It's the start of the Great British Summer:
The temperature today is starting out around 15C. Clear skys at the moment, but will cloud over mid-morning with a 10% chance of rain all day. The temperature will creep up to about 22C mid-afternoon and then fall. It is forecast to rain heavily overnight.
Tomorrow is forecast to be distinctly colder, and wet, wet, wet, with thunderstorms in the afternoon! :(
At 06:00 this morning, my car showed the external temperature at 13.5C.
It is currently up to a heady 16C with a forecast of 27C and a high UV warning.
dry right now but we're about to start 17 hours of continual rain.

The car showed 33C exterior temperature, but it had been sat in the sun for a while.
It soon dropped to 27 when I started driving.
Forecast for tomorrow is 22C, Wednesday 24C and Thursday 17C with a 65% chance of rain. :eek:
It reached 23C here today, but the 10% chance of rain forecast did not materialise. So I was able to do some essential shopping, and some gardening, as strong rain with some thunder is forecast for tomorrow.
Wasn't a bad day in the end, a couple of very brief showers and still warm, mid twenties. That said, BBC reckons 100% chance of rain overnight and thunder in the early hours - the price we always pay for a hot spell!

At last, we have had some rain, around an inch as indicated by my very accurate bird bath. Our first proper rain in 2 months or more.
There's something comforting about the rain. Don't get me wrong I like dry, sunny weather. I wish we got more of it, but it doesn't feel normal.
We have had some rain here as well. A bit more than drizzle as forecast, more of a short downpour.
It is now feeling very cool. I am almost upset it stopped quickly, as a bit morevrain would keep the dust down.
15C at the moment and dry. Only expected to reach 18C around midday, along with some rain.
The thunderstorms that were forecast for yesterday didn't materialise: maybe they will happen today.

Dull here, another day of sunny showers predicted although yesterday was more showers than sun.
Temperature now dropped below 20C in my living room.

A mate's just phoned to tell me his new butty van is up and running, if I want to go over for a brew (Yorkshire tea!) and a barm. But standing out in that with the sideways rain soaking my bacon butty and refilling my brew isn't my idea of fun even if it is for free.

How can it be 1300 already? Not even had second breakfast yet and now it's dinnertime.
That's the trouble with these dull mornings, it means I sleep in. Really need those extra couple of hours in the morning just to get established.
Looks like it's stopped raining for the moment so will make a run for the supermarket.
I tend to wake up around 05:30, groan, go for a pee and go back to bed. Come 07:00 I wake up again, give my partner a wake up call (she is in Africa at the moment) and then post here about the weather.
Talking of which, the weather for the last couple of days has not been as bad as forecast, but tomorrow may be bad.

He would have. Though when the inevitable barney with his wife kicks off and they start chucking stuff, I'd rather not be in the middle of it :doh: Truth be told I had somewhere else I needed to be. I'll go over there Saturday morning.

Looks like my brother timed it right, returning from his gaff in Cap d'Agde yesterday. Though it's just as bad here today. Forecast to be very windy later too.

:D I know he has been there on occasion. Me and Anita visited it once too, in the evening. I had previously thought well, they want to go back to nature, nowt wrong with that... but there was nothing "back to nature" about the place at night :eyebrows: Lots of chains and leather going on. Not really my scene man :)
It's been a bit of a mix, at times lovely and sunny, then a short, sharp shower - then back to sunny. Thunderstorm just started, only the thunder and lightning so far but the dark grey clouds look like I should expect a deluge!

I don't understand what is happening with the weather here. It was forecast to rain, more or less, all day, with thunderstorms at times.
Everytime the sky has looked dark with storm clouds, they just blow over without effect, only to be replaced by blue skies.
It rained here, as forecast. It is still drizzling now, but should stop soon.

This weather is doing my head in. Can't plan anything. Supposed to be raining, but sunny right now. If I committed to anything outdoorsy the rain will come, sure as eggs is eggs :(
It's ok at the moment, sunny spells and dry, but rain expected later and yes, tomorrow is looking like a washout down here, too.
I have 800kg of road planings being delivered today for running repairs to the track, looks like I will be doing that job tomorrow in the wet! (Sunday is supposed to be dry at the moment, so maybe I will kick the can down the road until then...)
Nothing but rain predicted by the BBC for the next 2 weeks. The price we pay I suppose for a dry April/May.
No rain forecast here until 1500 and even then it's only a 30 percent chance. We usually have similar weather so I'd say go for it. Whatever it is.

Rather you than me, dealing with them tonne bags is proper graft. This I know from experience. Make sure your man dumps the bag exactly where you need it, then take a stanley knife to the bag. I had two delivered last year, dumped on the drive. Anita wanted to save the bags, so I had to shovel them out into a barrow :eek: I won't be doing that again any time soon.

That's good advice, thank you! If he puts it exactly where I want it we should still be able to drive around it, if not, the job will have to be done immediately!
I was planning on saving the bag, but I may just go with the knife option and a rake!

Just over a week ago it was almost unbearably hot and no rain for months. Today we have lights on and considering putting on the heating. Never satisfied !!!
Managed to walk the dog in the drizzle, made the mistake of wearing shorts to find out it’s only 13c. Now proper rain, and still cold! Tomorrow is looking better for doing the track, dry and 21c, not too sunny.

Rain has stopped but it's very overcast and cold. Time to put the heating on I think.
Went out, not that warm but at least it isn't wind and rain.
It has rained here today, but not to the extent that was forecast. Went out to do some essential shopping when it was dry, as the weather tomorrow is forecast to be even worse. We shall see!

The smell of rain on asphalt is unique to the UK. Well that was what I was told by a colleague at work who had spent many years in the Navy. Not sure if I believe him, but I do like the smell of freshly fallen rain.
Not had a drop here all day. We're due tomorrow though.

Went out anyway only because I had to. Sun was out but it's making a really half-arsed effort. Plus it's really windy.

I've given up trying to understand our weather. Today it said it would rain in the late morning, it didn't. Then it said there would be thunderstorms in the afternoon, there weren't. Now it says it will rain tomorrow morning and again Thursday morning. I give up!
Because of the inaccurate forecast, I have spent all day indoors - putting up shelves.
We shall see what happens tomorrow.

12c and mainly dry, which was good as we were at the grandson’s school sports day.
Still waiting for the rain - according to my phone it's raining with thunderstorms now, but looking out of the window there is a bright blue-sky with just a few tiny cumulus clouds. :doh:
I shouldn't complain, but when I read the local forecast and make a decision based on it, it's very annoying to have to stay indoors so as to risk not getting drenched if I go out.
Been off and on here all day but not heavy, just spitting and drizzle.
That's the thing about rain in most other countries, either it rains or it doesn't and when it does it's usually short and spectacular. Whereas here it's mostly just a semi-continual, low-level harassment.
At long last, It has now started to rain here and will probably continue until the end of the day.

Forecast for the weekend now has revised temperatures, not as warm as previously predicted. Only 21C for Saturday now, yesterday it was giving 24C.

Dry overnight, then rain started at 6.30, and isn't stopping. Just taken delivery from a soggy-looking Morrisons bloke. I wouldn't want his job.
Fine rain falling at the moment. 13C and not expected to reach much more.
Hope it eases off sometime today as I need to go out and buy some groceries. I could always drive to the shops, but since they are only half a mile away it always seems to me to be a waste of petrol, unless absolutely necessary.
There's always the hat and raincoat option.

We mostly go for the stop at home and await delivery option.

I fancied a steak last night so did idly consider walking over to the Aldi today. But it's proper miserable out there and you have to go over the hill which is pretty exposed. Might try for it tomorrow. Sainsbury ask crazy money for theirs and they're no better.

We do that. Go in for a couple of items, get tempted and come out with a trolley full. That's why you should go shopping with a full stomach.
Been raining heavily all day so far.
What annoys me is those people who have already loaded up the conveyor belt at the checkout, then realise they have forgotten something, leave their shopping to go and find the item. They say "I'll only be a moment" but it is always much longer!
Typical winter's day, cold and wet. Very wet.

Aldi do the same you get in there and the £3.30 steaks are just a sliver of beef. £5.50 for what I'd actually call a 'steak' although you still wouldn't get away with it in America. Not even at Tony Roma's.

I suppose so. Probably the reason for steaks not being included on the "things it will cook" list is down to its size - it wasn'r big enough to do both our steaks. Fortunately we both like medium rare, which I'd estimate took it three or four minutes, helped by it doing both sides at once.
Sounds about right, you can always check by using a steak fork. I like my steak a point, that is somewhere between bleu or rare and medium rare. But if in doubt, it is preferable IMO to have it overcooked than undercooked.

Yup, agree with that Martin. I got taught how to cook steaks by a professional chef, 3 pointers he gave me, correct seasoning at least an hour before cooking, searing high heat to caramelise the crust and proper resting time. But tastes vary so not everyone might want it that way. For me, after years of cocking up my steaks I can now make good ones.

Rain started at 9am, stopped at 10am, and it's been sunny since. Only 16C, but quite pleasant in the sunshine. With that wind it's great drying weather, but as soon as you put washing out you just know the rain will return.
Every time I check the forecast for the week ahead it's different. Sunny days become rainy, rainy become sunny, temperatures change by 5C or more.
I don't think they've got any real idea what it's going to do.
Was watching 'The Longest Day' yesterday and there's a bit where they have to decide whether to go or not and the meteorologist bloke says 'Well, it's winter weather and there's fog over the landing beaches.' And that's June 5th.
13C with a clear and sunny blue sky. Expected to reach 19C later today, and with no chance of rain. Time to get out and cut the grass, and wash the car. :)

17c and cloudy, feels warmer for some reason. Still nice enough to do the BBQ I am planning for tea, and even if it wasn’t, I’m British, so if I’ve planned a BBQ, we’re having a BBQ.
(I was going to say something about acid rain adds to the flavour - is acid rain even a thing anymore? I was petrified I was going to get all my skin burnt off in the early 80’s if I went out in it…)

Or those South Africans I rented a house to where they built a massive brick BBQ pit on the patio and cooked all their meals out there all year round. Had the meat flown in from SA because they thought ours was rubbish.

One of the few animals I don't think I have eaten. Mind you I haven't been to South Africa, but I'm sure they have them in Zimbabwe, a country which I have visited - so maybe I have eaten springbok after all. :scratch:

No idea what they were paying it wasn't my house. I just used to find tenants for a mate who had loads of houses to rent.

No doubt some springboks will have gotten into Zimbabwe - that's the thing with those wild animals, no respecters of borders. I reckon they'll be like venison.
Fun fact: Springbok can jump as high as 11.5 ft, a behaviour unique to them, known as 'pronking', done to show predators that chasing them is more trouble than it's worth, or to warn fellow herd members.

I managed to cut the front hedge - the one that was getting a bit out of control and accosting pedestrians, which is no good so had to have a good trim. Managed to do the front grass but the back will have to wait. Also cleaned the Land Rover inside and out as I have “volunteered” to take a friend’s daughter to her prom in it on Friday. Getting paid with a takeaway so not all hard graft.

I'll make a couple of guesses - are you opening Essex's newest campsite, and how do I book a pitch for 18th July? Or starting up a crown green bowling club? I know you've mentioned before that your lawn is acreage-ly challenged, which would rule out golf course. Maybe pitch & putt?

Michaela was always pretty. Though in her younger years she was quite underweight. That was down to the anorexia. Still looks great, especially considering she's had a few health issues to deal with.

Got this at Worden Park Leyland, near us. Now that's miniature! It's about 500 yards long, and there's also a longer track (900 yds) with bigger trains. Open Sundays and bank holidays.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, I doubt that Bomber Command are depending on the accuracy of your forecast :)

Nowt in Colwyn Bay it was just somewhere you went through on the way to Llandudno. Doesn't even have a sandy beach, all stones.
That railway was about it. There was the 'Hotel 70 Degrees' on the cliff top. We used to ask if we could stay there next time since it looked really flash but my father would mutter something about not being made of money.
70 degrees was nothing to do with the temperature (70F would probably be a record for North Wales), it was the angles designed into the construction. No idea if that's still there, it was facing demolition back in 2006 according to this BBC report so I'd guess not.

My only interest in Colwyn Bay was with two very good second-hand bookshops, one of which also sold used vinyl and CDs. I would visit Colwyn Bay with a, sadly departed, friend of mine, who I met in London in the mid-eighties. We had similar tastes in music and both loved books.
He moved back to North Wales to help look after his ailing father, and I would visit him in Conwy a couple of times a year. He died a couple of years ago and left me his entire CD collection: some 3,500 discs!
The only other highlight on that coast road was the Little Chef at Flint. We'd always ask if we could stop there but we'd get the same response about money.
Some years back now, I went to Snowdon with friends. On the return drive I insisted we eat there although I had to offer to pay for everyone in order to get consent. But ambition realised!
Not too soon either since the last Little Chef closed in 2018. It wasn't bad, actually, although (and it wasn't helped by people ordering extravagantly on my tab) it would have been cheaper to go to a Michelin 5 star so my father was right about that.

Well that is a worthy claim, Kilimanjaro is high enough to cause altitude sickness before you're halfway up, though you're not likely to feel it until the next day.
You do suffer from altitude sickness, as you say, from roughly half way up. I did, but if the symptoms persist, such as headaches, then you have to turn back and descend. Fortunately I quickly got over it and continued the climb.
The secret is to walk slowly: "polé, polé" as they say in Swahili. On our way up we were overtaken by a bunch of rufty-tufty Swedes who were not going polé polé. We let them carry on, only to meet them again a few hours later coming back. They obviously couldn't get over their altitude sickness symptoms and were advised to abandon the climb.
That's the strange thing about altitude sickness, it does not depend on how strong or fit you are, it will either affect you badly or it won't.

We discovered a wasps' nest at the side of the house yesterday, somewhere behind an air brick, so it'll be under the floor in that corner. These nests have been a thorn in my side for years now.
They're the Iran of the insect world. They've effectively closed off that route to the front garden. So I have no choice but to loudly threaten them, blast the area with nest destroyer foam as I did last night (with limited effectiveness), then in the autumn when they all die off, declare a victory :)

My sympathies Steve. The only pest problem I have is with ants that have a nest near the backdoor in the kitchen. When I saw some ants scouting about looking for food, I used to put down some Nippon gel for them to to take back to the nest. That used to be sufficient, but just recently, whilst brushing the doorstep, dozens of ants appeared so I dusted the area with Nippon powder. That did the trick.
Were it me, I would get a professional in to clear the wasps nest. Nasty little buggers: they, unlike bees, will sting without compulsion.

It is hot here, and getting hotter. 38 degrees at the moment, dropping to 22 during the night.
I will be heading to the pool shortly to go and cool off.
The house is a bit hot, as we had my daughters birthday party yesterday with about 20 kids at the house, so the house was open to the heat. I am struggling to cool it down at at the moment.
If it keeps getting hot like this, I may fit an aircon unit in the open plan living area downstairs.
41 forecast tomorrow. The school will be shutting in the afternoon because of the heat on Monday and Tuesday (they have no aircon) due to a departmental decision.
The thing that concerns me the most is the storm that will follow this hot weather.

Back when I was young our family would sometimes go on holiday for a couple of weeks in the south of France. Due to the heat I disliked the nights and apart from breakfast time the days weren't much cop either.
It seems that at home we're now in that situation for several weeks each year. Any sleep that I achieved last night took place in at least 50 separate instalments of a couple of minutes each. I just don't get it when people say 'lovely weather'.
Banging thunderstorm early this morning though. If ever you wanted to experience real bass, that was it!
Move up north, we still have the old-style crap weather all year round. :)

You have my sympathy. It was bad enough on Monday when me and Macca were in your part of the world, and my phone's screen displayed an 'overheating' warning, effectively disabling the sat nav temporarily. You'll be getting it much worse today.

We have a neighbour who's French and she educated us on keeping windows/blinds closed during the day and then opening everything up in the evening. Seemed counterintuitive at first but given the typical construction of British houses (insulated) it works well for us.

Good morning Alistair, I could say we're all cool up here, cool as the Fonz, but that wouldn't be true. You're probably better off where you are, even in 40C heat, because of one important thing, window shutters. We can close the blinds and the curtains with limited success, but what's needed is something to block the sun from hitting the window glass.
Only relief from the heat yesterday was a brief trip to Asda, where I spent longer than I needed to in the frozen food aisles. Did get a good deal on Pukka pies though. Two family size (me and Anita) for a fiver! You could try to find some over there, but they'll probably be called Le Pukka.
Oh and as for your holiday cottage's system not being as good as yours, that's fine, we all need a reason to return home :)
If you can eat a Pukka Pie you'll never have to prove your courage in any other way.

A logistical nightmare Alex. There is not enough room in the house for both pairs of speakers. The 'old' ones need selling to make space, and I need to move them away from their position to take proper photos. And I don't even have the energy to do that. Maybe later today.
Then there's moving the new ones from the van into the house (three man job to be safe). The boxes are huge! and fifty-odd kilos each. And I don't know where I'm gonna store the boxes. I really shouldn't chuck them away, but they're too big to go through the loft hatch... so they're still in the van :doh:

Anyway, the temp out there is way outside my comfort zone. I've just given the grass a long overdue mow, did it in three parts, with two cold drink in the shade breaks. Handy tip - next time buy two lighters, you know it makes sense :) Or if you go online, you can probably find a site selling fire damaged Zippo lighters - every time I see a Hollywood film where someone sets fire to something, it's always a Zippo they chuck in there. Maybe they're a lot cheaper in America.

Lighter is only ten bob from 'Bargain Buys' and one lasts me about a month or so, so the cost is negligible.
They're the good ones too, push button light in any wind jobs.

24C in here right now, not really changed since noon. Humidity down to 69 percent now since I had the window open for a bit but there's too much traffic this time of day to have it open. 22°C now and expected to reach 28 - 29°C this afternoon. Humidity will be around the low to mid 50% mark for most of the day, but rising to 81% later this evening.
Thunderstorms possible tonight - so I had better cut the grass today!
Yesterday was unbearable, today should be be a little more comfortable.,
Just about managed 30C yesterday, currently 21C.
Had the doors and windows all open from 0600 which let out a lot of the heat that built up yesterday.
23.7 indoors now which is about the minimum I am comfortable in a t shirt. Any cooler I will have to put a fleece on :)
No thunderstorms for us but we might get some rain tomorrow.
Big drop off in temperature forecast from Saturday onwards. Like 10C cooler.

I'd intended to cut the grass first thing yesterday, I thought the temperature would be more bearable and there shouldn't be any dew to contend with. I was wrong, grass was soaking wet. So did the job in the afternoon. that was torture. Left it till 9pm to do the back garden.
So all done now :) Just as well, today looks like it will be even hotter. Just been sat out there to have my morning posh coffee and to admire my handiwork, while the cat came over and did her bit to keep the grass "watered".

I should have done it yesterday, but having gone out to do some essential shopping in the village, I felt I had done enough and just wanted to kick back and listen to some music.
The hot weather is now affecting my smartphone: not for making calls, that still works; but using Google (for posting here) which when you click on the icon will disappear after half a second. :doh:
Another interesting, if annoying, consequence of the hot weather is the co-channel interference on my portable FM radio. It all comes down the 'capture ratio': if ther are two stations transmitting on the same frequency, the stronger of the two will be captured. The capture ratio is usually 1dB or less, so with hot weather there can be atmospheric ducting of a foreign station which may at times be a little stronger than the local station and so is captured.
Today whilst listening to LBC, there was a Spanish station received which was of a similar, but varying, strength. this meant that at one time I was listening to LBC, then a few seconds later I was hearing the Spanish station, then back to LBC and so on ... !
Changing to my Quad FM4 tuner, which is fed by an external FM aerial, solved the problem. :)

All the problems with Google on my smartphone, and with co-channel interference on the portable radio now cleared. Will be interesting to see if they re-occur tomorrow.
Cut the grass and did some weeding, so that's enough of the outside for now. Back inside and playing some music. :)

The problem is that I have managed to cool my mancave down to 28°C.
This hot weather stops me enjoying my system. It was 31°C in there yesterday evening.
It is only supposed to reach 36°C today, cooling down next week.
Got to 29C yesterday so a couple of degrees lower than the forecast. Big thunderstorm and torrential rain in the night which has freshened things up a bit. Currently 22C forecast says will reach 30C but this is the last day of it.
25c currently, a bit hazy but expected to clear and hit 35c. No office air conditioning today.
