August already! Me dad's birthday today, 86 or 87, something like that. I might send him a text later - birthdays haven't been much of a thing since he buggered off when I was about nine. Maybe I should make more of an effort, I know he won't.
Another grey day, no weather to speak of.

we've had a bit of rain, surprisingly just after I got back from my walk instead of during it.
Looks bright out again now but I'm in for the rest of the day. Got steak for tea as well. Discovered a short cut to the Aldi, through the fields. Not a bad walk although it's a bit up and down dale.

I'm hoping for nice weather tomorrow so I can get out on the bike - Anita's lad is (finally) moving into his own place this weekend, so I need to be somewhere else as much as is possible without making it too obvious.
It's a solid 22c here as I had air conditioning installed.
Have tickets for the cricket this weekend, so expecting wet and windy.

Started raining in the night, and still is. Oh well, there's nowhere I need to be. Must have been a bit knackered last night, I've gone and left the stereo all switched on :doh: So everything nicely warmed up, might as well make use of it :)

The lane through the fields is paved, I'm not sure what with, some sort of rubbery stuff. It's quite pleasant to walk on.

Yes - last night I had lamb hot pot. The steaks are rump, usually about £3.80 each. Really good, better than the Sainsbury ones which are almost twice the price.

Saw an advert last night for Aldi Sirloin steaks, they looked really good. Might have to pay them a visit. Not today though, Sunday is traditional Chinese takeaway night.

We find ourselves shopping at Asda and Aldi more than we used to. Their prices are lower than the likes of Tesco and Sainsbury's, but the quality is just as good.
My partner is a good judge of meat, so I trust her opinion.

Gwok Hing is my local Chinese takeaway. They make my 'special curry' just how I like it (don't ask what Anita chooses, it's something unpronounceable), and enough to do us two meals each. All for less than £20.
And importantly, a good clean establishment. After using them for at least four years, we've never got ill off it :)

I used to go to a restaurant in the Chinatown that used to be full of Chinese eating, but only at lunchtime. Never see them in the evenings. That closed down when the bloke retired though, about 1990 I think.
That was the same as you describe - oilcloths, dimly lit, not decorated in decades, 1950s Coca Cola machine in the corner. Not some vintage thing they bought, it had been there since it was new.
Oh yeah and they used to be a Mah Jong gambling den up above. On summer nights they'd have the windows open and you'd hear it going on.

Most Chinese don't need to go to a Chinese takeaway, because they already work in one. Or a restaurant. I can't remember ever seeing a Chinese person in another type of work unless they were students.

Now you're saying that I can't recall working with any either. Not in 35 years and 17 different places.
I did get chatting with a bloke in Las Vegas one time, he was there from China with his company for some sort of trade exhibition. Although he was playing poker in the MGM Grand when I encountered him.
I don't think he worked for a restaurant but actually he didn't say.

Wet and windy as expected. It's going to get worse later this morning, and the BBC have just reported that Avanti North West are advising travellers not to go any further north than Preston. Seems an odd thing to say, if there's enough risk surely they should just cancel the train.

Very strange day so far, really heavy rain, strong winds, sunshine, just need the snow for 4 seasons in the one day.
Raining still but it's getting a bit lighter now and the forecast says dry and sunny for the afternoon so living in hope.
Need to go food shopping again! Seem to be eating an awful lot recently, no idea why.

In the first month or so after I 'retired', in order to give me something to do I would deliberately go out every day for food shopping, whether I needed to do so or not. There are of course food items, vegetables which are past their best after a couple of days, so that gives me an excuse to shop every two days.
However I applaude your habit of going for a long daily walk which includes shopping en route. This activity may be the reason why you are eating more.

I'd agree except last 2 and half years I've been walking to and from work 5 days a week, 2 miles each way - so it's not like the exercise is anything new.
Well I used to walk to work, a distance of 1 mile each way, for 27 years. The only time I would use the car was if it was raining hard.
The walk would take me about 15 - 20 minutes, the drive less than 8, so the car hardly had a chance to warm up.
I deliberately chose to live near where I worked, as most of my colleagues would have to drive for at least 30 - 40 minutes: my immediate boss had to drive for an hour from where he lived to get to work (in a gas guzzling Range Rover)!

I bought my house ten minute walk from where I was working at the time. 8 months later they moved me to another site 7 miles away.
Last place I worked all their sites were two miles away except one that was down in Kent. Pretty sure if I'd stayed long enough they would have moved me there.
16c and sunny, looks like the rain won’t be back now for the next two weeks at least, moving to mid 20s and wall to wall sunshine. Typical as a week tomorrow we will be in Greece paying for that privilege!

Sounds about right for a Friday night out - I'd walk the one mile into town, but the zig-zag walk home probably doubled that.

Just had a shit two or three hours working in the garden, in full sun. But we've moved the table and bench set from the front garden to the patio at the back. A bit of welcome shade to make working outside tolerable.
Not got any paying jobs booked next week, and that means even more time in the garden. But if we do the work in the morningtime, followed by a six hour siesta, I could cope with that.

Doing a number two at a customer's house is a no-no for me, I would instead drive home, even if it's miles away. Only twice in 20 years has it been necessary to do an emergency dump at a customer's house (emergency poos by their very nature are not good), but fortunately both times the customer was out, giving me time to make things right :)

LOL Many years ago I had the roof re-felted , which took a few days to do. So I left the roofers plenty of tea and coffee, let them have the run of the house whilst I went away to stay with a friend.
When I returned, I needed to go to the loo and was surprised to find the bathroom window wide open. The last occupant had obviously had a pretty powerful and 'aromatic' curry!

After another wet night, a damp 15c this morning , no sign of a heatwave here
Warm here already. 26C is forecast. A lot of cloud so only partially sunny.
28C for tomorrow and no cloud.
22C at the moment with a partially clouded sky. Expect the cloud to completely clear in an hour's time and for the temperature to reach 26C.
It's 28C now, and at its zenith. Too hot for me!
No sun here but it is warm. 22C indoors so must be about 25C outside.

Gone from no wind and no cloud this morning to no wind and no sun. Stuffy warm, and not pleasant.
Seems like good thunderstorm weather but we don't have one predicted, only a 10 percent chance of rain.
18C and partially cloudy. There was a little rain last night, but it is expected to be dry today, with temperatures reaching 29 to 30C.
Supposed to get to 30C here too, believe that when I see it.

Walked into the town to get my cheap biscuits. It's properly warm out there and blazing sun. Only a very gentle breeze. 26C.
23.3C in my living room so getting towards the limit of a 'comfortable' indoor temperature. Practically unheard of in my house.
Humidity is low though.

Working in the garden today in that heat was torture, so only endured it for 3 or 4 hours. My next door neighbour copes even worse, she got her husband to take her out in the car for the afternoon, just so she can enjoy the air con.
I've found that the fuel economy in the Volvo round town dropped from 44 mpg to 40, but that extra 10% is money well spent.
Gone quite cool out there now, and tomorrow is forecast to be 6C cooler, which will be much better.
Total overnight change to the forecast here, going to be dull all morning then showers in the afternoon.

Sunny again already, going to be pretty warm. Might be another day of wearing shorts - not a sight folk would pay good money to see, but ok when I'm just working in the garden. And it is more comfortable than long pants.

Supposed to be a bit cooler here, only up to 21 today. Yesterday was seriously warm up in the man cave (have a desk up there for when I work from home). My Fluke has a temp sensor, temp at the ceiling was over 30, and that's with a fan and an air con unit running! Problem is no windows, so have bought some closable vents to fit into the ceiling which will hopefully help get some air flow going- the ceiling is only 6 feet, but the attic is 12ft to the apex of the roof.

Earlier in the week we bought a few plants from a local nursery, a white and a pink budleja (also called 'butterfly bush'), and a nice purple thing that I forget the name of. Already had a couple of small tortoiseshells, a red admiral, a peacock, and a couple of small whites. And it's not even dinnertime yet :)

Watch out for that buddleia, probably a bit late in the season now but next year, if you let it, it will grow bigger than the house.
I cut the one in my yard back down to about 6 foot in April, I'd say that since then it's expanded in size about 20 times what it was. Good looking tree though. Plus they keep their leaves in winter.

I remember you mentioning it, and gave Anita a heads up about its likely mad rate of growth. I think she's hoping that putting the white and the pink plants together, with strategic pruning she'll get it to be more dense and less 'leggy'. We'll see.
Got the windows open just for a bit of through draught, but they are renovating the house one down from mine. So hammering, drilling, sawing you name it they're doing it.
Plus constant coming and going in a Transit Custom which they leave idling right outside. You'd think diesel fuel was free.
So, if I want to listen to some music I'm going to have to close up.
House has been empty for the last month during which it's been mostly 20C or cooler, why wait until the blazing hot weather to start?

The house isn't insulated which makes it worse, need to get round to that which will help a lot.

Obv. it's the underside of the roof itself that will need insulating for you to feel the benefit. Avoid expanding foam insulation between the roof timbers like the plague, I've heard some real horror stories about that. Better to use kingspan-type insulating slabs, with a small air gap between them and the roofing felt for ventilation.

Yes, that's what I've been looking at, though I can just insulate the top and sides of the room rather than the roof, and do the floor joists around the outside of the room, would be easier to do.

Sounds like a plan :) You're quite lucky to have a usable space up there, so many attics have so much going on in the way of extra supporting and bracing timbers there's not enough room to swing a cat.
Do you remember that news item a few years ago where that bloke removed those timbers? He was wanting extra space, instead he got a collapsed roof :doh: I think he may have got some prison time over that. Seems a bit extreme piling on the misery by chucking him jail, maybe there were aggravating circumstances, like growing a weed farm up there...
Another dull start. Supposed to get partially sunny soon. Managed 23C yesterday, same today probably.
Only 2 more weeks of summer left.

All blue skies right now on the Chorley Riviera and 18C, but will get some cloud soon. Forecast to peak at 24C. Looking at long range forecast, no rain predicted till at least the end of the month. I'm sure we'll be getting a hosepipe ban by then.

Sun is out here now but there's a lot of hazy cloud, suspect that's the best we'll get today.
20C, but dull and overcast.
We're going to a wedding this afternoon - at least it's not going to rain.
The temperature is expected to reach 25C; hope I won't be too hot in my new suit.

Yes, I know what you mean - sadly if it is not former colleagues or neighbours, it is close friends.
The last wedding I attended was about 10 years ago, however it wouldn't surprise me if in a year's time we will be invited to a christening. Would be nice to welcome someone into the world for a change. :)

We get the Brothers In Arms sky quite often round here, I think it's the pollution.
The other common one is Pink Floyd 'Obscured By Clouds.'

We never got any sunshine here although it's still been reasonably warm.
It's been comfortably warm here, but the sky has never cleared from being dull and overcast.
Only got to 17C today, no sun. It's no longer like California without the palm trees.
Even seen some dead leaves in the gutters.

It's been colder than I thought it would be - I even wore a light jacket when I went out to do some shopping.
It was mildly chilly here last night but today it's been quite close.
At the moment it is 12C, reaching 22C this evening. Cloudy blue sky with no rain expected.
The prognosis for next week is for Tuesday to have the best weather: reaching a maximum of 24C, then the weather deteriorates with rain on Thursday continuing through to the weekend.
Another dull start here we may get rain soon. Temperature in my living room has dropped below 20C for the first time in weeks.
Sunday through Tuesday the temperatures go up again - 26C predicted - but suspect that's going to be the last of the warm weather this year.

Oh right. The shop is only a couple of hundred yards if I want to get some milk - I can manage that without an electric scooter even if youngsters today can't.
Shame they weren't around back when I was working 7 miles away - I would have had one then - would have saved me 2 grand a year.

Was raining heavy here but only for about 20 minutes, now it's just spitting off and on.
No rain was forecast for today when I checked early morning. Two loads of washing on the line later and almost dry and from nowhere it started hissing it down…
Me and the kids are camping for three nights from Friday in East Runton, North Norfolk - predictably the forecast is looking iffy… Sue doesn’t do camping, and the dog’s not coming as last time he chomped through 2 airbeds… I guess we’ll just have to brave out the last gasps of summer in the damp! There are some nice looking pubs/restaurants in walking distance so we probably only need the tent to sleep in.

Yes, I agree, there’s a touch of nostalgia too, as every holiday I ever went on until I was 20 was camping in the UK, and if you can’t put up with a bit of pitter patter on the canvas you’re not going to last very long!

Another sunny start but forecast says we are in for a barrage of heavy rain right across the afternoon.
Big storm rolled through yesterday.
A tree in the local park got hit by lightning, and has pretty much been destroyed.

Dry and a bit sunny in Chorley (for now), but ten miles up the road in Preston it was proper rain, the M6 was like a river. So definitely not a day for planning anything outdoorish.
Rain got me on the way back from my daily walk, it was that fine rain too.

First day of our mini break camping in North Norfolk and setting up the tent was dryish - but was rained on as we unloaded before going to Sheringham where there was several torrential downpours in the afternoon.
All cleared up now and clear skies with lovely views of the stars, 15c. Most of the rest of the weekend looks good, some rain possibly from tea time tomorrow but that should be it according to the forecast currently.

Is it your 'high up' gutter, or the gutter for your kitchen extension? Either way, don't be taking any daft risks. I can get down there with van and ladders at some point. Need to sort your door before the wintertime anyway.

It's the kitchen extension one so I can easily get to it by standing on crate. I can almost get to it standing on the ground.
No chance I'd be tackling the high one. We all know what happened to Rod Hull. Although having that emu tucked under his arm probably increased the risk exponentially.
Well I can't see what the problem is with the gutter, there's no crack in it which I thought was what the problem was.
Will have to wait for the rain to start and see what's happening then.

Maybe the gutter outlet blocked where it goes into the downpipe? Seen it loads of times, the gutter just fills up and overflows. Or sometimes, if the downpipe goes into the ground, it can block further down. Rapping your knuckles on the pipe will tell you if that's the case (it'll sound/feel solid).
I'll have to check that out tomorrow.

Feeling quite autumnal out there. Blue skies and sunny, but rain is on the way. After yesterday's failed attempt to dry the washing on the line, Anita's out there giving it another go. At least this time we'll be at home to rescue it when the downpours arrive. I'd be sticking it in the dryer if it was up to me.
Giving column inches to our laundry routine, we need to get a life. Roll on NEBO :)

Had to catch a butterfly that had somehow got into the living room. Don't know the type but it was orange and black. Chucked it out the window and it flew off so didn't seem any worse for it.

Most probably it was either a Monarch or a Red Admiral butterfly.
