Groovy beats mixing cult '70s psych/stoner/acid rock. Works quite well.

Now that he's left BBC Radio 6 I put his new Saturday programme onto record on Audacity, then chop out the adverts, and then enjoy the set.

This has to be one of the defining Albums of the 80’s. An absolutely joyous, riot of an Album
Two of my favourite 80's albums there!
Was listening to Capital Dance, as I often do at the weekends, but got a bit bored, so now for something completely different...

Yes it is Barry. And not particularly good vfm - the songs are fine (of course), but it is only a single CD, whereas there is available an identical-looking 3-CD box set available for not much money. Which I will buy sometime soon, as there are a couple of other things ahead of it in the queue.

I understand that, most people would agree. But for me it has always been Hunky Dory. It was the soundtrack to the 15 year-old me, a lot of new things happened that year, and so nostalgia will be playing a big part.

A bit of a loaded statement there. Mine is a first pressing so, of course, does not include Sex and Drugs and Rock & Roll. I"m certainly not going to lower my standards to a n other pressing just to incorporate it

I think it should have been included on the album from day one, it belonged there. But I read that it was Dury's decision not to. Its later inclusion was probably the label's idea, to improve sales.

I'd agree with that. Hunky Dory and to a lesser degree Pinups are the only Bowie LPs I like and enjoy to this day. His later stuff I find unappealing and the last few albums, to me, are a dirge. Sorry to be controversial.

With his musical career spanning so many years, and with his musical style so varied, there really is something for everyone. Though I doubt there are many who are fans of his entire catalogue.
+1 for 'Pin Ups'. I did read somewhere that it was a stop gap album to fulfil contractual obligations - I don't know how true that is, but I reckon it's a corker. He was just doing songs he grew up with and having fun with it imo.

I used to have a copy of 'Pin Ups'. Thought little of it at the time and gave it away. There are very few instances of a cover being better than the original ('All Along the Watchtower' being an obvious example), and an LP of covers by a single artist is unlikely to be of interest to me. Though having said that, I do like Brian Ferry's debut solo LP, which is mostly (all?) covers.
Deffo. Gone far too soon.
I did see Ian Dury and the Blockheads perform in London in the late '70s. He had Max Wall (he of the silly walks) there with him for that performance. It was a good night out - I especially remember enjoying Dury's rendition of 'Sweer Gene Vincent'. :)

An absolutely superb session. I would say as good, if not better than the same tracks that were recorded by the original Pink Floyd. The recording quality is superb, with clarity, detail and a feeling of 'you are there'. The sound-staging is amazing: extending beyond the out edges of my speakers, starting about a couple of feet in front and reaching back about 15 foot behind them. Even the height extended above their physical height.

Genesis "and Then There Were Three"
I'm not much of a Genesis fan but always had a soft spot for this. Apparently Banks and Rutherford were the main contributors, which given how the album shifted them away from prog to pop rock you might have assumed was down to Phil Collins. A shedload of melodies.

Crystal Castles - S/T
That Andrew Weatherall mix looks interesting, Mike.
Anyone read Tone Audio Magazine? It's a freebie US publication, and most of it is high end stuff (and adverts) but they do have a themed "playlist" which often leads to an interesting discovery. Last issue (124) was Japanese themed, with an old and new track from Towa Tei - and this is a cracking album, from 1995, his debut solo album, however you may have heard at least one of his tracks before - he was part of Dee-Lite - "Groove is in the Heart" being their biggest hit.

Following on from Alex's post, I thought I'd dust this one off. Not played it in 30+ years. Bought in 1990, it was the last vinyl album I bought before taking a 20-year break from vinyl, in favour of the convenience of CDs. How times change.

Well I've tried three or four times now, but I just can't make myself like that Alison Goldfrapp album. Too samey, and not a real instrument anywhere on it. A shocking waste of her vocal talent.
Calm things down a bit with this, a collection of less 'poppy' versions of her best known songs:

Sort of - I remember them doing 'Sign of the Times' on TOTP, where the lead singer's bottom half of her boobs were peeping under her cut-off t shirt :eyebrows: I know, I'm such a perv.
Edit: I've just been checking out TOTP footage from 1983, and I can't find it. So either it was somewhere else, or I imagined it
I don't remember them at all. I'd deffo remember the boobs thing.

Recorded around the same time as Rock 'n' Roll Animal, but drawing from his Transformer and Berlin albums, where the former is more VU material.

I agree with you regarding 'Rock N Roll Animal' being "more VU", not surprising as 5 of the 7 tracks are taken from VU albums.
Of the two albums 'Transformer' and 'Berlin', I much prefer Transformer.

That is my opinion too. I do also have 'Tusk', which I only played once. Says it all really. I've never heard 'Tango on the Night', and I'm in no hurry.

 I have a copy of 'Tusk', and like you have only played it once. There is only one track on it that I like and that is the title track: Tusk.
'Tango in the Night' is better, but not essential.

It's strange when you suddenly realise that you're into the fifth decade of following an artist. This album from 2019 saw him bang on form.

Which I do :) Just ordered it off Music Magpie, should be here by Wednesday. I've noticed CD prices have been rising lately, suppose it was inevitable. Still, less than a fiver, I can live with that.

Not just me then, I've thought that too; over last six months especially - like 50 percent increase. CDs that were £3.50 are now a fiver.

Exactly that. Still a bargain for what you're getting, but there'll come a point where they're just taking the piss. I know they're still a lot cheaper at charity shops and car boots, but if you're after a specific title it could take years.
This one next, "Journey to Love" Stanley Clarke. His third album, preceding "School Days" by a year. Some good stuff on this, and some top guest musicians.

Which came first: tightness of the chest of the two performers resulting in the cacophony of their playing, or the sound of their playing causing chest angina?
Whatever, their mirror image costumes are imaginative - working out how the drummer could see through the mouth of his costume caused me to be distracted from their playing. As you can see I wasn't impressed, so let's be kind and say Angine de Poitrine is not for me.
