I know very little about your music tastes @Tim but based upon your Kneecap comment this might be up your Strasse. A quick read up on REN's unfortunate background would add some useful context.
His Album Sick Boi is more personal and equally as good.
I think it / he's incredible.
I know very little about your music tastes @Tim but based upon your Kneecap comment this might be up your Strasse.
If I knew the answer to that myself Mike, life might be a little simpler!
Very eclectic, constantly moving and I go through phases, I'm in a jazz phase at the moment I guess - the only constant I would say is it's rarely mainstream. I saw the Kneecap movie recently and that really opened my eyes to rap and hip hop, as did Straight Outta Compton, both outstanding films. Previously I avoided rap and hip hop, because I didn't understand it - I still don't totally, but I'm learning to respect it.
I'll give it a go later if I can find it, thanks :)

Perfect answer. I've tried Jazz and the only stuff that appeals is well, well leftfield. No classical, no Funk/ Jazzfunk, no "Pop", no "middle of the road, whatever that is", no Choral etc. Give REN a try, he's a really interesting dude.
Seems like only yesterday I bought this, 37 odd years ago…. On vinyl, (and subsequently CD) but cheating and streaming on Tidal this morning. Next move now I have managed to wheedle the big speakers into the living room is a turntable…. :eyebrows:
The title track Stateside is 2 minutes of pure instrumental genius and a great test track.

I suppose now I think about it that's harder than it seemed :) - I probably listen to Emotional Rescue the most but it seems reckless to claim it's better than the Fingers/Bleed/Exile triumvirate. I like Some Girls and Beggars Banquet a lot too.

The single sounds more like rave to me. I mean it's a long way from something like Wu Tang.
Geckøs - Geckøs (2025)
https://www.normanrecords.com/artwork/medium/85/210585-geck-s-gecks.jpg
Stumbled across the track "Dance of the Gecko" on Radio Paradise, haven't listened to any Howe Gelb stuff for years, this is really good, with production by John Parish (PJ Harvey, Eels, Tracy Chapman to name but 3).
"Geckøs is an indie-folk supergroup formed by acclaimed songwriter M. Ward, desert rock pioneer Howe Gelb (Giant Sand), and Irish multi-instrumentalist McKowski (The Lost Brothers). Born from a spontaneous recording session at a mutual friend's wedding, the trio creates a "transatlantic" sound that blends Southwestern Americana with Spanish guitar and Irish mysticism."

I think that might be why I like it, it's probably not really rap, but I don't claim to know anything about rap.
I'm off to Google Wu Tang now . . .

Public Enemy from back then was pretty good too ("It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold us Back" is one I have), though really I prefer the more mellow positive vibe of A Tribe Called Quest or De La Soul. Less gangsta.
My favourite rapper would have to be Q-Tip who, apart from his band Tribe Called Quest, contributed on Chemical Brothers' "Galvanise" and "Go", and Deee Lite's "Groove is in the Heart".

I only own about 30 / 40 or so Cassettes. I've gone to sell the deck a few times but then can't bring myself to do it. I do love the medium and the deck. I drag it out 2 or 3 times a year to keep it going, promise myself to buy more cassettes and listen to it more (it does sound pretty special) but then put it back in the cupboard and buy more vinyl
Certainly a great deck, Mike! I can see why you wouldn't want to part with it. I only ever really used mine to make compilation tapes for the car back in the 80's. Most of them ended with "Happy Hour" by The Housemartins - it was the shortest single I knew and I always managed to fit it on the last bit of tape on the spool!
Finishing the evening appropriately with:

Excellent recording, the production is very 80s to my ears, lots of keyboard going on. According to Wikipedia, in a 2023 interview with Vulture (an American entertainment website apparently), he was so determined to be the support act For Talking Heads, he started writing more oblique pieces of music, embracing new studio techniques... seems he had a bit of a thing for David Byrne.
Reading between the lines it looks like he is not that keen on this album. Never mind, I've decided I do quite like it :) Even though the album art looks like it was designed by the bloke who invented shell suits.

Interesting question Martin, it was released on CD in 1995 but for some reason I never bought it then, not sure why. This version is the RSD release from a few ago and the first time vinyl (my preferred way of listening to music) and mastered by Bernie Grundman, so it sounds great .
Is it worth getting, in my opinion yes but its not a live concert, its a live album with tracks picked from different gigs, which may not be to everyone’s taste.

I've seen it for sale second hand lots of times but never really thought of them as a live band even though I've seen them live a couple of times.
I might pick it up if it's still in the shop next time I go. I don't mind live albums that are stitched together, I mean Sinatra 'Live at the Sands' is the greatest live album ever and that's put together from different shows.

Anyway talking of Robert Plant, I like this one with Jimmy Page:

Santana - 'Abraxas'

I bought this LP on its release, obviously for the music, and not for the cover. But lately the cover artwork has more interest for me as, apart from her hair, the Madonna of the Annunciation looks very much like my partner.
The artist also did the cover for Miles Davis's 'Bitches Brew'.

Another new discovery, collaboration between Fineas (big brother and producer to Billie Eilish as well as accomplished solo artist, and Ashe, who has a lovely voice.). Hard to pin down the style but I really like it - reviews suggest a 70’s pop/folk-rock, it does have that vibe, a sort of less rocky Rumours feel. Nicely produced, too.

I bought a Billie Eilish album recently, so am aware of Fineas - he did an excellent job there, and so I'm sure this'll be a good 'un. And Ashe there, looking like a Woodstock throwback will probably be my kind of thing too :)

Yes, I played it on Friday but didn’t listen properly like I am now - definitely a bit good! A lot of her later albums have never quite clicked with me like her earlier ones did, this one definitely has though. (Will have to revisit some of those.)
Sound quality on this new one is awesome too, great production.

Saw her at the Norwich Arts Centre in February 1992 - quite by chance, really, but that’s what got me into her - don’t suppose there’s any likelihood she’ll be playing there again! (Unfortunately!)
I’m the same as you, Tim, I loved her earlier stuff but my interest dwindled with the later releases, I agree this one is a return to form (although scanning a few online reviews not everyone agrees - do they ever?!)
. . . don’t suppose there’s any likelihood she’ll be playing there again!
No, I think that ship has sailed for sure! Last time I saw her was during a sold out run at the Hammersmith Apollo - an extraordinary performance.
Haha, yeah the new fans won't like it because it's more like the old stuff, the older fans like it because it is and that's before you touch on the politics. There will be a lot of American fans who really won't like that!
Anyway, those that don't like it, go play something else - as for me, I think it's great :)

It’s official: The Last Dinner Party aren’t one hit wonders. The all-female quintet, who became a breakout hit with the huge success of their debut album Prelude To Ecstasy (2024), signed to Island Records (Florence + The Machine, Sabrina Carpenter) and now confirm their talent with From The Pyre. Following in the footsteps of their idols — David Bowie, Queen, and Kate Bush — the English band deliver flamboyant new pop songs, packed with finely honed melodies and irresistible hooks. Everything is tragic and intense here. Emotions run high, and Abigail Morris’s soaring voice, like a Greek priestess, rises and falls over grand instrumental flights. Whether alone at the piano (“Sail Away”) or backed by richer, dramatic orchestrations (“The Scythe”, “This Is The Killer Speaking”), she belts out freedom and love with full lungs, even whispering in French on “Riffle”. Listeners will come to life and die a thousand times over the course of these ten tracks, which drift between glam rock and New Romanticism, produced by the legendary Alan Moulder. A dazzling tour de force sure to thrill the fans. © Charlotte Saintoin/Qobuz

My New Band Believe - My New Band Believe (2026)
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20260514/fb068642aab6030e1b59f0b207b35bbd.jpg
Stumbled across this whilst looking for a review of another album - not the sort of thing that usually floats my boat but one of a handful of albums I can’t stop playing this week.
“My New Band Believe is the avant-garde, experimental chamber folk project spearheaded by singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Cameron Picton, the former bassist and vocalist of the acclaimed English rock band Black Midi.”
I don’t really know how to describe it, have no idea what “avant-garde experimental chamber folk” music is, but this is rather strangely compelling for reasons I can’t really explain, especially the stories of the songs. Like nothing I would normally listen to, (and having tried his former band Black Midi I won’t be revisiting that back catalogue) so I’ll file this under mysterious.
Not the best period for music IMO. :(

Ah, dear old Sheriff Fatman.
I think that you and I could have a very interesting music chat.
'Shopper's Paradise' was always my favourite of theirs:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DviT7kPhLJU
The '80s to me seemed to be dominated by ephemeral pop groups which despite having imaginative names such as: Aztec Camera; Cabaret Voltaire; Altered Images; Duran Duran; Culture Club, etc. only produced a couple of decent songs that lasted.
There were however some good post-punk bands of the '80s such as: The Police; U2 and the Cure.
Just my ten penny's worth.

Exactly the same here, Steve - which was why I decided to play it! I did enjoy it, had to turn it down that late though as the bass was rattling the room! I think when I first got it I was perhaps hoping for a Mezzanine pt.2 (which it definitely isn't). But playing it this morning at lowish volume was a perfect start to the day :) Cheers for putting it in my head.
The Anine Remix album is like rocking horse poo, I just got lucky at a car boot sale a few years ago. It is not an official release, a bootleg really, so no official outlets (and Discogs won't even re-sell it). Having said that I don't think it's much cop. Nothing like as good as "NO Protection" Mad Professor thing.

Looks like your Heligoland is the limited edition(?) blue cover, Steve - mine's the usual orange. I don't think there's any difference to the tracks? Haven't played that one in a while, either...

I wondered about that too when I bought it, but then I read somewhere there is no difference other than the colour. Just seems to be a lot less blue ones knocking about.

What kind of music is Tim? Being on the DG label I wonder if it is something that would be called "world music". If so it would be of interest to me. :)
I'm not sure how you would describe Hania Rani really Barry, neo clasical pianist? She's Polish and has a style all of her own, this is probably my favourite album of hers. Influenced by Nils Frahm if you know him?

I don’t really know Bluegrass, but found this album on tidal, and it’s rather jolly! A virtuoso Mandolin player, plus she has a nice voice. Very enjoyable.

Good man. I listen to it maybe once a year, but I do enjoy it.
Reminded me of Orbital in places, which is no bad thing!
Oh go on, then! Probably not the first album that springs to mind when you want some Orbital - 2004’s Blue album is nonetheless a great slab of music reminiscent of their early stuff.

Yeah, could be a mission  It's actually a highly rated, well known compilation, if you're into 60'S Psych / Garage / Freakbeat Alex. Lots of rare and obscure tracks on it. Every bit as good as the Nuggets compilations, imo.
Edit: CD13 - Freak Beat Fantoms is a pretty good snapshot of what you get.
Funnily enough, that one (vol 13) is the one I had started listening to, as it is on Tidal along with a few others. Not sure it will be my thing, but you never know until you try!

I’ve been looking at the vinyl prices of some of the tracks I most like on these CD’s and they are averaging out at, wait for it ….. …… …… £350 ! a pop.
WTF ! ?
Makes the boxset something a tad more than a bit of a bargain, methinks.

Not strictly bluegrass, more Americana but you might like this one if you don't know it?
