I used to have a copy, but I couldn't get on with it so gave it away. Mike suggested I might prefer 'Californication', which I have yet to try.

It is quite a bit more melodic. You might like 'One Hot Minute' too.

Went to The Hyde Park show on the Saturday - June 2004, it was a great gig, might spin that myself tonight.

Kelis - Kaleidoscope (1999)

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20260727/a90d37506ae56b0d5e3e296a3842a8cc.jpg

Loved this when it came out, not played in a very very long time. Production duties by The Neptunes is on point, and eclectic songs. Retrospective reviews seem to paint it as “groundbreaking” at the time.

Her last album Food was in 2014 and then she turned to actual food, becoming a saucier and releasing her own line of sauces and running a street food truck and touring UK festivals!

She seems to have largely disappeared from music and the limelight, and moved to run a farm in Kenya with her children following the death of her second husband in 2022.

I came to his albums only quite recently - this one, then Tea for the Tillerman and Teaser and the Firecat. But they're both vinyl, and I'm feeling lazy :) Very listenable.

The Aloof - Sinking (1996)

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20260727/06ccb5bfbeadef2dee95eb53d5abaa76.jpg

Just ripped a George Michael CD to FLAC, which got me thinking about Princess Diana’s death, as I remember Radio 1 playing ambient/chilllout/downtempo music the morning after she died, including “You Have Been Loved”. I was on holiday in Wales at the time, and thought the radio wasn’t working properly! We put the telly on, and then found out what had happened, Anyway, another one of the tracks they played was The Last Stand which closes this album, so it seemed logical to give it a spin.

Couple of interesting albums there Mike - didn’t mind some of either of them (Black Dog / White Horse very good, can see why it’s their number 1 track on Tidal.)
Hints of Arctic Monkeys and a Black Country Streets!

Flogging Molly a cross between Dexys and Pogues - on speed!

The one I'm playing is the self-titled 1979 debut - Ghost Town didn't come out until 1981, so not surprising it's not on it! :D I can't explain your "Best of" though, because Ghost Town is probably their best known track!

I should have added that Ghost Town was a non-album single - it was a standalone single release, quite popular to do that back in the 80's.

I have the original release, German one, on vinyl but I replaced it with the CD without bothering to check . Needless to say bought the worst remaster of the many possible versions. Same with their first album. Probably loads of OG CDs out there one of those will do me. I hardly ever play it.

I can’t remember if I have posted this before,so apologies if I have, but love this album so much that I haven’t yet graduated to listen to their other ones! Another gem found via Radio Paradise.

“Brothers Alejandro and Estevan Gutiérrez comprise instrumental duo Hermanos Gutiérrez. Using traditional guitars, lap steel, and organic percussion, their music evokes the feel of remote spaces and untamed places, from Ecuadorian beaches to the deserts of Mexico and the American Southwest. They draw primary inspiration from the western soundtracks of Ennio Morricone and Stelvio Cipriani, vintage psychedelia, and classic Latin and South American music from 1950 through the '70s.”

They draw primary inspiration from the western soundtracks of Ennio Morricone and Stelvio Cipriani, vintage psychedelia, and classic Latin and South American music from 1950 through the '70s.”

The description certainly sounds interesting / enticing.

I can’t remember if I have posted this before,so apologies if I have, but love this album so much that I haven’t yet graduated to listen to their other ones! Another gem found via Radio Paradise.

Yesterday I spent over 10 hours driving and played several soundtrack albums including Kill Bill volumes 1 & 2 - Hermanos Gutierrez has a similar vibe (I felt) to the Ennio Morricone tracks on those (which the Tidal description also suggests). Going back to the beginning and playing their debut now from 2017 - 8 Anos

When you mentioned yesterday that other album of his, my first thought was Kill Bill! My second thought was where has my Kill Bill soundtrack gone, I'll go out to the car, it might be there.

I also looked around for that album (Hijos Del Sol), and it would seem to be available only digitally or on vinyl, at prices I'm not able to justify :( Where did you get yours from? It does sound like something I'd really like.

Hi Steve, I'm afraid I don't have a physical copy, i am just streaming it via Tidal (also on Spotify, not sure on others but I suspect it is). I do think you'd like it - to be fair, it's hard not to like, good playing, well recorded, and atmospheric. I guess only small criticism is that they are a bit "samey" (having played most of the albums today).

(I don't think you've succumbed to any streaming options, yet? You could easily get started with a Wiim Mini (about £90) and depending on amp/DAC options you have, an optical connection from that and controlled by a (very good) smartphone app...)

I agree it's not their best, but better than it was - much of it was a bit of a screechy mess to my ears, but the new speakers are making much more sense of it :) I used to have a 'dub' version of this, 'Echo Dek' it was called. I lent it to a mate about 20 years ago, and I've made no effort to get it back, it's that good.

I used to have that, or one that looked a lot like it, isn't Dolly Parton in the mix somewhere? It was relegated to 'van use' though, but vanny has a tendency to chew up cds, so they last about a year then they're thrown.

ECM seems to take up at least 50% of my listening these days, you might say I'm addicted. Tonight its Jan Garbarek from 1977. The usual ambient sounds, plus an eerie organ track as the finale that wouldn't be out of place in a hammer horror soundtrack, well slightly out of place perhaps.

OK chaps.

So, over the past couple of years I have mainly been filling holes in / replacing worn copies of records in my collection, as opposed to buying new releases.

I have completed the majority of the easier purchases of records that matter to me and am now starting on the more difficult ones. First up in this category is Sabbath - Paranoid. My original copy was a fairly decent first pressing, but that is now pretty well unlistenable and has been for the last 10 years or so.

I don’t expect to find anything similar at a reasonable price, so my question to folk more learned than I is, what vinyl pressing, at a reasonable budget (< £50), would you recommend ?

Thanks for your help.

Mike

Oh dear Mike, you seem to be going down a rabbit hole there, and maybe taking some of us with you ;) I never gave it any thought before, but I do now.

I've never heard of her :sofa: even though she's been around for 30+ years! I'll have a look on the You Tube shortly.

I think you’ll like her - a mix of different styles - try and pick this one up first (you can get it for peanuts on CD - £3.48 delivered on your favourite Music Magpie on eBay) - it’s her third album, but her most “successful” if you count #55 on the UK albums chart as successful!

Has there ever been a cover sticker that tells it more like what it should be ?

They weren't the first to come with that suggestion - this is one I had 50-odd years ago, and yes I did play it loud :)

The fact that the workshop sign would appear backwards to observers outside has always niggled me. Apart from that, it's not a bad LP at all.

The best of Beck's recordings? Well, I don't know about that, for me his best was his debut album 'Truth', with Rod Stewart. :sofa:

Strange - I think the same. As I might have mentioned, it took me a long time to decide if I liked the Dan or not. And whilst I was "to-ing and fro-ing", I continued to buy their LPs (but missing a few en route). Think it was 'Gaucho' when I decided I really did like them, so filled in the 'gaps' - on vinyl for the sake of consistency.

This is a slightly leftfield but really interesting and entertaining compilation

Can't make my mind up about these two discs by Jimmy Nail. Pretty standard 'torch' songs, competently sung, but nothing to grab me. A bit of a disappointment as I really liked him in the TV series 'Auf Wiedersehen Pet'.

I thought he was an actor - Auf Wiedersehen Pet ?

Edit: Just actually read the post, as opposed to looking at the pretty (?) Pictures.
