Not sure about this - read a review on albumoftheyear that said something along the lines of “interesting rather than compelling” which probably sums up my feelings.

I’ll have to try again, but so far I dont “get” Math Rock (aside from the hugely irritating use of the Americanised version of Maths…). Just seems a bit of a jumbled mess to me…. :sofa:

Thanks Alex. Doesn't sound like my sort of thing at all. I'm not that keen on King Crimson, and am totally indifferent about Yes; an opinion formed about the latter, when I saw them play around the time of their first LP.

I know what you mean. For a long while it didn't rate as highly as either Infected or Soul Mining but now, it's squarely up there.
I believe this is the only album where you'll find 'Experiment IV', one of my favourite KB songs.
Hmmm…. Seems I don’t have it on CD, only on vinyl and now I want to hear Experiment IV and it doesn’t appear to be on the streaming platforms, one for the upstairs rig tomorrow!
I rarely play The The, simply because I played them so much in the 80’s, Infected especially, but would agree Mind Bomb would be my less played of these two and Soul Mining. Strangely I’ve never really tried his later stuff, must do that.

Sort of, in extremis. ADP are renowned for microtonal (smaller than a semitone) compositions. Incredibly complex and even more complicated to play.
Looking forward to more of Kels - this is out yesterday, not sure when a full album is due.

You know when a new film hits the cinemas, and people rave about it, so you go and see it and wonder what all the fuss is about?
Well, for me the opposite happened with 'Ensoulment'. I saw some rather negative views of it, and so held off buying it. Then at the back end of last year HMV were selling the vinyl copies super cheap, so I took a punt. And I really liked it, probably because I wasn't expecting much. Oh, and the pressing and sound quality is top notch I think.
I'd say Matt Johnson sounds a bit calmer these days, less angry young man, more miserable old git... only kidding Matt, love ya really :)

Time to squeeze in one more, this is an upgraded (3 additional tracks) of Faouzia’s November release, Film Noir.

Another one that’s hard to describe, but I can already tell is going to be a favourite after playing it last night and again now.
Moroccan-Canadian Faouzia (no, I don’t know how to pronounce her name - Fay-oozier?) has a wonderful voice, and the songs are (perhaps sometimes overly) dramatic, but extremely “hooky.”

I listened/watched a couple of tracks this morning on the You Tube. That is a unique look, and what's the deal with those noses? I imagine the guitarist would be popular with the ladies, the drummer not so much...
And though I didn't not like the music, it was a KEXP live set. I was caught out with this previously, with Little Barrie/Malcolm Catto. The KEXP session was brilliant, so I bought the Quatermass 7 CD on the strength of that. Disappointment doesn't even cover it. If any of you guys like this but don't have the CD, you're welcome to my copy FOC, as I will never play it.

Debut trip-hop(ish) album from the Belgian band originally just called Hoover but added the phonic due to alleged pressure from the vacuum cleaner company. Great album from a really good band who have a habit of getting through lead singers like no tomorrow yet still manage to sound consistent.

I remember buying their first album when it came out, about 1998 I think. When I put it on, (rather loud), and the bass kicked in on 'Never Ever', an ornamental flower I had sited near the left speaker fell over. I liked that :)
And in the accompanying video Melanie Blatt had a most impressive and animated cleavage. That's what I remember the most.

I don’t recall the animated cleavage, not sure I should Google that term…. My wife is the same age as Nicole Appleton and was often told that they look similar. There’s no animated cleavage connection in that observation…
Any road up, I was slightly worried this may be “Math Rock” but apparently not…. Phew! :D

Atabasca is an Italian instrumental trio consisting of Luca Mongia, Paolo Mazziotti, and Valerio Pompei. Formed in 2023, their sound blends psychedelic jazz-funk, afrobeat, and classic Italian film soundtracks (reminiscent of the 1960s Golden Age). They are named after the Athabasca Sand Dunes in Canada.
It’s made it past a couple of plays, I can definitely see the “soundtracks” element. Quite enjoyable.

Interesting - I was not aware of that. But on CD the prices start at twenty-odd quid, that's too rich for me.
Obtaining Kate's later releases can be tricky and expensive - a few years ago I saw a vinyl copy of "Aerial" at a record fair where the seller was asking £250, and I remember the vinyl being panned by critics for its poor sq. I ended up buying it on CD.
I'll stick with my 1985 Experiment IV on "The Whole Story" vinyl, and wait for a used CD copy of "Best of the Other Sides" to appear. No rush :)

It appears to be a DVD Audio rip, and is actually pretty good, she has a distinctive voice and some interesting songs. Who needs new music when you still have stuff over a quarter of a century old that you can’t remember at all?!

Quite possible, seen her a few times but haven't played her much since 2018, but played her a lot back in 2013 and 14. Last.fm tells me I played this album the most;

I think she got a Grammy nomination for Paradise Hotel - she was very critical of George Bush. She's a bit like Lucinda Williams, but without the raspy voice and a bit more folky.

I liked all the Simple Minds albums with Michael MacNeil on keyboards. When he left they became focused on big guitar chords and lost their character IMHO.

I explored this for the first time a few weeks ago (only 50-odd years late but never mind!) Really liked it instrumentally, just felt that Jon Anderson's vocals were a bit detached, like he's a singer-songwriter whose melodies were being bolted on to a rock band. I went on to explore Close To The Edge and felt the components were much better integrated. May still buy TYA though.
FWIW Burning Shed are selling vinyl copies of TYA and CTTE signed by Bill Bruford for £40 each. I hope this doesn't mean he's fallen on hard times.

I was a big Yes fan back in the day, saw them a few times too and on another of my cycle home jaunts from Leicester's De Montfort Hall, I got to meet Rick Wakeman. He called the hangers on ‘for autographs folk’ into the band dressing room, but all he wanted to talk about was football, so I was a bit out of my depth! Nice bloke though and kind of him to invite us backstage.
Relayer is probably my favourite Yes album and I only play the early stuff. I have seen the later incarnations of the band, but that's not Yes. I lost interest after Tormato, when Anderson and Wakeman left around 1980. Nerdy little known fact, after Anderson & Wakeman left, Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes from The Buggles joined the band, Horn did vocals on the Drama album and toured with them - Downes replaced Wakeman on keyboards.

Although Drama with Trevor Horn is a very different sound, a bit more rock than prog, but they only did that one before the original band broke up. My knowledge ends there as I never bothered with them after that.

I'm pleased to say that although I failed to explore early Yes until recently, I was on board for GFTO and Drama at the time. IIRC Drama wasn't well received, probably for narrow-minded reasons relating to the personnel, but I think it has undergone a reappraisal in recent years. I got the Kevin Gray remaster of it a few years ago and it's a banger, makes my original sound damp by comparison.
RW has a good reputation. A friend of mine found himself at the same lunch table (box at a football match) and said that he was naturally convivial.
Danny Baker tells a story about him as a pianist-for-hire earning his crust. Apparently RW got a call from Tony Visconti one day asking if he'd join a session for his usual fee (£20 I think). He turned up to find it was T Rex recording Get It On. When RW asked to see the score he found that there was no piano part on it. Visconti said they just wanted him to do that glissando at the start. £20 and on his way he went...
Good luck lads, I suspect Yes are not an easy band to access in 2026. If you are feeling really masochistic Tales from Topographic Oceans is arguably the original bands most divisive record, a double album with only 4 songs. I played it to death and loved everything about it. A gorgeous Roger Dean double album gatefold sleeve with one song on each side of the 2 LPs . . . what's not to like :lol:
I believe the below was their best selling record, certainly their most ambitious. I think the landscape was very different then, in those days you bought an album, put it on with your mates in a low light room and sat listening to the whole thing then discussed it after. Yes aren't a streaming playlist band, so very much of their time. For me they are a time machine. I've never tired of them and doubt I ever will . . a bit like Floyd.

I also saw Yes a couple of times in the early 70’s and did have a few of their albums, none of which are still in my collection.
My musical tastes seemed to change quite a bit in my 20’s , through the 1970’s , not completely sure why although I do think that my move from the west of Scotland down to the south coast of England played a big part.

Strange title as until recently there were no railways in Tibet. The Chinese found a way to overcome problems with the permafrost, and did indeed build a railway line, but it doesn't reach the centre of Lasa; the railway station is about 5 miles away.

I know I've seen these live, along with Eat Static, Autechre, and many others, on nights at Manchester Academy known as 'Megadog'... great nights out, just a shame I can remember sod all about any of them :doh: Those were the days :)

During lockdown I had a phase delving into the Riding Easy catalogue and similar labels like Ripple and Heavy Psych Sounds. When I was younger I used to think that the heaviest music was fast, now I'm older I find that slow/mid tempo fuzz is heavier.

Followed by a mad dash down Renfield Street for the last train.

Great days back then, probably a gig every week, that continued when I moved down to Bournemouth but not every week, as not every band came to Bournemouth, stopped going to gigs a few years ago as I don’t enjoy the larger venues, much better atmosphere in smaller venues.

Devo's Are We Not Men is a terrific album Alex, you should check it out. If you recall the part in "Goodfellas" towards the end where Henry is being tracked by a police helicopter, you will have heard their excellent cover of The Stones' (I can't get no) Satisfaction.

I think Bob is an “acquired taste” that I doubt I will ever acquire, however all credit to him for getting people to actually spend their own money on that album, and at least you like it, Dom, and that’s all that matters!

Dull fact of the day: It wasn't actually Aled Jones on the soundtrack version; he did record it and have a hit with it, but it was a cover version a year or two later. (Sorry, not nerdy enough to remember the exact dates!)
Angine de Poitrine were guests on yesterday's 'Later...with Jules Holland'. Whilst being largely unimpressed by their playing, I did appreciate them as a performance act.
The first thing you notice is their distinctive, fantastic-looking costumes; either back with white dots, or white with black dots. I was impressed by the continuation of the dot motif to the performer's hands and feet, with the black/white dot pattern being complimentary to that of their costumes.

I also worked out how the drummer could see whilst wearing his costume. It turns out that the shoulders of the costume do not correspond with the drummers shoulders, they are higher so the drummer can see out through the 'mouth' of the costume. This was confirmed when the drummer stretched out his arms sideways.
I have an annoying habit of becoming obsessed with unimportant details such as the above. So whilst unimpressed by their sound, I am impressed by their imaginative look.
