I almost went for some Kate Bush, but feeling a bit more soulful... Her 2nd solo album, from 2001.

Guy McCoy Torme 'Bitter & Twisted'

I love Bernie Torme's guitar tone and licks, it's just a shame that after Gillan he didn't work with with a stronger songwriting partner to lift his material up to the next level. I guess he preferred being his own boss. Filed under 'not bad'.

New RAYE album out today, This Music May Contain Hope. Spinning on Tidal hi-res - Vinyl arrived this morning, but will be waiting for daughter to play that tonight when she gets home. She went to bed early and set her alarm to listen to it online at 12:01 - that's dedication!

It's a 'best of' but includes 'FM' and 'Here At The Western World' which aren't on any of their studio albums but are two of their best tunes IMO.

Also has the live version of 'Boddhisatva' with the deranged intro and the tune they did for the film 'Bright Lights, Big City' which is quite good.

I used to have that on vinyl. That bloody zip damaged the cover of the adjacent LP in the rack, despite being in a plastic sleeve.

Now I have it on CD, two in fact, one being a double with the second disc being alternative takes and some live versions. Probably my favourite Stones recording, with 'Let it Bleed' coming a close second.

A worthwhile addition to my CD shelves, especially for having FM on it. So over to Ebay, where I've ordered this "Expanded Edition" off Music Magpie for £3.19 including delivery. Bargain I think :)

The zip was only real on the originals, I have a 1970s re-pressing that does not have it. Although was listening to the original CD release today. I think I slightly prefer 'Let It Bleed' from that era although they're all classics.

Totally understand that. I find them similar to bands like Ramones and Television, so not so "out there" in my world but, hey, we're all different, and as long as we enjoy the music, we all win.

Ah yes, I hadn't thought of that.

Reminds me of the time when I used to attend performances by the group Big Chief in London pub venues. On one occasion they started to play the Nina Simone composition 'I Wish I Knew How it Would Feel to be Free' and a young woman in the audience said "Barry Norman", as it was the theme tune to his film review programmes on the TV.

Sounds great obviously, but... I'd expected something more comprehensive, more like a 'greatest hits' - there are several glaring omissions. My own fault for not paying attention, but having said that I would still get it if only for 'FM'.

Stop giving your records away! I appreciate it though :) No, I want something I can also play in the car, which fortunately has a CD player (unlike my crappy van, which is radio or SD card only). I'll be down your way just as soon as fuel prices get their shit together, I've got some stuff for you which I know you'll like :)

It certainly has an offensive-looking cover. Not sure if the music would be to my taste. :hmm:

Macca
04-04-2026, 13:00
The proposed cover was of the space shuttle exploding but in 1987 that was deemed 'too soon' so it was replaced with the cover shown above.

Just like with Spinal Tap's 'Smell The Glove' a number of major retailers refused to stock the album and the cover was redesigned again although not until many of the original had made it into the wild. Having discovered the band about a year before the album was released I got it as soon as it came out so have the 'offensive' cover on my vinyl copy although these days just play the CD that has the below cover:

https://i.ibb.co/vvR9KCND/appetite-for-destruction-guns-n-roses-1-cd-universal-eu.jpg (https://ibb.co/84tkSnyX)

'They're just experimenting with new packaging, that's all'

'Experimenting? What does that mean? Have they got monkeys opening it or something?'

Barry
04-04-2026, 15:59
 In someways the new cover is, to me, just as bad. I dislike images of death's head, skeletons as much as I do of Christian iconography. I put up with 'momento mori' imagery as I like the work of The Greatful Dead, but since I don't like heavy metal, or death metal groups, I can largely avoid the motifs and symbolism.

I'm a fussy bugger at times!

Following on from the theme of death's head images on LP covers, I picked this out to play:

The Nice - 'Ars Longa Vita Brevis'

https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/XsAAAOSwagJl6Z3~/s-l1600.webp

I used to be big fan of The Nice, and have all of their LPs. Not sure why; probably due to Keith Emerson's fascination with combining classical music with rock music, despite Lee Jackson having a feebly weak singing voice.

I followed on with the Emerson's new group: Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Although a much stronger line, up I never really got past their first LP.

Well nowt stays the same - When Crosby Stills & Nash recorded their debut album they came across a knackered-looking house with a battered old sofa outside, and thought it would be a great setting for their album cover, so their mate took some photos.

A few days later they decided on their name but realised they were seated in the wrong order on the sofa. So back they went, only to find the house had been demolished. So they were stuck with it. These days the plot is just a car park.

The might have considered just reversing the image, but then Stephen Stills would become a left handed guitarist, and their hair partings would be all wrong.

Primal Scream - 'Give Out But Don't Give Up'

https://i.ibb.co/GfDwHxPC/R-9068622-1578474353-2178.jpg (https://imgbb.com/)

''Give Out But Don’t Give Up ... was met with absolute incredulity. For every powder-fuelled trendy who reckoned they could see what Primal Scream were getting at with this loose, louche trawl through stereotypical rock'n'roll and dodgy Confederacy chic, several more were absolutely heartbroken. I can remember the reactions to "Rocks" among my friends, from mild disappointment through outright mockery to an aghast sense of betrayal. Primal Scream, after all, were the band who had shown the way, who’d seen the error of their indie rock ways and taken plenty of us along with them. Nobody in 1994 much listened to Screamadelica any more, but we all of us owned it. "Bitches keep bitchin'/ Clap keeps an-itchin'" – how could they do this to us?''

I went to the warm up for the tour for this album, hardly anyone there just me and some poxy students who were expecting Screamadelica 2 and didn't get it.

Yeah I have those two, and Melody am was always going to be a hard act to follow imo. Not bad tho.

Vanishing Point was a sort-of return to dance music, with Echo Dek being a dub version of that iirc. I lent my copy of Echo Dek to a mate and never got it back. Now you've reminded me about it I'll try to get it back next time I visit. I remember it being weird in a good way.

As for 'Give out but...', I like it enough to play it every now and then, but Screamadelica is much more my thing.

I taped it off someone at university, that would be 1988 but it seemed like a very old album at the time, like an artifact.

That was only 16 years after it came out. Now, if an album came out in 2010 I think of it as 'recent.'

I taped it off someone at university, that would be 1988 but it seemed like a very old album at the time, like an artifact.

That was only 16 years after it came out. Now, if an album came out in 2010 I think of it as 'recent.'

I did buy Argus on its release, I’m very old, also had a couple of the other albums but they are long gone but always loved Argos

LTD - 'ReCOVER'

https://www.ediechoes.com/img/cd/Cover_Recover_thin.jpg
(Echoes 1009, 2009)

Picked this up in Oxfam for 50p. it is a collection of pop, rock and jazz covers by a duo consisting of Luca Fattori (vogal and tape loops) and Tiziano Zanotti (double bass and tape loops). Sad to say I found it disappointing: the jazz numbers degenerated into not very good 'scat' singing, and the double bass dominated all of the tracks.

So back to Oxfam it goes.

For years I had a love/hate relationship with Steely Dan. Despite not knowing if I liked them or not, I continued to buy their LPs. Well a few years ago I decided I loved them after all!

The only artist with whom I had a volte-face experience was with Neil Young. Couldn't stand his thin, weedy voice, but upon listening to 'After The Gold Rush' that all changed. Crazy I know. Since then I have bought his albums going back and forward in time.
