I needed to stick with it for the first three episodes, even if I didn't feel like it (some present!). Anyway, I did, and I was glad I did. It opens out into a fantastic drama, with some of the best and most complex characters I remember seeing on screen: Stringer Bell, Omar, Bubbles - terrific, memorable characters in superb performances. Think of it as not so much a police/crime drama, as a portrait of a city (thanks, King Crimson!) - in this case Baltimore, from a different angle in each series. Series 1, from the street; Series 2, from the unionized dockside labourers, Series 3, from the Town Hall, 4 from the schools and 5 from the newspaper media. Don't be tempted to take them out of order, though! Oh, and it helps if you put the subtitles on - pretend you're watching a Scandi-drama.

p.s. I forgot to add: great music! Five different versions of Tom Waits' "Down in the Hole" used as openers and great in-film music background. Magnificent!

The Wire:
Examination of the American law enforcement 'ecosystem'...each series examines a different aspect.
Quality seeps out of it, Shakespearean in scope...genuinely gripping and 'gotta know what happens next' feckin' amazing.
+1 - This is no exaggeration. Worth the investment of effort!

Like £90 fuses it takes a while to burn in ;) (kidding)
beware bias and what you've read.
it IS as good as they say it is, grabbed me from maybe the 3rd episode?
Saw enough from the first half hour to keep me interested though, all about the subtleties!
Having seen all 6 seasons I'll boldly say it's...literature....almost Shakespearean in its scope.
Stick with it, you'll thank yourself in the morning. :)

Re K-19, loved it, actually anything cold war/espionage related, recently finished The Night Manager bbc mini series, after hearing the awards it received, did not do it for me. Bill Nighty in Page 8/Turks & Caicos/Salting The Battlefield in comparison was way way way up there.

Based on Ilya Boyashov's novel about a tank man who despite 90% burns, pulled from a destroyed Russian tank, makes a miraculous recovery, and despite amnesia retains enough ability to be sent back to the front. Not long after returning its clear he isn't entirely normal, and seems to have an ability to read what happened to damaged tanks, and in one case the tank he reads was destroyed by the tank that killed his. The White Tiger.
The film is about the Russians putting a crew together and a modified T34 a T34/85 to destroy this White Tiger. What follows is an excellent film about tank warfare with a weird supernatural aspect. Think Duel meets Fury.

Just about to watch 'A Good Day To Die Harder', not seen it before but I liked the 'previous installments in the franchise', as they say.
The Superbowl.
New England are getting pasted at the moment.
It is an interesting story how American football got started. When the Puritans went to America they had their hands full for a while but after a few years they got settled and found they had no sport. Cricket was suggested but no-one knew how to make a cricket bat. One bloke recalled that at school they had played a game with a much cruder bat that anyone could whittle out of a thick branch. That game was Rounders but, worried about licencing constraints (Puritans are big worriers), they decided to call it 'Base Ball' and pretend it was something different entirely.
So that was the summer sorted but what about the winter? Now in any civilised country this would be devoted to Association Football. Problem was this was before the FA had been invented and football was just a piss-up and a fight between two villages on Shrove Tuesday. And the Puritans had come to America to get away from all that drunken rowdiness. So that was out.
Luckily Rugby had already been invented, by bizarre coincidence, at Rugby School. So they decided to play that but no-one had thought to bring a rule book with them so they had to work from their memories, which were a bit dim and distant by that point. There was a big argument about whether or not you were allowed to pass forward, The people who said 'Of course you can! What would be the point of only passing backwards?' won and so the game of American Football was born.
Those who lost went north and started Canada. They gave up on Rugby but someone had a rule book for hockey and so that's how that got started.
Just a bit of history for you there.

I thought that I vaguely recalled watching it, which is wrong as I just checked and it was on from 1988 to 1990 and I didn't have a telly back then. Unless it was repeated in the early 1990s.
In other news I have run out of the Bilko episodes I taped from Forces TV and they have stopped showing it :(

Cloverfield is really very good, first time I saw it I had no idea what it was about and was about to switch off ten minutes in, but then stuff starts happening. One of those films that is worth more than one watch IMO. It's really well done.

They are excellent. Great cast and acting too.
I watch those sometimes. They are okay but not great. Pretty much like the books. Shame they can't do the Flashman books. I still hold out hope of seeing a decent film or tv show made from them.

In many ways i agree. But Americans are not really interested in anything non American. They would have to make him a Yank and then the whole thing would be re written and screwed up. They made one once but it didnt work, so maybe best kept as books of joy. Ive got them all, and again most on audio cds that i listen too when in car. Much more enjoyable than music. Folk must think me nuts driving down rd laughing all the time

True. Not sure its really the type of thing that converts to film well. Too much in it, and getting an actor that could pull it off even harder. Plus the racism and sexism would be an off put to both actors and studios i think. They got away with it in likes of Roots as the whites lost etc. Fladhy always comes out on top lol.

The actual events are fairly historically accurate and there are a lot of strong female and ethnic characters in all the stories. Not saying it would be easy, but I watch so many films that cost $100 million and think why did they bother making a film of that crap when there are these great stories lying unused?

Its a found footage film Grant. High production values and if you love giant monster smashing cities films then I think you will like this. If you hate that sort of thing then not for you. I liked this a lot. The early bits when New York comes under attack, but from what is chilling stuff. Shades of 9/11, the fear and terror palpable, but when its clear it some giant creature... it becomes surreal.

Surprising how many folk say that. Its mostly as they are used to the original characters so much that its all so wrong to them. I was a bit that way first view tbh. But gave it another 2 views and glad i did as when you get over the change, its actually very well done

Obviously it invites comparison with the original.... and it compares very poorly IMO. The original was just so perfect that it was foolish to even attempt this!
Try "Godfrey's cottage" for a really good episode of the original;)
It was in my film of the year top 5. I didnt order them.. it just needs the ability to draw a line under the old characters. Tbh its better acted than the old ones.. just that we got used to them when young. I grew up with them and have all of it including the film so not anti in any way the original.

Was OK but let down by a poor script methinks! Shame as the cast are awesome in their own right. Bill Nighy a bit more raunchy than Le Mesurier, and Pike has reached puberty in the remake!:)
A matter of life and death (1946) A Powell & Pressburger classic this, and one of my all-time favorites. Stars David Niven and the lovely Kim Hunter. Also stars Roger Livesey, Raymond Massey and Marius Goring. It was released in the US as Stairway to Heaven.

Honour for British Films
First Royal Film performance ever to take place will be on Friday, November 1, at the Empire, Leicester square, in the presence of the King and Queen and the Princesses.
It will be in aid of the Cinematograph Trade Benevolent Fund.
This will be an historic event. For many years the stage and music hall have been honoured by Royal Command performances.
Now the cinema receives equal recognition.
As can be understood it was no easy task to choose a film for this occasion.
A special viewing committee representing all sides of the industry saw all the films submitted by British and American producers.
They were considered not only for their intrinsic merits but also in view of their suitability for this particular occasion.
Finally, the entrants were narrowed down to three.
These were Metro's The Green Years, which had very strong claims because of the nature of the story and its many British associations.
The Magic Bow, a story of Paganini with Stewart Granger and Phyllis Calvert in the leading parts, and Yehudi Menuhin responsible for the violin playing.
And A Matter of Life and Death, the Michael Powell - Emeric Pressburger picture starring David Niven, Raymond Massey, Roger Livesey, and Kim Hunter.
After much careful consideration, the Viewing Committee decided on "A Matter of Life and Death".
This is an honour to British films of which we can be justly proud.
We don't mean to suggest that we can beat the Big Drum and crow about scoring over Hollywood.
Far from it. We can be modestly happy that we are producing pictures which are worthy of a Royal Command performance.

Main film now.. "Once Upon a Time in the West" (1968) Directed by Sergio Leone. Henry Fonda, Charles Bronson, Claudia Cardinale and Jason Robards. Very few cases of the remake being better than the original, for me, anyway. I prefer the remake of 'Cape Fear', prefer the Brando 'Mutiny On The Bounty' to the Laughton effort.
Sometimes they have their own merits. The Donald Sutherland version of 'Invasion Of The Body Snatchers' for example. But it's rare.

I dont watch this now, but manhunter was better.. similar to the first terminator film when Arnie was the baddie...much better :) Thats not to say SoL is bad, coz its a very good film. The best of the ones he did

Yes, I agree... He was superb in it. Maybe "The Taking of Pelham 1,2,3 as well... I know many dont like Hopscotch but I love that one as well. Not a great film but a dirty secret:D

Manhunter is grittier than Silence of The Lambs and there's no overacting in it.

You are a fan of Thin Red Line? I suppose there had to be one somewhere. ;) It's okay, don't get me wrong, but it's no 'A Bridge Too Far' which, let's face it, has always been the one to beat.
I have a soft spot for Mel, he's done some good films for a drunken anti-Semite with absolutely no knowledge of history apart from what he's read on the back of cereal boxes. He's a nut. Southpark are not far of the ball with him IMO

Tonight its my Cinema reserve 2 disc version of Tora, Tora, Tora. (1970) Martin Balsam, Sô Yamamura, Jason Robards, Tatsuya Mihashi, E.G. Marshall, Takahiro Tamura and James Whitmore. Directed by Richard Fleischer, less the Japanese sections.

Tora! Tora! Tora! traces the build-up to Pearl Harbor by examining the events and developments on both sides. The film is even-handed, telling both sides' stories. By switching seamlessly, the Japanese and American versions are both very easy to feel. it is fairly well done i have to say and is still one of my fav war films, all the more so as no "real" stars were used.
Picture quality is very good for a 70s film into dvd, and the steel box packaging beautiful.

Legion (Fox) Watching on catch up.
Weird, surreal not an easy watch. Legion is about Legion (David Haller) estranged son of Charles Xavier (Professor X), and David is one of the most powerful and dangerous mutants in the universe the X Men exist in. Only problem is Legion's grasp of reality is seriously warped and we watch this series through his warped mind's view. Frankly this makes it hard for us to know what is reality and what is part of his delusional craziness.
Interesting series so far.
Last night it was Neil Simon's California Suite (1978) Starred Alan Alda, Jane fonda, Walter Matteau, Elaine May, Michael caine, Maggie Smith(who wone an Oscar), Bill Cosby and Richard pryor that I remember. Excellent writing and acting that holds the attention but somehow just misses being great.

Super fim in my view and although the 1978 film of same name starring Warren beatty is quirkey and good too, it is actually a remake of "here comes mr jordan"(1941), and I prefer this.

Some cooking show, not really watching it, just came on after 'University Challenge'.
You never see the aftermath in these cooking shows. I mean she is only cooking bacon eggs and potato and she has used about 5 plates half a dozen bowl and 2 tea-towels. She wants to drain the water out the chopped potato so she puts it in a tea towel and squeezes it out into a clean bowl! Why not just do it over the sink FFS?
You can tell it isn't her doing the washing-up. She's off to the bar as soon as they say cut and some poor bastard is left with cleaning up the bloody shambles she's created.

LOL I got all my favourite films on DVD, Amazon Prime, cable with all the channels. But I sort of miss having that really limited choice of 3 channels. In those days I'd end up watching something intellectual on BBC2 - James Burke or Horizon or similar - purely because there was nothing else on and nothing else to do.
Now I can just watch Fresh Prince Of Bel Air, or Bilko, or Space 1999 at the flick of a remote. If that had been the case back then the smarty pants bollox would have stood no chance. And I wouldn't still love those other shows so much either.
What I'm saying is that the rationing sort of made those shows better, enhanced them. And that I would be dumber than I am without it.
You can replicate it by watching BBC4 all evening, just watch what they throw at you. But it isn't the same.
i rarely watch actual tv.. Ive stuff on prime and my digital library. Then my big dvd library too. When tv watching it tends to be yesterday. I occasionally copy a film to watch later from a film channel like film 4 or Sony now.

Love these British films from this era as it is from the world as I grew up in. Everything was a bit old and worn but it all had character and a shabby charm. I like to watch what is going on in the background in the location scenes, all the old shops and cars and that.
You look at London in this film, what a difference. In comparison it looks like Disneyland now.

Excellent film. Its a difficult subject in general, and covering so much ground its difficult to fit into a film. It may have been better to end it just after the war, but in many ways the short second section is the more important, and damning of American policies, which basically went on til the 60's.. some say they still exist...
one of those films that no doubt pleases no-one who has a side, but should really emphasise how racist much of America was

Couple of films tonight as its Friday night at the movies. First up is the golden oldie musical comedy Paint Your Wagon from 1969 and stars Lee Marin, Clint Eastwood and the lovely Jean Seburg.

'Mean Streets' (a week or so back, via the iPlayer). Robert de Niro chewing the scenery, and a more understated performance by Harvey Keitel. Lots of Italian-Americans shouting at each other.

Missing John Wayne in the title role, although Bridges does a decent if unremarkable job. Otherwise I enjoyed it. Not a huge fan of Cohen Bros but I like Big Lebowski and Fargo. Beautiful looking film and the girl who plays the feisty bird is very good. Sticks very close to the plot of the original, some of the dialogue is identical too. Great ending, different to the old one. Well worth a watch.

A middle-brow Japanese action series based on the tale of the blind masseur who beneath his bumbling accident-prone facade is master of swordsmanship, sumo wrestling, and archery. Unlike his opponents he favours a cane sword rather than the usual katana. The films are largely formulaic and usually involve the principal character Zatoichi [played to perfection by Shinataro Katsu] agreeing to carry out the last wish of a dying man or woman which inevitably ends up embroiling him in trouble with corrupt officials, cruel magistrates, and oppressive yakuza bosses and their henchmen. Despite his blindness, low social status, stocky build, and appalling table manners he is a hit with the ladies everywhere he goes. An eternal wanderer and outcast, sentimental, but also capable of visiting devastating violence on those who take him on . A sort of Zen Robin Hood righting wrongs in favour of the poor and oppressed. On his travels he teams up with some famous figures from Japanese and Asian cinema such as Yojimbo and The One Armed Swordsman. The earlier films are fairly humerous and light, but as the series progresses the features become somewhat darker in tone. Overall great fun.
Just finished 12 Angry Men (1957) . superb film, with a stellar cast. Forgot how powerful the acting was . not seen it for quite a few years or it felt that way.

That does sound really good. A lot of Japanese stuff is hard to appreciate unless you get their weird sense of humour. I guess they probably say that about the British.
Predator (1987) stars Arnold Schwarzeneggar, Jesse Ventura and Carl Weathers. Directed by John McTiernan, this is a testosterone induced and very good SiFi film..Plenty action, and not much dialogue;)

good start to evening; now for an older naval battle... Battle of the River Plate (1956) stars John Gregson, Anthony Quayle and Peter Finch, and directed by that immense team of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger.

I also have quite a few with Flixster as dig versions of dvds, mostly from my sons collection. Along with my dvd collection I can usually find something to watch

'Brewster's Millions' (1985) Richard Prior & John Candy, Walter Huston directs. That can't go wrong. And it doesn't. Always worth a watch. Followed by
'School Of Rock' (2003) Seen this a few times, another comedy that isn't high brow or anything but still good enough to be worth watching again.

Quite enjoyed it Barry. It is just well done across the board.... Just tried to watch 12 years a slave, but found it pretty much unwatchable. Not sure why folk make films in this way .... ah well you occasionally lose one now and then.

In what way did you find it unwatchable? The subject is certainly difficult viewing, but IMO it covers an appalling piece of history of which we should be constantly reminded.

Yes, the original one was good, but I lost interest in the remake and only watched two out of the three parts.

Excellent movie just beginning on BBC1. 'Jagged Edge'. Thriller with Glenn Close and Jeff Bridges. Very well worth a look!

An excellent apocalyptic film with a tight cast, quality acting and very good special effects when and where needed.
Yes its sort of a zombie film, but not in the traditional sense these creatures move rapidly and are different.

Completely different tactics required with fast zombies compared to their slower brethren. I mean the Frankenstein was scary, but so slow it was never that stressful. In general your slow zombie apocalypse is infinitely preferable to the fast version. If zombie films have taught us anything it is that one problem with the slow type is that it makes you complacent and/or over confident and then the zombies have you by surprise or when you are cocking about in a totally inappropriate way for the situation.
Fast is just a nightmare especially if the requirement for a head shot to put them down is in play. I recommend heavy calibre weapons and lots of ammo. Can't stress the ammo thing enough.

I don't want to reveal much, because if I do I will ruin the film, but it was an out of the blue, never heard of it film and I enjoyed it a lot. Spanish film but with English speaking actors. Every soften this smart TV's You Tube app recommends a great film/or item to watch. This makes up for all the crazy, tin foil hat wearing madness that gets recommended way too often.
Now watching Take Shelter 2011 film which is another recommendation on You Tube looking very good so far, quality acting and a story about a man that is suffering from visions that seem to be pointing to a disaster coming. Thing is, is that the case or is he going mad.

Another You Tube recommended film, via the smart TV app. Weird film set 17 years after a climate disaster, brought on by man trying to fix climate change. Highly improbable, but if you suspend disbelief and accept this reality, what we have is a film that paints a horrific and surreal existence for the remnants of humanity. Terry Gilliam's Brazil comes to mind but Snowpiercer is a much nastier and brutal film.
Definitely worth a watch.

Watching my blu ray copy. Excellent film this, and been described as a kind of "The African Queen" gone west. Neither Siegal or Eastwood got on with MacLaine, calling her a hard bitch or something like that lol

Superb WWII thriller about the only German POW to escape and make it back to Germany.
Incredible story, strong performances - including loads of classic British character actors - and a few dodgy model shots that really look shoddy in HD. The opening scene with the 109 crashing is hilarious :D
Well worth a watch if you like tense war movies.

Yeah, I looked up the story after watching it - bonkers, eh ??
It took him the best part of a year to trek halfway round the globe to get back to the fatherland, only to have an engine failure in his 109 on a routine patrol over The Channel a few short months after resuming duties with the Luftwaffe.
One thing that niggled at me was the intimation that he might be turned by the British authorities.
The interrogating officer said he said the usual things about the Reich but didn't believe a word of it and was only out for himself.
Would've been interesting if he had been a double agent, especially given his own version as a Dutchman.

Tis yes. Just re read the book which is excellent too; in fact as per, its better. This is from my Apple tv box library. Its a decent size now with about 35 titles now. not as much as my Amazon one though. Ive run out of room for dvd's tbh
