I do like Red Hot Chili Peppers, but they do some God-awful recordings. Rough as a badger's arse. And Californication is no exception.

I seem to remember that they withdrew their catalogue, so their second hand stuff is very expensive and the only reissues are boots.

One of my brothers has that LP or had it. I think he gave away his vinyl.

I saw him once in London, not in concert. He was coming down the steps onto The Mall as I was walking up. Dressed in a very smart suit and he'd washed those stripes off his face.

He also chose the songs and co-produced the album with Simon Climie, who had previously worked on several of Clapton's albums. Which to my knowledge never appeared on the vinyl for some reason. It is the only Roxy album I don't have on vinyl, but fortunately the CD version does include Virginia Plain, as I agree that is the best track on there.

For me they got a lot better from "For Your Pleasure" on.

I stand corrected  On a slightly related note, have you come across the 2019 remixes RSD album? It only seems to have remixes of Ladytron, 2HB and Chance Meeting (don't know how that would warrant a double album), but I'm thinking I might give it a go. Selling quite cheap at the moment.

Listening to Radio Caroline this morning, they played a song that caught Anita's attention enough for her to "Shazam" it, find out what it was. Turned out to be called "Broken English" by Marianne Faithful. Something that has until now passed me by, I'm going to have to remedy that, there aren't too many things we both like.

Reviews of the album makes positive mention of her version of Working Class Hero, so now this goes onto my birthday wants list :)

Few artists managed to develop so far and so successfully as the late Mark Hollis. I love Talk Talk's synth pop but their 'post rock' is quite exceptional. In their own way him and Tim Friese-Green did a George Martin in terms of how they used the studio. No home should be without something by them!

I have to confess I don't have anything by Talk Talk (even worse, when I hear the name I think of the title of the second album by The Psychedelic Furs!). So to put right this error, what Talk Talk title(s) would you recommend I try?

Radio Caroline was 15 miles down the coast from Harwich, never listened to anything else from '66 thru to the late 70's. so much stuff in my collection because Caroline played it inc Broken English. Every home really should have a copy.. :)

Every year I include something "modern" on my Christmas wants list. Usually a disappointment. Last year it was "Brat" by Charli XCX, which I played once and never again.

This year it's "When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go" by Billie Eilish. Much better to my ears, though very much 'out there'. Includes "Bad Guy" and the theme song from the last "True Detective" series "Bury a Friend".

Cheers Barry, but I spoke too soon - almost immediately after my last post it started up with a fair amount of surface noise (not visible scratches so maybe it'll clean out). That was on the 'live' disc, so I'm not too bothered. I'm most of the way through the 'studio' disc now, no issues at all there.

I don't know if the studio disc is your preferred one, it is mine.

It's probably not a "must have", but as I was a bit of a Floyd fanatic at the time, buying their records on release, 'More' being their third was bought automatically. Having seen them since the days when Syd Barrett played with them, I have remained a fan up to 'Animals', where IMO they started to go downhill. I lost interest with 'The Wall', and subsequent releases.

A favourite of mine. Sort of Britpop but ten years early - great melodies, social observations and even a spot of Miss Marple. Deceptively straightforward in some ways, I still keep finding more in it.

The only Tom Waits album I own, bought on a friend's recommendation. I really wanted to like Tom Waits, but two tracks in I realised it wasn't going to happen :( So this CD is going FOC for anyone who likes Tom Waits but doesn't have this one.

I came to Tom Waits very late, having heard bits and pieces and not getting on with it. It changed for me when I heard Blue Valentine. More accessible, with a back story / theme to it. I bought it, played it a few times and began to "get" Tom Waits. I moved on to Rain Dogs and after that, I'd say I've liked 80% of the Albums I've heard of his.

Saisho was Dixons/Rumbelows fake Japanese brand and Currys had Matsui. I remember Amstrad was the next tier up in pricing!

Although one of my brothers had a Saisho walkman. Very plastiky but the sound was fine. I used to 'borrow' it when he was out. He was always complaining how quick it used up the batteries.

Another Dixons brand was Prinzsound - I had a portable cassette recorder made by them, bought in 1976 (I wonder what that would be in today's money). It no doubt sounded shit and ate batteries like a good 'un. The only tapes I had for it were Autobahn album and Temptations greatest hits.

Just be aware that unless it’s the “Deluxe” version of Boys for Pele “Professional Widow” is just the plain version on the original CD, not the dance version(s) of the single you’ve lost. A great album, though.

Bugger. Still be worth having though, and it was only 3 quid. I got caught out with the last recommendation from you Alex (Layo & Bushwacka "Night Works") - it didn't have the full vocal version of "Love Story". So then I bought the single, but still didn't have the version I was after, I should have gone for "Love Story vs. Finally" Silly me. Still, the rest of the album is one of the very best EDM albums around I think. So all in all, mustn't grumble :)
